It's a form of entertainment anyone can play. All you need is a ball (or ball-shaped object) and feet :P

links136

What about a crunched beer can? Will that work also?

thats a ball? if you were with a bunch of drunks you potentially could. BTW I see nothing manly about smacking each others ass's after every play

Who's smacking who's ass now? Is that a american football reference?

Why? Because all you need is a ball to play, simple as that really. Since it is a very accessible game, it's popularity should not come as a surprise. Then take into consideration how close Europe, Africa, and Asia and their countries are to each other, and of course they will have an unification for the love of the sport. Over here in the Americas we do not feel that connection since we're so far away, and so accordingly we have developed our own sports and traditions. All of the popular sports here are faster paced and have more scoring, so it is understandable why most of us would see soccer as boring. I'm not hating on soccer, I respect it and watch the World Cup, but that's how I see it.

 You can't be serious, "soccer" is very popular in South America...

Of course I'm serious. Football, baseball, basketball, and hockey are the popular sports here and Canada. They're all faster paced and involve more scoring so I think that point makes sense. As for South America, I think that goes back to it being a more accessible game in general.

Only if you're playing it seriously. For many (like kids), it's just entertainment, a fun game to play. Just go out and kick the **** out of a ball :P

Sweden wins more Golds than the US in hockey, but more Swedes would rather watch a soccer game than a hockey game. It's not simply about accessibility.

I wasn't referring to that, not that it matters because that depends on the person, and not everyone in South America plays "street soccer".

Smacking someone's ass isn't part of the game though. Being a limp wristed nanny-boy is part of socker.

Totally missed you saying Europe for some reason >.> in that case there's not much i can disagree on... besides maybe the fact that distances matter very little nowadays. And in most ways, Europe and North America feel closer than Europe and Asia... so it's still kinda weird how US and Canada haven't joined in the worship for soccer that everybody else has.

1. You obviously are incredibly biased against football as a sport. 2. With your extensive knowledge and experience with many different football players seemed to have made the assumption that all are "limp wristed nanny-boys". 3. You seem unable to grasp that football can be played with any ball and 4 objects to form a net. It can be scaled down to any size as well. It can easily be played in a small alley, backyard etc. American Football requires large goal posts, markings and more importantly: space. 4. Football requires no physical contact so it can be played on almost every surface. Have fun getting tackled on gravel or concrete.

I think that has to due with the other sports becoming too ingrained within both countries. They don't want to adjust or give soccer a chance since it's different, and I think that's the same problem a lot of people not from here have with our sports.

Why is the game popular in all of Europe, Australia, Japan even etc. all the "developed" countries then practically every rich country but 2 leaving out the US and Canada even though it IS IMO popular here too? It's not about having money or not, it's the game.

You're leaving half of my argument out of it. Those continents are so much closer to each other so the love of the game has had a much easier time spreading over there. Then take into account how long soccer has been around and of course it'll be everyone's favorite sport. If you don't break up what I'm saying into pieces and read it as a whole, I think it makes sense.

because it's much more of a sport than the american favorites. yeah, I said it.

Pirate700

Weighing 80lbs, running around in hot-pants and letting your long flowing locks down does not qualify as a sport. Neither does being to much of a limp wristed sissy to play a real sport. And don't even get me started on those sweet 0-0 tie games.

May i inform you that people dont live in huts outside of America. Its shocking i know

It's a form of entertainment anyone can play. All you need is a ball (or ball-shaped object) and feet :P

And you need skills or you're going to make an embarrassment out of yourself. ;)

True, I think too many yanks think the real football is an easy sport since they believe all you do is" kick the ball into the net and score" put these guys into a game and they won't get far at all, they'd make fools of themselves.

I dont know where they get it from either, you watch a 'football' game, and all it is pause-and-run, so yeah, it must be a lame boring sport:P

"sigh" it's not about it being easy or not. I have never heard anyone say they don't like it because he or she think it's easy. Hell, soccer is probably the #1 game played during elementary school. People don't like it because there is not enough scoring in comparison to the other popular sports.

So, its an extremely active sport, the amount of running every play on the field has to do is incredible. Its just right, a balance of star players, organisation and tactics.

So what? That's not enough to grab the attention of the people here. In all the other sports, teams score at least two or three times each. In soccer you get 0-0,1-1, maybe 2-1 goals per match. Well to be blunt, that's not good enough. People don't have the patience to watch 90 minutes just to hope that at least one teams scores. I think baseball is a good example of what we like. We love to get those 2-1 pitching duels, but at the same time, those 6-5 games can provide just the same amount of enjoyment. In soccer it's just the same low scoring with potential 0-0 ties.

You do know that most people also watch "soccer" to see magic (a term used for soccer) and how well their team plays, aside from scoring right? if you watch "soccer" only for scoring then you shouldn't watch it at all.

That "magic" applies for all sports. All true sports fan like to see how well their team plays and examine the play itself. My point has to do with the popularity not whether it's a good sport or not. The popular sports here have more scoring during the game, and that it is the #1 reason why soccer is unsuccessful here.

But people do not just watch Football (real one) to see how many goals a team can score. In England, fans go to the matches to support their team, for the electric atmospheres and mostly for bragging rights. I went to a baseball game in America last year and admittedly it was dull; with an occasional 'lets go red sox'.Quite simply, sports like baseball will never generate the vocal, passionate fans that football has created. It is more than a sport.

So what? A 0-0 tie game in soccer can be 10 times more exiting than any other sport with scores in the 100s.
