It's impossible to lack an accent...LJS9502_basic

TheN I have no idea what to call mine. My way of talking is, look at the word, and exactly how it looks I say it like that. I dont stress syllables, roll "r's"

American, but there are too many American accents, just British English but not fancy I guess. The closest thing I have to an accent is saying "like" a lot.

Pacific Northwest with some Northern Californian usage mixed in. People from the west coast of Canada say eh sometimes (I don't say it anymore than any American I've heard) and pretty much sound indistinguishable from west coast Americans. I've never been called out on being a Canadian when I've traveled abroad.

I'm from Glasgow so probably the only celeb I can think of that still has their accent is Billy Connely.

When you guys say that "you don't have an accent" do you just mean that you have an average American accent? (I'm just assuming that the majority of posters on here are from the USA)

CammiTac

I suppose "average American" is right. It's that I don't fall in any group. I would know if I had a New York, Southern, English, or Scottish accent. I have no accent that fits into any specific group.

Don't have any accent, Canadian but don't we don't use "aboot" and "eh" around here.

EDIT: I see people are raging about people saying they have no accent. I have the standard American accent, K.

LJS9502_basic

Probably cause you don't notice it. Every hockey player from Canada...minus French Canadians...I've heard have that accent.:P

I've never actually heard someone say that they've noticed Canadians having an accent that is noticable compared to people from the states (the type of accent you mostly hear on American televison, I suppose)... Apart from French Canadians, Newfoundlanders, Cape Bretoners, people who live in rural areas, etc.

I think I need to travel somewhere and ask people what type of accent I have O_____o

I'd love to have a "Canadian" accent, it's just that I don't hear a difference between me/people around me and the majority of voices in media from the US.

There is no standard accent. And perhaps you've adapted your accent a bit if you've been awhile in one place. It does happen. But Canadians don't actually have the same accent as Americans of the US variety.

I've still never had an American or British person call me as being Canadian. Generally people assume I'm from California. My friends talk the same way I do as well so I doubt it's me adjusting. I'm also very aware of accents and have done a decent amount of research on how certain words are pronounced in certain regions. Canadians in BC sound very different from those in central Canada and Ontario. The difference is from central to BC is about as much as Washington state to Maryland.

The accent. The way they pronounce their words. I won't deny that you might run into people that don't catch subtle differences...or maybe just don't mention them. But everyone has an accent....and usually it stands out to people not of that area. I have family in Denver. They don't speak that differently than I do...but there are differences. Likewise they hear differences in our accents here. Though they tell me I don't sound like the usual accent. So I'm not sure what I have.

I was thinking specific examples of pronunciation but whatever... Also it's entirely possible that you notice the Canadians whose accents stand out (they do exist my chem teacher had an accent almost like Sarah Palin even though he's from the same town as my mother who sounds like I do) and don't even think anything of those who don't stand out. Eh...I can tell when they interview any Canadian hockey player...again..the French Canadian are noticeable but not for the same accent....and like I said when meeting Canadians. Perhaps I'm just better able to pick up subtleties of accents better.

To give you an idea, complete strangers tell me on average several times a week that I should be in radio. As such, it is clear and distinct but I intentionally pronounce things awkwardly for humor. With my job in a coffee shop where I work the drive through window, I'll initiate the conversation merely welcoming people to the store and recommending an item and people will be laughing in response. Apparently people like the way I say words like "frappuccino." That said, my dialect naturally Southern but with enough clarity and distinction for people in my home town to ask me where I am from.
