I still like metal though
This topic is locked from further discussion.
That's simply pig-headed ignorance. Most metal songs are low quality. Just shouting and random stupid lyrics.

I was born in the eighties and even I know that the best music were the melodic songs and bands from the sixties (for instance, Beatles). Then metal, rap and reggaton came in the following decades and quality music died.
A lot of people who say "metal has emotion" and other genre's don't. I've been in enough bands, worked in enough studios, been friends with enough bands and artists to know that is the BIGGEST pile of crap ever told.
If metal speaks to you, then thats awesome. But why can't someone get that same feeling listening to punk? or alternative? or hip hop?
And who the hell are you to judge someone's musical taste? Your somehow more musically intelligent cause you listen to a band with a vocalist who sounds like he's gargling razor blades? And yeah I agree, a lot of metal bands are comprised of some good musicians (song writing on the other hand...eh)
The funny thing is, I LOVE metal. I grew up listening to Pantera, Slayer, Testament, Cannibal Corpse, Opeth, Meshuggah, In Flames (who are awful now), Soilwork (same as In Flames), Metallica, Candiria. But I also love to listen to some hip hop, or punk, or some world music, or 80's new wave, or some pop, etc, etc etc.
If I like a My Chemical Romance song, does that make me less musically intelligent?
And my biggest question, if I do like a My Chemical Romance song? Who cares? lol
As someone said before, as you get older, you care less. Listen to what you like.

Amen!
I don't like sabbath, but I hate those mainstream bands. It doesn't really piss me off if someone like these bands but if people say that its not music and some crappy fall out boy is then...
And I'm more into screaming anyways that's why i don't like older metal bands.

Well thats your opinion...
Metal is not really "attractive"kurama2002
in other words, it's not what everybody is doing, so it's wrong.
Coming from someone who doesn't like it- it generally has to do with the fans. They dress weirdly, they dye their hair and have weird piercings. They don't look like us normal folk who wear trendy clothes and listen to whatsever at the top of the charts. We are puzzled by your type and some are disgusted by it.Memberino
I'm not like that at all. I dress normal and metal isn't the only kind of music I listen to. Metal is my favorite kind though.
It isn't? Loads and loads of people listen to it. Especially people who have a slightly bigger interest in music then "I listenz to radio!". I find it's way easier to find a Metal or "classic rock" fan then a fan of Hip-Hop, Reggae, Punk or Alt. Rock. I think a lot of frustrated people can relate to the music because it's pretty much made to appeal to that crowd.
I liked the music back when I was younger but now I can barely stand it except for a few artists..

Listening to what is in the charts and wearing trendy clothes is shallow in my opinion, people who do that are just trying too hard to fit in. I listen to whatever music i think sounds good and wear whatever clothes i like, why should you try as hard as possible to make yourself into a mainstream culture clone.
And btw, have you ever thought that maybe the people who you think dress wierd maybe think that you dress wierd?
As some on here have also said, metal fans, I'm gonna break this to you gently
Metal is mainstream.
For God sake's theres a store dedicated to the newer wave of metal thats in EVERY MALL I've ever been to. Theres a cartoon show on Comedy Central about a metal band. Uranium was a hit show for awhile on Fuse, which was dedicated to metal. MTV brought back the Headbanger's Ball. Opeth, of all bands, cracked the Billboard charts with Damnation. Ozzfest is one of the most popular touring music festivals ever.
For crying out loud, Cannibal Corpse was in Ace Ventura.

