[QUOTE="atoria56"]I know what you went through was probably traumatic. But seeing friends and lil kids getting killed by gunfire is no happy site seeing gangs and drug dealers is something that is a big thing to fight from becoming man.C-Himura

No, I didn't go through anything traumatic. I was sheltered by my family most of my life, but I have seen my share of poberty, misery and death. All first hand.

What I was trying to say is that you shouldn't say things like the ones you said in your post about us foreigners just seeing the nice parts of the US and not having seen anything like your ghettos. Saying comments like that only make you seem blind to the rest of what the world is going through.

My fault man I made that statement out of ignorance I was under the assumption that all foreigners only see the side of America that the media wants them to see. If you guys are aware of the bad situations here then I totally apologize.

[QUOTE="Hulkness"]Or because when im at a basketball game and the other team wins I dont cheer for them. If it is a big upset for a fan then there not going to cheer. It has nothing to do with the outside world. If the giants lost this year I wouldent have cheered for the pats and thats because the team I wanted to win lost.ragnarok874

The Olympics are a different beast though, it's not just about the winning (cliche alert) but the taking part is the most important - you ask any athlete from a country that isn't known for winning anything and they wouldn't care if they came in last place, it's the experience. it's normally the same with the crowds as well. As I stated, in my experience, it was only the Atalanta games that I saw this happen in (and I'm 32 so have seen a few games), so I think it says more about the nation hosting it than it does about the games themselves.

I see what your saying but I still think if you want America to win and then another country wins I wouldent clap either. I dont know how its supposed to work since I dont watch the olympics but if I where there I would cheer for America because thats who I want to win not because I dont like the other countrys. I respect most countrys but im competetive like most of America and want my team to win in anything even if its a video game.

You have nothing to apologize for.

And of course we are aware. No country, regardless of how rich it is, escapes misery. Whether the media shows the nice places, we have learned this through history and experience. One only need to look at magnificent cities of old or just take a drive across your own country to really open your eyes. The media also shows more that what people may think. News, as much time as they may spend on Paris Hilton, also show a lot of the sadness that this world is going through, regardless of country. Rather than blaming the media, we should blame ourselves, for most of us just decide to turn or heads and face the other way.

Clapping and cheering for the other team is a show of respect and true sportmanship, to both, your team and the other team, regardless of the outcome of a competition. You see how those guys that just gave their all out there hug and congratulate the other after a competition? Is the same basic principle.

I think its because Americans are seen as too patriotic. No-one likes fanboys.

Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with critisizing your government. Actually I think thats pretty much the whole point of democracy; if the government does something you don't like or you want the government to change something then you're supposed to whine really loud about it.

I don't think the jealously argument is a good one either, it might apply to 3rd world countries but America gets a fair share of contempt from fellow first world countries.

That's the point I'm trying to prove, other nations would be disappointed that their athlete didn't win, but then they'd applaud the winner, a well as their own athlete, no matter where they came. Americans come accross as insular and not respecting other people in these situations, which while it may not be the case all the time, it doesn't portray America as a whole in a good light.

I lived in New Jersey, moved to North Carolina, and now am in Arkansas. The farther south I moved the more ignorant the average person around me became.

I am from Texas, Dallas to be exact but I think you ran into one person who was ignorant and from there you expected everyone in the south to become more and more ignorant you send out that energy so that's what is happening I like the southern people besides from the racist but you must be blind (not trying to be insulting) to think that the east coast is far from ignorant matter of fact your own post are proving what I said before, most people on the east coast are harsh and condescending to southern people.

I have lived in Arkansas more than any other state in my life. And I will be honest, it's not as horrible as I make it sound... in fact the people here are probably nicer than most from other states I have lived in. I don't really want to get into this part of my life, but for sake of arguement, I live in a high class of life. Yet even the people down here who live in my neighborhood barely leave the state and assume that anything outside is terrible in comparison, they are the type of people that are like hell ya blow up dem IRAQI sunsabishes. Doesn't mean I haven't met other people around here who aren't like that, but in general it is worse here than other places.

Those type of people are throughout America you have the east coast talking about Confederates vs Yankees now that is bad.

I know there are people like this all over the place, but around here it is definately worse in my experience. I don't want to make assumptions, but from my own experience the stereotypes are generally true. I know plenty of people around here that aren't the way I describe some of these people, but I also have met more of those kind of people here, than in any other place I have lived.

Well the east coast stereotypes are true also like alot of people from the east coast are stubborn and rude. Your still being rude and don't even realize it lol.

Also, I find it funny that the American form of Ignorance has seeped through all of the different social and intellectual classes, very much like in Japan. In the UK you usually see this amongst lower class people.

Even the American users on this board , who're relatively sensible in most cases and represent the wide set of classes, show traces of this. It's strange....

Hmm, I don't think ignorance is the right word for it though...hmm yes, strange indeed.

It's not that simple. I dislike your government's fundamental structure when it comes to the elections, for example. But I like other aspects. And I'm from the UK.

I am sorry too, and don't get me wrong, I never judge southern people based off their accent. In fact, after living here for a while, I really like the accent (although I don't have one myself). And I really don't take offense to anything, so don't worry about that. And I tend to be rude (no not because I was born on the east coast :P), but I have my reasons for that (maybe if they aren't necessarily good reasons), but getting into my psychology would be way off topic and pointless anyway, haha.

Not in so many words but it does appear to be indicative of American culture as a whole, as this may be one of the few times that people outside of America get to see how the American public react to different situations involving other cultures. To me, if I didn't know any Americans (I do know a few and have been good friends with them, having similar conversations about this topic), I would judge on what I'd seen, rather than taking an objective view. I suppose the sports thing could just be used as an analogy.

OR they have been there and dont like it, America may have more freedoms then alot of countries BUT they have more social anxiety and materialiusm then any other country in the world. Alot of people from poorer counties state that they would rather stay because they have more moral values. There are lots of things i like about america but it is downright egocentric to think that its a prefect country.

[QUOTE="teh_destroyer"]a lot of other countries don't have the same type of freedom as we do,so therefore they hate us.Hulkness

Joking?

No one hates a country because they are free. People in Europe dont wake up and say "I thinl il hate America today becuase there so darn free". Terrorists dont decide to attack us to destroy our freedoms. That doesnt make sense.

No I think he means that there jealous. Its not fair that I can sit here and say America sucks if I want and not get into trouble where they get killed for saying there country sucks. They may think we are a spoied country and hate us out of spite. Its a very easy thing to hate people that have it better than you. Like people who hate rich people because they think there spoiled.

al-Qaeda didn't destroy the World Trade Centre for "jealousy". They did it because the West has divided, exploited and ruled the East for a very long tim. The transnational corporations and the media of the US are the epitome of capitalism, and that is what they were making a statement against. Why do you think they blew up the World TRADE towers?

It's not due to jealously, it's revenge and martydom.

I am a proud America too. Yeah, we have a long way to go from all the problems we got, but apart from that, America is a free, capitalist country (that is why many people hate America.)

I do not understand it either. There is clearly nothing to hate about our wonderful country and how we are handling foreign and domestic policies, or lack thereof.
