Sorry, but it's totally the contrary, metal is more and more mainstream to a frightening point. I was going to the library and a kid of 13 years old told me that my Behemoth shirt was awesome...

And you know what, when I have gone to see them, the age average was about 14 years old... I'm 24 damn it!

These kids don't care about music they only care about the strong image which I CAN'T TAKE!

I love metal and I play METAL BECAUSE IT'S A PASSION!

Redgarl

Oh boo hoo. If you're 24, act 24. Stop whining about what kids are doing now-a-days because it's only going to get worse as time goes on. I'm 23 and I know this already.

OK. But elite doesn't usually refer to just fewer. The word itself is typically associated with 'best' or at least 'exceptional.' Most people aren't axe murderers. That doesn't mean axe murderers are elite... unless you're talking about axe-murdering. And even then, some of them are probably really lousy axe murderers, so they wouldn't be elite at all. They'd be mediocre.

It's because they don't understand it. All they want is a simple and catchy chorus, but Metal requires actual talent.

Ah, that would explain why the world hasn't imploded due to Pianist getting something wrong o_0rb2610

I'm often wrong. But yes, in this case the quote is correct as near as I can tell. Don't worry, though. It's easy to think it's wrong, because it's certainly not the modern spelling, and you aren't the first person that has pointed it out. It's also worth noting that even today, politicks refers to the act of discussing or engaging in politics, though I've never heard anyone use it that way. You don't say that Clinton or McCain are politicking. We use different words now.

Metal to a lot of people myself included, is just seen as Noise, and repetitive noise at that...especially the screaming, not enough melody

I love metallica, nin, skinny puppy, disturbed...

hopefully that paints a picture of my range

pianist

Then that's a very close minded view

Do you like every genre in existence? Because if you pass off even one with a stereotypical label (let's say polka for instance), then you're being just as 'close-minded.' He's right. Lots of people hear metal as being repetitive noise. And that's exactly what it is... it is a noisy genre and it is repetitive. Either you'll like that or you won't.

Thats funny considering how repetitive rap is. Metal rules and rap in my oppinion is not that great.

I have done. I have a few friends that listen to metal all the time, and they've more than once tried to convert me.

It's not that I don't have an open mind, it's that I don't enjoy the stuff. To me most of it just sounds obnoxious and intrusive.

Because as a rule, metal fans think they are all being picked on and have this "superior minority" attitude. Don't get me wrong I like a bunch of metal bands, Dissection and Moonsorrow ftw, but I also listen to Fall Out Boy, The Beatles, and Jurassic 5. People need to start not caring what other people think of their taste.

People sterotype metal because they dont know what it is. People who listen to metal can not like metal. If you don't listen to metal they shouldn't sterotype it.

Dunno about any other guitarist (cept maybe Petrucci) but I cannot play guitar to a drummer who has no rhythm. It's impossible. Listen to the intro to Kill The King by Megadeth and listen to how perfectly in time the guitar and drums are.

I didn't think the vocals were bad...What would you prefer Michael Bolton singing it? He has a "good" voice. Or maybe Kanye West rapping?

Because it's all the same.

A bunch of white guys with long hair and no real reason to be angry screaming their depressing verses about war, suicide and unrequited love, whilst everyone just does what they want on their instruments, meanwhile there's a solo here and there but they all sound the same too.

Thats coming from someone who has a pictyre of three rappers in his sig talking about the hip hop legacy. You say metal is all the same. You need to check your ears. Ive heard 3 to 4 rap songs that all had the same exact beat.

That's borderline racist. Herman Li and Howard Jones are my favourite metal musicians and they aren't white.

My only problem is when friends or random people at my school look at my ipod and say my taste suck just because I have about 500 rock and classic rock songs then 1000 metal songs. They will say oh you don't have this new song that all the radio stations are playing and follow through to tell me I have no taste in music because not many people listen to metal and if most people don't like it it's awful.

I don't know why anyone would dislike metal but it's all personal preference. Like I honestly wouldn't care if I was the only one in the world liking Children of Bodom or Slayer, I would stay a fan because I like the music.

White guys? Long Hair? That pisses me off. Not all metal musicians are white, look at Killswitch Engage or Sevendust or Suffocation. Angry? Screaming their depressing verses? How about I say something like this? "Rap is all about some high black person attempting to sing about drugs?" I don't mean that because it's not exactly the truth. Everyone does what they want on instruments, it's funny you mention that.

Yeah it sounds like they're doing whatever they want when they sound nearly the same. Solos? Wow, that is halarious because there's 2 solos in that song and they sound very different. Why don't you get your facts straight before you bash metal again? Thanks! :D Oh and I wasn't dissing rap, I was putting it into perspective like you did to metal.

I'm the opposite. I hate most catchy music. I like music that requires many listens before you get used to it. I'm sure if a bunch of rap and pop music listeners gave metal a try, they'd prefer it to the crap they listen to.

GodLovesDead

I agree. I think people who like rap would probably like metal too. They both generally focus around the low beat of drums, and there is a lot of shouting in both. Metal is guitar-centric though, while Rap is not.

I'm still wondering how people think metal isn't mainstream. Its been in the mainstream for years now.

People don't like the genre, cause yeah, they want a good tune they can drive to, sing a long with, etc, etc. Why is that wrong? As I said, WHO ARE YOU to judge someone's musical taste? Maybe they just can't understand where your coming from, in the same way you don't understand where they're coming from.

For everyone saying "oh its complex, theres talent, blah blah blah" theres also a lot of just terrible bands out there, and a lot of good, talented pop acts. John Mayer is a great guitar player, loads of talent, not a great lyricist but writes good pop and blues songs. He doesn't play triplets while screaming, but does that make him a bad musician?

The newer bands I really like are Mastodon, High On Fire, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Between the Buried and Me.

A lot of other stuff I either don't like, or just isn't new. Meshuggah, Opeth, In Flames, Soilwork and a lot of other scandinavian metal I've been listening to since I bet a lot of other people on this board were in elementary school.

As said, I LOVE metal, but I won't bash people for liking Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance songs (I like some of their songs actually) and other bands.

Hell, my favorite singer is Brandon Boyd from Incubus. I'm also a huge fan of Social Distortion, MXPX, Oasis, etc, etc. As I got older, I stopped caring, and just listened to what I like.

And for the metal fan that got pissed off at another poster for bashing metal, now you know how he feels when you bash hip hop.

Instead of saying "its talentless garbage" how bout you listen to it, and realize that a lot of rappers are in someways poets (I'm talking about guys like Mos Def and Common, NOT Soulja Boy).

Because it's all the same.

A bunch of white guys with long hair and no real reason to be angry screaming their depressing verses about war, suicide and unrequited love, whilst everyone just does what they want on their instruments, meanwhile there's a solo here and there but they all sound the same too.

The newer bands I really like are Mastodon, High On Fire, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Between the Buried and Me.

people who listen to mainstream music because they actually like the way it sounds, i have no problem with. People who listen to mainstream music, cause it's what everyone else is listening to, and because it's popular=sheep

Lol, I would have a lot more respect for modern metal without those death growl bands. I can understand why people would like the screaming in their music, but the growling just sounds silly.

What annoys me about one of my friends is that he says that Metallica's St. Anger album is their best one...

I know everyone has their own opinion on metal...but come on now.
