how important is it to you.

It's what life is all about. If someone can bench more than you, that means they have bested you in life.

same.
Well the standard meaning of "bench press" is a procedure within which one lies down with a bar above them with weights of various denominations on each end, and within which one then proceeds to lift that bar off of its support and then move it up and down in an attempt either to build arm muscle or to display the capabilities of one's arm muscles to onlookers, so I suppose that that is indeed what "bench press" means to me.
It just means that you've spent a lot of time at the gym.
ExoticAnimal
no it does not it measures:
-How hard you have pushed yourself
-how much of time and hard work you have spent, and how much pain you endured
-how determined you are
-your genetics
-yournutrition
-your sleep
-your stress levels
-how long you have been working out
etc.
Its everything man.

Agreed, i was ontop of the world when i could finally bench 285lbs (one rep max) Sadly i can't anymore, having been lazy and out of the gym for too long.I don't think I've even done it before and I am pretty athletic guy. (I don't go to the gym but I play alot of b-ball and soccer.) So to me it means absolutely nothing.

Whichever. :P
I don't care. I work out all the time, but I don't have my own bench press so I don't bench press. I do lift weights, but they're typically single-arm exercises that I do. I've got the weights, pull-up bar and punching bag and while I want my own bench I don't feel like spending the money right now. :P
Huh. That's what YOU think. When someone benches more then me, I saddle up and ride on down to their ranch and have a good ol' fashioned shootout with them. Settle it man to man. It's what life is all about. If someone can bench more than you, that means they have bested you in life.

It's just another exercise and isn't a a real testament to a person's physical ability. You can bench press 300+lbs and be fat without ever deadlifting, squatting or doing bicep curls If you want a measure of true physical ability then you need to take a look at all your lifts and where they are at, not just single one out and label it as "the measure of your physical ability" because it's not going to be. The bench press is a great exercise but it's nothing more then just another exercise and a great one at that.

It's a great excersize that utilizes most of your upper body strength (Chest, Bi's,Tri's,Shoulders, perhaps more)
It's a good way to test one's upper body strength, where as with lower body it might be better to gauge their strength with squats.

I'm not denying that it's not a good exercise nor am I denying that it's a great compound exercise but to look at it and say "because I can bench ___ I am extremely fit" is ridiculous. Physical fitness should be looked at from all your lifts, not just one. It's good for measuring your upper body strength but it's not the only exercise that can do that nor should it be viewed to judge how physically fit you are.If somebody can bench 300lb's but only barbell curl 100lb's and another guy can barbell curl 120lb's but only bench 250lb's, who is stronger? You see what I mean.

Yeah, i agree that one's overall strength shouldn't be measured on the bench press alone. However it's a lift that shows how strong a person's upper body is, overall. Someone could easily just go to a gym and do nothing but the bench-press, but at the end of the day they'll probably end up lifting less than someone who's worked their entire upper-body equally.I thought you were gone from GS[QUOTE="lightleggy"][QUOTE="coolbeans90"]
