Stanley Cup is for NHL (hockey)

and the World Series is for the MLB (American Baseball league)

I voted "Super Bowl," but I'd enjoy an average Saturday of college football a lot more.

Winter Olympics. Followed closely by Summer Olympics. If neither of those count, the World Cup easily.

Apparently when the two American national leagues decided to play against one another they wanted a name that sounded epic, so they went with World Series. It isn't meant to be taken in a literal way.

Even if you don't like soccer, you have to admit its the World Cup, mainly because its a global sporting event seen by billions of people. It unites many different cultures and nations. And not to mention it lasts over a month.

A Championship Boxing match is better than all of the above. As long as its the right people fighting especially Mayweather vs Pacquia (I put Mayweather 1st because he is the best P4P)

But my 2nd place vote would be for the World Cup. I just feel if the country or player you're pulling for is eliminated the interest will not be the same personally. But nobody can deny how the game is a great event and a strong passion for people and their country.

I really don't think it is (unless we are talking about the biggest...but we are talking about the best). 1. Any sporting event that prefers to get things wrong (instead of embracing technology) cannot be the best...see soccer and baseball 2. It brings out the worst in people

Well, the topic is not about what sport is best, but about what sporting EVENT is best. As an event, the World Cup is by far the best. You can't dispute that.

I just did.

Can't be the best when there is rampant missed calls, cheating/bending of rules, disgraceful activity, and poor TV presentation
-see all the bad calls that are easily correctable with a quick replay system for goals
-all the flopping that ruins the game (fluidity)
-france's behavior...you would never see an NFL team act that way

Soccer COULD be the best, but they refuse to adapt.
The NFL does everything it can to stay current

I have to agree that the last world cup was a shower of **** - worst I've seen for many a year. Shame really, as there's been some amazing ones over the years. Too much diving, bad refereeing, and the fact the club game is just becoming too big these days and players aren't even bothered about representing their country as much.

I will however instead go for the Champions League in soccer as the greatest sporting event (after the Olympics)

That's what makes it such a beautiful sport, you DO know nothing is perfect right? it's human nature to make mistakes, and technology would ruin the emotion soccer brings real soccer fans (you know those who watch any soccer tournament, not those who talk because they've seen just a few matches in the World Cup). Hmm, you have to be joking right? or are you saying most soccer fans murder others or love rioting?

1. I never said most...where did that come in But soccer fans are the worst (of any major sport) They riot, throw flares, etc all the time...that does not make for an enjoyable event to go to 2. You may love bad calls and flopping. But I hate it Most of the people in this thread (soccer fans) seem to agree with me on this point

Super Bowl. This last World Cup certainly made me want to ignore it for a while. Ugly play, stupid officiating, no instant replay, and the fans are simply ****s.

[QUOTE="rawsavon"] Family murdered the dad this year b/c wanted to watch the world cup...or changed the channel...something like that Riots: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/5282826/ce/us/riot-police-clash-protesters-durban-south-africa-germany-australia-match&cc=5901?ver=usrawsavon

that doesn't have anything to do with football, south africans just wanted to get payed

There has never been a riot at the Superbowl b/c people were not getting paid You have to include what happens around the event as well The SuperBowl is always a great party...well done...professional (that is part of being the best event)

first I'm pretty sure people have always been payed for doing whatever they do in a superbowl

second that would've never happened in first world countries like the US

third the world lasts a month while the super bowl only lasts a day making the chances of something happenening higher

[QUOTE="rawsavon"]

[QUOTE="SplatterDuck"] One very simple but frustrating reason why............the head of the world football association is a moronSplatterDuck

Somethings make you upset but compel you to keep watching (like when my Cowboys play bad)
The flopping and bad calls just turned me off.
i wanted to get into it...but I just became irritated and turned it off

It just sounds like you were looking for a reason to not watch it

Why would I do that and waste my time :?
I am a sports nut (listen to sports all day at work, watch sports, watch sports programming)

I wanted to get into it.

But watching grown men flop like little ******* every game was just annoying...and the refs rewarding them was even worse.

EVERYTHING has to included in calling something the BEST event -those negatives I named affect one's enjoyment going to said event (imagine trying to go while a riot is going on) You could include the NFL playoffs (last over a month) and still no issues

[QUOTE="rawsavon"][QUOTE="6_volts"][QUOTE="rawsavon"] I really don't think it is (unless we are talking about the biggest...but we are talking about the best). 1. Any sporting event that prefers to get things wrong (instead of embracing technology) cannot be the best...see soccer and baseball 2. It brings out the worst in people

 They do that all the time? what world do you live in? And there's not bad calls in every soccer match, and I've seen 2 more refs being on the field on the CL matches, besides you cannot say that just because a few bad calls in the World Cup upset you.

That stuff is on SportsCenter MULTIPLE times a year...you never see that in the NFL Some people call it passion. Others call it pathological obsession Why would you not want your sport to get the call right if they could with minimal stoppage of time? (only talking about goal and flopping situations) -that would stop the flopping...so it would no longer be an issue

Almost everyone in the sport wants that.but unfortunatly, its the one person who matters most doesnt want it
