Even in dirt poor countries you can still play soccer. You can't say that for a lot of American sports.

Because its so cheap and easy to play. All you need is a ball, and two things for goal posts.

You can play football without the gear. You won't live long enough to play another game but you still can. :P

This. And it's considered to be the people's sports. All you need is a ball and 4 rocks to play it. Seeing some of the biggest athletes in the world play a game that you also played just a few minutes ago with your friends out on the grass, a game where you actually know all the rules, will make it more fun to watch.

But pretty pointless because you don't really need no skills IMO, you just got to be big and bulky and can run. In Footy, you can learn new skills, tricks, improve on shooting, passing pretty much by yourself. But in American Football it's pretty pointless just passing it to the air don't you think?

Weighing 80lbs, running around in hot-pants and letting your long flowing locks down does not qualify as a sport. Neither does being to much of a limp wristed sissy to play a real sport. And don't even get me started on those sweet 0-0 tie games.

While I agree on the 0-0 games. Don't knock the hot pants...in fact lets apply this to every sport.

You don't weigh 80lbs you have to be very physically fit to run 6000-8000 kilometers on average per game. It's more of a sport than you'll ever see I bet you're **** and can't even send in a cross.

Why? Because all you need is a ball to play, simple as that really. Since it is a very accessible game, it's popularity should not come as a surprise. Then take into consideration how close Europe, Africa, and Asia and their countries are to each other, and of course they will have an unification for the love of the sport. Over here in the Americas we do not feel that connection since we're so far away, and so accordingly we have developed our own sports and traditions. All of the popular sports here are faster paced and have more scoring, so it is understandable why most of us would see soccer as boring. I'm not hating on soccer, I respect it and watch the World Cup, but that's how I see it.

Bah that's nothing, in my day we'd kiss each other on the cheek whenever there was a completion.
