heh damn , that's just wrongWhat annoys me about one of my friends is that he says that Metallica's St. Anger album is their best one...
I know everyone has their own opinion on metal...but come on now.

I'm still wondering how people think metal isn't mainstream. Its been in the mainstream for years now.
People don't like the genre, cause yeah, they want a good tune they can drive to, sing a long with, etc, etc. Why is that wrong? As I said, WHO ARE YOU to judge someone's musical taste? Maybe they just can't understand where your coming from, in the same way you don't understand where they're coming from.
For everyone saying "oh its complex, theres talent, blah blah blah" theres also a lot of just terrible bands out there, and a lot of good, talented pop acts. John Mayer is a great guitar player, loads of talent, not a great lyricist but writes good pop and blues songs. He doesn't play triplets while screaming, but does that make him a bad musician?
The newer bands I really like are Mastodon, High On Fire, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Between the Buried and Me.
A lot of other stuff I either don't like, or just isn't new. Meshuggah, Opeth, In Flames, Soilwork and a lot of other scandinavian metal I've been listening to since I bet a lot of other people on this board were in elementary school.
As said, I LOVE metal, but I won't bash people for liking Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance songs (I like some of their songs actually) and other bands.
Hell, my favorite singer is Brandon Boyd from Incubus. I'm also a huge fan of Social Distortion, MXPX, Oasis, etc, etc. As I got older, I stopped caring, and just listened to what I like.
And for the metal fan that got pissed off at another poster for bashing metal, now you know how he feels when you bash hip hop.
Instead of saying "its talentless garbage" how bout you listen to it, and realize that a lot of rappers are in someways poets (I'm talking about guys like Mos Def and Common, NOT Soulja Boy).

Only metal bands you listed = Mastodon, BTBAM, Meshuggah and Opeth

I know someone who thought Black Rain was Ozzy's first record.
[QUOTE="silence790"][QUOTE="bradleybhoy"]White guys? Long Hair? That pisses me off. Not all metal musicians are white, look at Killswitch Engage or Sevendust or Suffocation. Angry? Screaming their depressing verses? How about I say something like this? "Rap is all about some high black person attempting to sing about drugs?" I don't mean that because it's not exactly the truth. Everyone does what they want on instruments, it's funny you mention that.Because it's all the same.
A bunch of white guys with long hair and no real reason to be angry screaming their depressing verses about war, suicide and unrequited love, whilst everyone just does what they want on their instruments, meanwhile there's a solo here and there but they all sound the same too.

I have a pretty good feeling that was sarcasm.
Thank you!!!
All you suckas need to actually INVEST in some sarcasm detectors because I deliberately put "/ignorant opinion" at the end of my post for you guys with the faulty ones!
All you indignant metal heads had to have captain obvious save the day.

Whats the point of posting then if you knew it was an ignorant tasteless oppinion.Hmm i used to listen to really mainstream modern stuff , i always thought fallout boy was kinda crap though- just didnt relate to the songs/couldnt enjoy them. Been listening to older music recently. stuff like led zeppelin, slayer, hell even bob dylan, is far better than stuff today. Rise against is a good modern band, i dont think their metal though..more punk rock.
MCR is kinda crap
so is atreyu
rubbish bands

[QUOTE="quiglythegreat"]It's all intuitive. Electronic music artists needn't have a clue about major or minor progression because they usually don't use it anyway; they go about creating that feeling through other ways, and we can all understand feelings because they require zero intellectual capacity, and so I think music isn't intellectual at all. You can put a name to it, but that doesn't make it prettier if you're educated about it.

Look, I don't think there's much point to debating this. I can assure you that I appreciate music more now than I did when I knew nothing about it, and anybody who has received a musical education will tell you the same thing. And I do revel in the compositional ingenuity of works I enjoy... because simplistic music bores the hell out of me. And if it bores the hell out of me, I'm not going to be sensing any emotion other than boredom from it.
Think of it like reading. If you have a general sense about where to expect certain things to happen and what to expect from language, you will understand what you read better, and you will derive more fulfillment from it. If you have no understanding of form or styIe it will be much more difficult to appreciate. That's why people who study Shakespeare can come to love it, whereas to the layman, it is nearly unintelligle unless presented by skilled actors. They can't even understand the dialogue, because although the words are English, they are often used in an unfamiliar way. And that's to say nothing about more complex ideas like thematic development, metaphors, and the like.
You just get all that stuff though. It's all there anyway. The beauty of Shakespeare is that anyone can understand what he was saying because we all feel that way and he presented those ideas in eloquent, but fairly simple ways (they are sometimes outdated now, but the Globe could certainly get his meaning). And that's what good music does. It draws on what everyone feels anyway and presents it well so that we feel it even more. Now, there are all sorts of techniques in music to acheive this effect, but like I said, putting a name to it means nothing. The effect is the same. You can intellectualize it all you want, but that only makes the experience bigger; the music is either good or bad. Clouds don't get any prettier when you figure out it's a cumulus or a stratus. If music is boring, it's boring. If music is complex, well, hell, if it's good, you can sit anyone down to it and they'll usually like it. Music is universal.[QUOTE="quiglythegreat"][QUOTE="pianist"][QUOTE="quiglythegreat"]I don't think complex music needs to be broken down for it to work. That's the beauty of music. Yes, yes, you can intellectually analyze music and what each note may mean, but really, you just know. It's very intuitive and I very much feel that a good piece of music can be appreciated by anyone, equally, because music's primary appeal is in the way it makes the listener feel rather than giving some intellectual something to chew on.

Yes, I agree. And not surprisingly, what we consider to be the greatest musical achievements of mankind are those which are extremely clear in the way they communicate emotion. The complexity lies beneath the surface, there for those who wish to revel in it to discover, but un-necessary to the appreciation of the music. Having said that, a person will draw much more from a listening experience with understanding of what's going on than without. That's why we often dislike new music that to which we're initially exposed, but like it more and more if we delve into it. My favourite composer is one who I didn't like much at all in my youth. So I do think that certain genres demand more with respect to musical understanding and listening maturity than others.

Or are you basing it off some muscle bound, fake tanned guy whose blasting house music in his car while driving 100 miles an hour down a school zone?
Mostly I'm obsessed with Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. Please Log In to post.
