Why can't good music be mainstream?

Its still there. "Mr Brightside" was the most requested song of the decade, gotta mean something. The Strokesstarted the biggest contract bidding war ever. Whenever there isa band in the charts, music is at its greatest. The Vaccines are blowing up right now, which is a good thing.

Because the it wouldn't be good. The perception that mainstream music is bad is generally just psychological, as obscure bands that certain demographics like will sometimes pick up a mainstream audience, at which point the old fans will stop liking it merely because the band has gone "mainstream" and their music hasn't actually changed. Granted, there is a lot of mainstream music which is actually utter crap, but those tend to be more numerous in the hip hop genre, which I presume you don't like anyway.

There is plenty of good music that is mainstream.

I think mainstream music is good alot of the times. Just look at Taylor Swift for example? I love her music.

Good music rarely makes it to the mainstream because it's too risky for a major label to promote anything but the paint-by-numbers singers and musicians.

"Music" like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry appeals to a broad base of people. They don't care if it's generic beats, electronically-processed melody and lyrics written by commitee to invoke the same emotions as the other 15 trillion pop songs on the radio... they just want something they can jump around a dance floor to.

Thought provoking and relevant? "That's so 1960's." Experimental? "Isn't that what Pink Floyd was for?" Hard-edged or gritty? "Yeah... that's Nickelback!"

If something fresh and original does make it to pop radio, you can almost bet it's an accident, and it won't happen again for a while.

It doesnt actually make sense, kids obviously download most of their music and yet it's music targeted at that demographic that sells, it doesn't actually make sense.

I listen to plenty of mainstream metal :P

EVERY great artist takes things from other great artists. AND if you think Amy Winhouse is great , that is your first problem. Calling someone like Gaga who can actually carry a tune and play instruments no talent is like saying KING MICHAEL JACKSON had no talent and over shadowed real talent..lol..

Amy Winehouse had ONE song I ever heard..AND I bet most of her die hard fans hated that sone because it so mainstream..lol..BUT srs, everyone has the right to worship and like what ever music,ect they want..there are no rules to it..Some people thought the Beetles were genius..I on the other hand didnt care much for them..
