Your race, gender is not a choice, so why would your sexuality be one? What do you think?

There is no way to know, scientists haven't found the gay gene yet... so there is no proof either way. I don't THINK it's a choice, why would someone put themselves through that kind of discrimination? I think it's a mixture of how you were reared and genetics, but I have no proof whatsoever.

I think in most cases it's not a choice, and in some others it is. Being a heterosexual man and knowing what gays do between themselves...there is no WAY I could "choose" to do those activities lol. Plus, we see homosexuality in the animal kingdom as well...to me everything points to it being primarily something that occurs naturally.

whoor what you are attracted to is not a choice.

Only ones actions are a choice and that applies to any and all sexualities.....

I never chose to be straight so I can only assume gay people never chose to be gay As for why others think it's a choice I guess they're just ignorant and in some cases trying to justify their prejudice.

Well, you could collect the sperm and eggs of homosexuals and create children from these samples, and deduce from the sexuality of the children whether it is a genetic condition, surely?

Genetics are way too random for an experiment like this to yield anything useful.

Have they found the straight gene????????

Actually they have found the gay/straight brain chemical yes. About 15 years ago in fact. I recall having a conversation about the TIME article on the subject.

SEANMCAD
You are probably talking about the Hamer issue, and it's not a chemical, its a brain formation with no indication of causality and less than 100% correlation.

I wouldn't say there's "no proof either way". Identical twins are much more likely than fraternal twins to both be gay if one is gay indicating a genetic predisposition (but also indicating that it is not purely genetic), and the brains of homosexual people resemble the brains of heterosexual people of the opposite sex in certain ways, indicating that there are real physical differences between homosexual and heterosexual people (which would rule out the idea that it's a choice).

I think most people take the concept of "choice" farther than the reality of it. What you think you're doing and what you're actually doing are often two different things. You may have a set of choices in front of you, but your decision is not as simple as "I choose because I choose." There are many factors that influence why you choose the way you do, from genetics, physical environment, social circumstances, culture, and numerous other factors. I think most of the perceived choices we may or may not make are in fact absolutes and not really a choice at all.

Yeah, I mean... me too, but I still think that it's the way you were brought up mostly... For me, I can see traits in the women that I like that remind me of the women I grew up around, attitudes and things of that nature. And before someone says something about Freud, I didn't grow up around my mother.

Do you think it's because of the way you were brought up? I mean, one occasion of your dad showing you a playboy when you were 13 wouldn't make a difference anyway, the kind of things I'm talking about would have happened when you were 2 - 8... you know?

One thing that annoys me though is how SOME (not a generalization) homosexuals hate anyone who thinks that it's a choice based on life situations in that persons life. Similar to SOME sexist women who hate all men because they are men.

smchacko

Removing sexual desire doesn't win the argument for one side or the other.

Edit: Let's be logical about this.

If I want an orange, really badly. I'm going to go to the store and buy an orange.
But say, on the way to the buy the orange, I ate fifteen apples. I'm not hungry anymore, I'm not going to go buy an orange, even though that's what I wanted... my hunger(sexual desire) is gone, so I don't want the orange(same sex/opposite sex) anymore. It doesn't prove that I didn't want that orange the whole time because I was born to, or because I was reared to believe oranges were better than apples. It just means that my desire for sustanance is gone.

I think it's just something you are. You could start as a straight person, then suddenly figure you wanna experiment, and end up not wanting to 'go back' to being straight. Maybe you're bi, maybe you're gay. I honestly don't care about your sexuality, you can still be an awesome person even if I can never have sex with you ;3

I never said people were "born to like a certain gender"; as I said, identical twins are more likely to both be gay if one is gay but that likelihood is about 50-60%, meaning that in 40-50% of cases where one identical twin is gay the other one is not gay This effectively rules out the idea that one's sexual orientation is entirely determined at birth. However, it is also the case that, as I said, there are physical differences between homosexual and heterosexual people, and those are physical characteristics that would develop at a very young age - so whatever it is that determines someone's sexuality, it definitely is not just some random, reversible choice the person decided to make as a teenager, as anti-gay activists like to suggest.

I guess because humans still dont know much about the human brain.

I suppose some day in the future we will understand the causes of biological deviations like homosexuality and perhaps develop a treatment

I remember hearing a theory somewhere that the reason there are homosexuals is because the population has gotten too big and this is nature's way to help control it. I don't know if it's true. But, being homosexual is definitely not a choice.

I honestly don't know how or why some people think it's a choice. You clearly can't choose your sexual orientation.

You don't decide one day whether you'll be straight or gay.

It just happens.

Actually I read that wrong. I was thinking of something else. my bad.
