I haven't met many. The closest to a "classical music elitist" on this forum is Pianist as far as I can tell, and he's no elitist - he just knows what the likes, what he doesn't like and why. Haven't seen (m)any metalheads or hip-hoppers go on silly bashing sprees here either.....

In real life... well, it's not "elitists" I find most annoying, it's just the bashers. About 90% of the time, the arguments I hear against metal tend to be found on ignorance and generalization. And, having read through this whole thread, I can say that there's a lot of laughable posts here.

From my experience here....metal and classic rock are tied for first. They are most vocal against other opinions of their genre.

This ^.

But it´s the metal fanboys/fangirls that does my head in most frequently, but they are both equal in their persistent exertion of musical ignorance.

To me, any music elitist gets on my nerves. There is no "better" genre of music, just whatever appeals to ones taste.

Classical Rock "Music died with the 80s" Elitists. So lazy, and they no idea how amazing this decade has been for music.

Metalheads tend to be very defensive, but not really aggressive, usually only respond to comments bashing metal or patronising it.

I don't follow. There is a reason for subgenres in metal. Generally a person not used to much metal will not like death metal but will be open to most thrash cause he's used to it from radio.

Metal is metal. There is NO good reason whatsoever to break down a sub-genre like metal into 50,000 nano-genres. I swear almost every metal band thinks they are the sole member of their own nano-genre of metal. "My band is aquatic metal!" "Well, mine has pioneered the sound of solar wind metal." "Oh yeah, we do igneous metal. Sometimes sedimentary. Never metamorphic...that is sellout"

They still like metal. Why can't he say that he likes Iron Maiden and not Suffocation. One could say that they like Englebert Humperdinck and not like Wayne Newton. Guess what? They still like pop music.

Because one can use standard tuning with lots of melody and clear soaring vocals while the other uses downtuned guitars, double bass and gutteral cookie monster vocals :| There are very few legit sub-genres so a real metalhead doesn't get confused. Sometimes its people making up wacky stuff for the fun of it but it's not legit.

I am guessing that you don't listen to metal, hence your lack of knowledge. Without breaking metal into sub-genres it would be very hard to discuss it, asking "what other death metal bands do you like" is much more informative than just "what other metal bands do you like". Metal sub-genres often vary both musically and lyrically, certain sub-genres carry certain messages, which requires separating them.

Also, I really don't understand how breaking down a genre into sub-genres is elitist but whatever.

It's intellectualizing something that doesn't warrant intellectualizing. It's a genre of music, not theorizing on Planck's constant. Yes, I do listen to metal. If I discuss music with someone I refer to the band I like, not some trite label. I also listen to ska music, and when discussing it I don't say, "Say, fella, you should listen to this Third Wave Ska band!". I say, "Say, fella, you should listen to (band name)." Then we discuss that band and bands that are like it...there is no need for a label. If a person says, "Hey, is this band (meaningless sub-genre)?", I reply with, "Well, they are like (band we both know of)" because these sub-genres that people come up with are hardly structured in any established rubric which someone not knowing anything about music could classify.

There's a thrash metal station on iTunes. Also, they play Metallica sometimes as thrash metal on the rock station in my area.

Yes, but now listen to THIS and then THIS. Do you hear the difference? It is obvious that both bands play different kinds of metal, lumping them together would create a lot of confusion.

I really don't see what's your point, is it that hard to understand that using terms such as death metal, thrash metal, black metal, NWOBHM and so on makes discussing metal music MUCH easier? Plus, all of these sub-genres are different in how they sound and what themes they explore.

because its one of a few ways to account for diversity.

I like broccoli
I hate potatoes

both are vegetables

now, do I love or do I hate vegetables? Idunno, but one can assume that I tend to like my green vegetables, while I would generally dislike root vegetables.

I admit a lot of people go to extremes to ****fy their subgenre of metal, but some categories are needed. There is enough distinction between a lot of metal to warrant it.

At this point, we are all just saying the same things back to each other. So in the spirit of non-redundance, I'll wave the white flag and agree that there should be labels for every different type of every different type of music.

Look THIS and THIS is close enough to be in one genre but has nothing to do with THIS and none of those are THIS. sub genres can help people identify what they like and helps othersn explain what something sounds like.

Metalheads can range for peace loving buds to aryan type elitists.

I've found classic rock fans are quite obnoxious. They talk about how all music today is crap, and only the oldies are good. And they refer to old music as music from 1980.

Some of the opera-loving public is pretty bad, too. I want to see Street Scene and The Consul, for crying out loud. Yes, Tosca is wonderful, but we've heard it a hundred times.

Never really encountered a particularly bad metalhead or rap fan.

I would say metalheads, just because it seems like some of them spend more time and energy discussing the genres they hate than the one they like.

[QUOTE="X360PS3AMD05"]There is a reason, because a guy who likes Iron Maiden might not be into Suffocation, two different sub-genres.FragStains
They still like metal. Why can't he say that he likes Iron Maiden and not Suffocation. One could say that they like Englebert Humperdinck and not like Wayne Newton. Guess what? They still like pop music.

You miss the point of subgenres then. In a genre that's built it's fanbase on recommendations and the tape trade, labels are important whether or not you like them. If you like Iron Maiden, don't like Suffocation, and someone recommends you Spawn Of Possession, would you bother to check them out knowing you don't like the sound of a lot of metal?

We give names to those types for a reason. Not just that, but from a composition standpoint they are different enough to warrant distinction. The only time it gets ridiculous is when you throw in adjectives that describe the music from a subjective standpoint rather than the composition (IE: Atmospheric, Viking, and things like that). Besides, you act like it's just metal. Hip-hop, electronica, pop, just plain old rock all have just as many if not more subgenres.
