I'm still wondering how people think metal isn't mainstream. Its been in the mainstream for years now.
People don't like the genre, cause yeah, they want a good tune they can drive to, sing a long with, etc, etc. Why is that wrong? As I said, WHO ARE YOU to judge someone's musical taste? Maybe they just can't understand where your coming from, in the same way you don't understand where they're coming from.
For everyone saying "oh its complex, theres talent, blah blah blah" theres also a lot of just terrible bands out there, and a lot of good, talented pop acts. John Mayer is a great guitar player, loads of talent, not a great lyricist but writes good pop and blues songs. He doesn't play triplets while screaming, but does that make him a bad musician?
The newer bands I really like are Mastodon, High On Fire, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Between the Buried and Me.
A lot of other stuff I either don't like, or just isn't new. Meshuggah, Opeth, In Flames, Soilwork and a lot of other scandinavian metal I've been listening to since I bet a lot of other people on this board were in elementary school.
As said, I LOVE metal, but I won't bash people for liking Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance songs (I like some of their songs actually) and other bands.
Hell, my favorite singer is Brandon Boyd from Incubus. I'm also a huge fan of Social Distortion, MXPX, Oasis, etc, etc. As I got older, I stopped caring, and just listened to what I like.
And for the metal fan that got pissed off at another poster for bashing metal, now you know how he feels when you bash hip hop.
Instead of saying "its talentless garbage" how bout you listen to it, and realize that a lot of rappers are in someways poets (I'm talking about guys like Mos Def and Common, NOT Soulja Boy).