Opeth of all bands.. :o I guess Prog-rockish influences mixed with Death Metal makes people go nuts these days.. I really never expected a band with so tedious songs would become so big. :PAs some on here have also said, metal fans, I'm gonna break this to you gently

comedy central...ya mean cartoon network maybe?...ehh compared to other genres of music, metal is not AS mainstream . i never hear cannibal corpse on the radio. and also , i don't consider numetal to really be metal, now that stuff is mainstream, like the kinds that's got rap mixed in and everything, again imoAs some on here have also said, metal fans, I'm gonna break this to you gently

Heres the thing though, metal doesn't get played much if at ALL on radio stations, and normal MTV programming does not play any metal.
Yeah it isn't some incredibly small thing or anything and it is quite big, but it isn't truely mainstream.
There are stores dedicated to glasses and sewing and even calenders. Apparently calenders are mainstream because I see calender stores in the malls I go to....
As for the Ace Venture thing, Jim Carrey is a fan of Cannibal Corpse so thats why they were in the movie. He finds the band funny....
Oh and Damnation is Opeths LIGHT album, lol. Opeth is one of the most popular bands in metal today because they make such incredible music.
Oh and BTW Ozzfest is FILLED with bands that alot of elitist metalheads would write off as "wannabe metal". Don't get me wrong I went last year and loved it and plan to go again this year, but you know something is up when crap like Lamb of God is on the main stage.
[QUOTE="Nifty_Shark"]IF they care about music enough they will eventually grow out of Fall Out Boy and other such bands. They're taste just isn't there yet.helium_flashWow that wasn't an elitist comment . FYI, more people like FOB and MCR than probably all your metal groups.
Yep. Even more people like Britney Spears. Honestly When I was just starting to care about music I liked many bands that I don't like at all anymore. It's not that I feel I'm better than fans of Fall Out Boy because if I was 12 I would probably like them too but after caring about music for a long time there is no way I could actually enjoy listening to it.

Not liking something because of its fans? How much more ignorant can that be?
I dress relatively 'normal' if you want to use that word; I wear blue jeans, shirts of various colors without any logos and a pair of black tennis shoes. Most people around my school don't even notice that I have my earphones pumping metal constantly into my ear, and they don't even bother to ask.
I am open to listening to other forms of music, but I don't find any form of 'hiphop' appealing to me anymore as I have grown up, but there are a few artists that I can tolerate listening to of that genre.
I can understand people's not liking it because they have no real appeal to it, but because of its fans?

Yea... nu-metal, rapcore and stuff like that is really mainstream. But heavy metal is also quite mainstream, like Metallica, you hear it a lot in MTV even if it's not Headbangers Ball.

You hear a lot of nu-metal in MTV like Linkin Park or whatever. I don't know if you consider nu-metal as metal but you also hear Metallica there.

I liked metal back when I was 12, now I don't. :PPeople just follow whatever music is familiar to them. And music most often played over the radio or MTV will be that music. And metal isn't catchy. A lot of people listen for hooks and catchiness. Metal just doesn't have enough of that for them. I'm the opposite. I hate most catchy music. I like music that requires many listens before you get used to it. I'm sure if a bunch of rap and pop music listeners gave metal a try, they'd prefer it to the crap they listen to.

I disagree slightly. State of Euphoria era Anthrax has some very catchy hooks as well as songs. Lizzy Borden and Alice Cooper as well.

Anthrax is very "80s", and 80s metal can be very catchy. And I'm not even sure if I'd refer to Alice Cooper as metal. Most metal isn't catchy unless it goes out of its way to be catchy, sort of like folk metal.
its because they dont know what theyre talking about.
They hear Corey Taylor screaming into the mic, but they dont know how beautiful his voice really is.
They get alienated by Metallica (cuz all they hear about them is that theyre sellouts) but they dont realize they are some of the most talented writiers of music and lyrics.
I truly believe that a lot of bands on the metal genre have an insane amount of talent and even insight. I mean has anyone ever heard the S&M album by metallica? Their songs go epically-well with the orchestra its insane!
[QUOTE="AndrewSuh"]One day you will gain some maturity and not let other people's music taste affect you so much.airg6It bothers me because they dont appreciate real music and are missing out.
calling music you like as "real music" in absolute terms is an extremely ignorant and immature thing to do. if you like metal, then fine, go listen to it as much as you want since it suits you. but you absolutely have no right to degradie other peoples' taste in music, not even if it doesn't make sense to YOU. everyone has the right to listen to whatever the hell they want to listen to, and by saying your music is "real music" completely contradicts that concept. so grow up, and stop talking in absolutes.
