Because species that fight to survive are more likely to pass on their genes that encouraged such behavior.

Y'know, just disinterested in procreating. Thought it was a better analagy than some animals extinction caused by catastrophe/environment or climate change. Pandas just got bored of spending all day chewing bamboo which has little more nutritional value than air, so they thought f*** it let's just go extinct. At least that's my scientific analysis anyway.
