It is hard for me (a novice) to get into it w/out a rooting interest

I realize that seems picky. But usually a new fan has something to grab hold of (a team in their state, city, etc...a player)

There's an American player in AC Milan (one of the most successful soccer teams in Italy and Europe).

Who? Is he good/does he play a lot? Likable fellow?

I think his name is Oneywu

He plays as a defender and the times I've seen him play he seemed like a solid defender.

I think there are more than 3 or 4 contenders, just think about the last champions most of them were surprises

Which was mostly because of their manager and the runners up just got lucky TBH

2003 champion milan runner up juventus (no one expected this with the galacticos, however I was 10 that time and don't really know what people thought at the time of this team)

2004 champion porto runner up monaco (I don't think anyone would've ever predicted this)

2005 champion liverpool runner up milan (I don't think many would've predicted this, especially since liverpool ended 5th that season)

2006 champion barcelona runner up arsenal (people did expect barcelona to be the champion but I don't think many thought arsenal were getting there)

2007 championmilan runner up liverpool (who would've thought this when milan started the season out of the champions leagueç

2008 champion man u runner up chelsea (well people did expect that)

2009 champion barcelona runner up man u (who would've thought barcelona were getting there after a horrible season)

2010 champion inter runner up bayern (who would've said that with the new galacticos and barcelona)

would an american football player ever do this?

upon Onyewu's request, the one-year extension includes no salary.

i already explained last year, the two years before that sorta proved my point since they are 3 of the 4 teams and i think they'll be the only teams winning it now as well as Madrid with Mourinho as long as he fits in

Because the top sporting event should mean that its possible for any countrys of being represented in it eg. Either the World Cup or Olympics

Not at all – be picky! It's expected really – Fulham had Dempsey playing for them last season mind you (not sure if he still is) who did pretty well, but that's all that springs to mind. The Champions league is just a personal preference really from my side really as a decent spectacle…

Not even close? I was gonna say the same thing about the World Cup, and I'm an American...

I can't get behind something that refuses to use technology (Baseball and Soccer...they would rather get important calls wrong than change)

They don't refuse to use it as they are considering it. I'd rather it stayed the same, though, because it takes away from the subjectiveness of the sport. Goalline technology is the only thing I would consider... As for getting important calls wrong, basketball, football, and baseball all have equally bad, if not worse, flaws that can ruin a game.

I was out of this thread (seemed to have reached a mutual understanding till now) I saw that they are considering it a while back (like a month ago). But call me when they implement it. Also, Football gets most all of its calls right b/c of replay I have the same gripes with baseball (bad calls, refuse to use technology) and basketball (flopping, petty fouls) as I do with soccer

The World Cup. What other sporting event brings the entire world together to watch 64 of the worlds best football games, in one month. You never see another event that makes the whole world party.

And I know about the Olympics. I just like football more.

go to a world cup and you might know why

SplatterDuck

The WC should be the greatest event, but the gulf between some of the top nations and the smaller ones leaves the group stages as fairly routine and mundane. The fact in this modern day players are 'retiring' from the national side to focus on their club team is astounding – 30 years we would never have seen players turn down country for club. I guess it's just a shift of power to the detriment of the WC. The Champions league is a better spectacle IMO…

except only 3 or 4 teams seem to be contenders for it tho since they buy all the best players and almost everyone else is picking up scraps

Best players doesn't mean best team *takes a peek at Real Madrid and Chelsea*. The quality of football in the Champions league I would say is higher than WC by a fair margin.

Well you could make the case of calling holding on every play in football, just as you could call traveling on every possession in basketball. Both games have their flaws--basketball being the worst of the two. Now I realize there were some goals taken away or whatever in the world cup, but if there's a foul on the field, whether it was called correctly or incorrectly, the other team immediately plays it... There's no free movement up the field (automatic first downs in football) or--assuming we're outside the penalty area--no free penalty kicks (free throws in basketball). A bad call USUALLY won't leave a team advantageous in soccer. That said, this year's world cup had some blunders, but the subjectiveness is what's important to the game, and I don't believe they should take it away.

People like to diss teams who try and 'buy' success and fail – Madrid are the epitome of that. Chesea may have won the EPL, but their real goal is the champion's league success which has so far eluded them… Much to everyone's delight :)

People didn't diss them as much when they were successful and played amazing football, only when their galatico philosophy backfired. The money they throw at players these days though is considerably more than they did 10 years ago. I think its great to see them lose and highlight that although a club with questionable finances is willing to pay unbelievably ridiculous money for Kaka and Ronaldo, success isn't guaranteed. That's a positive thing for the sport.
