In my experience, it is without a doubt Hayao Miyazaki. While not the most well-known here in the west, anytime I've ever met anyone who knew about him, they treated him like he was God or something. I'm serious--it is impossible to criticize the man without being ridiculed. I don't know of any other filmmaker that gets this kind of treatment (not even Christopher Nolan or James Cameron) and that's why I think that he's the most overrated filmmaker of all time.

I don't think he's bad at all. I just use him as an example of directors who have rabid fans. I use him to show that not even his supporters are as rabid as the Miyazaki fans. Also, overrated doesn't mean bad, it just means liked too much.

Yeah. I used to be big on Miyazaki, but after watching all kinds of films over the years, I can't really get myself to watch any of his films as much as I used to.

Ron Howard. Most of the movies he's released as a director have been mediocre. He gets a pass for being an executive producer of Arrested Development though.

now i'll admit i haven't watched ALL of his films so none is stretching it a bit. but imo his films are mostly just technical showpieces that are overblown with production values but devoid of real charm and magic. The Aviator is a prime example.... if not for Dicaprio's performance, that film has nothing.

To say Raging Bull or Goodfellas pr Mean Streets is just a technical showpiece is absurd. That can apply to some of his films, like Casino or Gangs of New York, but even those had great performances and told interesting story.

Granted Infernal Affairs was essentially the same story but did it in about 2/3 the time it took The Departed to do, but there's something to be said about the focus of Jack Nicholson's character. As I remember, the crime boss in Infernal Affairs wasn't very involved, but he transformed the character and created what was really a memorable performance.

well, just to clarify, I'm not saying Scorsese is a bad director. he's among the modern masters, sure, but judging from what i've watched he got way more credit than he deserves so far. Ragin Bull was great, but Goodfellas didn't cut it for me - in fact, that was the film which showed me how Scorsese is quite a middle-of-the-road filmmaker. he can tell a story, sure, show you what happened, but underneath all that there's no soul. it's almost as if he cares more about making films than what he makes, if you catch my drift.

I loved Gangs of New York. I think it's his underrated masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis plays perhaps the best villain of the last decade, and 19th century New York was really brought to life. However, the story was uneven, and Cameron Diaz was completely miscast.

Goodfellas was supposed to show the truth and brutality of the mafia, without glorifying it. Unlike the Godfather films, and pretty much every AMerican gangster film since, Goodfellas didn't make the Mafia look glamorous. Quite the opposite. What you saw on screen was Henry Hill's life, as it happened (mostly). I'm not sure what you mean by no soul. Henry Hill was who he was and he did what he did.

just another one of those cases in which Scorsese's ass was saved by his cast. Infernal Affairs was a modern noir full of nuances (which may be inaccessible to those unfamiliar with Canton language and culture) and could've shone brightly by itself. Dicaprio and Nocholson were brilliant in the Departed, of course... but seriously, what else stood out for you? the script was the exact EXACT copy of the original, the photography was nothing extraordinary, and the editing was equally hohum.

fortunately, Shutter Island changed my opinion about him considerably. still, he's overrated.

Shuter Island was his worst film outside of Kundun. I predicted the ending in the first twenty minutes. Have you seen Mean Streets? King of Comedy? Taxi Driver? New York, New York? The Color of Money? Bringing Out the Dead?

I've seen Internal Affairs and no its not the same story. IA is condescend to the point where you don't get a sense of the characters emotions. The Departed expands the story thoroughly so that you care about the characters and understand the stress of being undercover

Its absurd to say that The Departed was a copy as someone here said because its openly acknowledge that its a remake..

One of the most interesting things about The Departed is the dramatic irony of the story because you come to care about the characters

Raging Bull was as far back as I went with Scorsese. The Colour of Money was great though. Sorry you didn't like Shutter Island, but i love it. not because of the plot twist, which really didn't matter, but because of of his masterful use of visual cues to build up the suspence. he also showed a genuine care for Teddy, which drew me further into the film. best film i've watched this year so far.

I don't think The Godfather made the mob look glamorous It showed that most of them were boorish thugs and murderers. And it ends up costing a fellow his reputation as a war hero, his wife and kids - absolute power, corrupts absolutely.

[QUOTE="LoG-Sacrament"][QUOTE="Rhazakna"] To say Raging Bull or Goodfellas pr Mean Streets is just a technical showpiece is absurd. That can apply to some of his films, like Casino or Gangs of New York, but even those had great performances and told interesting story.Rhazakna

once again gangs of new york gets overlooked.

I loved Gangs of New York. I think it's his underrated masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis plays perhaps the best villain of the last decade, and 19th century New York was really brought to life. However, the story was uneven, and Cameron Diaz was completely miscast.

that doesnt sound like just a technical showpiece to me. i wouldnt say that diaz was miscast either. physically, she fit the role perfectly and she did manage to capture the exaggerated nature of the material while not overshadowing dicapprio. what about the story did you feel was uneven?

2. Michael Mann

3. David Lynch

4. James Cameron

5. M. Night Shyamalan

I agree with number 5. I haven't seen an M. Night Shymalamalama(However you spell it) film I've liked. You didn't like Sweeney Todd? :o

Signs, The Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable were good

Raging Bull was as far back as I went with Scorsese. The Colour of Money was great though. Sorry you didn't like Shutter Island, but i love it. not because of the plot twist, which really didn't matter, but because of of his masterful use of visual cues to build up the suspence. he also showed a genuine care for Teddy, which drew me further into the film. best film i've watched this so far.

I don't mean to pick on you ol' sport - but i noticed a few people said this in the other thread on SI. The twist didn't matter? If you don't accept the twist when he writes it on the white board how can you accept what happened for most of that movie?
