I'm not one of those people who say that "Rock is dead", because it really isn't. We have many great rock bands today, but the media doesn't promote them as much as they did in the past. So my question is, Why can't the media promote the bands with talent that work hard to make good music, instead of promoting people who have no talent and use autotune to make dance music that all sounds the same to me.

They market what sells... why would they ever promote anything else? Also it's pointless marketing niche bands as they won't be picked up by the mainstream and the niche fans will seek them out by themselves.

You do realize that those artists have to make tons of sacrifices to even stay on the label and stay huge? Some bands people listen to here are most likely under an indie label. In most cases, they are more relaxed. But... if you go straight to a big label, you will have to switch it up to their liking. If big labels let people do whatever they wanted, mainstream would sound totally different. Some bands switch to a big label later on because they were getting offers left and right. You can get big with starting on the indie line but it is just harder. Plus there is probably way more money in being in a big label as to an indie label. Not sure if it is 100% true, but it would make sense if it was.

this.and now if the question has changed to why today's mainstream music happens to be dance music mostly,i guess it's rooted in some social backgrounds, mainly economic problems and dance music is somehow a reaction to such problems.,just like the 80's.

People in general are too busy/uninterested in music so they go for whatever is playing on the radio and whatever is catchy.

For the same reason many good games aren't mainstream; it doesn't appeal to mass audiences.

I don't think its necessarily bad music, its just that were bombarded with so many artist that sound alike. After awhile they just start to sound a little generic.

Because "good" music doesn't have a marketable image. Music these days is all about what image your trying to sell to the public and a lot of it has very little to do with actual skill or musicianship. That's not to say there aren't popular bands that ARE talented, but their certainly not as popular as a Lady Gaga or Katy Perry.

Most people are dumb, therefore most people don't understand "good" music. (most "good" music is good because it's usually more complex)

Think..A joke isn't funny if you don't understand it. Good music isn't good if you don't understand it.

Artists like money, consumers have money, so they make music that will appeal to the widest group of people. Pop music seems to be that core genre that gets sales so everyone starts making pop music, even if they aren't pop artist's they incorporate pop into their genre. Look at Mainstream rap, more like Hip-Pop. Even rock groups try and have that up beat catchy sound.

What people tend to like as "good" music is music that is usually a genre at it's extreme. People that like hip hop like hip hop that is more technical with a more intricate beat and I guess you could say "harder to dance in a club to" same with Metal, etc.

Motzart's music is on average more complex then most mainstream music.

because mainstream music is about making money, not creating a worthwhile experience. If a band is marketable, then they become mainstream.

It depends on where you live honestly. Where i live, rock/metal is the dominant main stream music, many other places ive visited didnt even have a rock station.

Something defined as "good" is defined so by the majority. So, consequently, good music is mainstream. :P

Problem is, people anymore have lowered their standards so much that they like stupid overproduced garbage rather than the guy that is making the good music that isn't so popular.

I don't like "bands" - I don't consider rock to be "good" music. What happens then?

Also "mainstream" is music that's the most appealing to a braod range of audiences. Whether you want to admit it or not "pop" - "popular" i.e. "mainstream" - appeals to the broadest of audiences. Other types of music are not mainstream because once people find particular tastes they start to funnel into other genres, but for the most part various pop songs will always appeal to someone, no matter what they mainly listen to.

I disagree with that. Some people do move past or never enjoy mainstream "pop".

There is some good music that's mainstream, but it's basically overshadowed by crappy music that's mass produced to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Badass bands start out in garages and people start to call them "mainstream" because they accumulate a very large fan base. It really makes me angry when they start calling these types of bands "mainstream."

you realise main stream or not has no correlation with how good a song is, and it's strictly opinionated and subjective whether a song is good or not anyway..

Well, regardless of how you feel about Gaga...she is quite talented and can sing great..she is good...Beiber on the other hand doesnt have much going for him. Ordinary dance, very normal voice...BUT still...EVERYONE has their own opinion on what GREAT is so no matter what anyone else thinks, it changes from person to person..

Kid Cudi is mainstream, and I think he is the best modern rapper.

2Pac was the most popular rap artist in the 90s, and I think he is the best all time.

You aren't inherently bad if you're popular...

I just don't see why mainstream bands need to be THAT popular. People can like whatever they want, but do bands really need to be known by a huge

portion ofthe population ? You seriously should have to be massively innovative and talented to be able to do that. You shouldn't be able to come up with

somecheap catchy thing and all the sudden become a rock star.
