on the interwebz, the new-age metalheads seem to be the worst. in real life, it's the rappers/hip-hop junkies. so many times, I've had one come up to me ask me what I'm listeing to (usually while I'm wearing an Iron Maiden T-Shirt. hmm, what do you think I'm listening to?) and when I tell 'em I get the usual, what? what is that crap? blah blah blah. serves me right for going to a college in central Florida with a music program.

Is it difficult to say I like Iron Maiden dude....can you recommend some similar bands?

LJS9502_basic

Not on the internet or any impersonal space. Though that's what I do when I ask for recommendations from friends in person since it's a lot easier to show them the sound that I like. I haven't found a genre that I like every band in. :P

The genre and it's fans are so widespread and recommendations are really one of the few major ways you'll be finding new music. You certainly won't be using iTunes or MTV like you would be with a lot of other genres. I mean you can use a forum or some place on the internet, and point out things like "oh, I really like the drumming at 0:53, do you know of something similar?," but that gets tedious and difficult, Online it's much easier to categorize things by their genre (and yes, I do think some of the subgenres are ridiculous; we can do without sludge, funeral, brutal, psychedelic, and numerous others). There's a few that are obviously needed (as is the case with any genre of music), and a few of those subgenres that are so well-established that lumping them in with others would be difficult, but otherwise I would say it's such an oversaturated genre as it is it'd be difficult to begin with.

Anybody who thinks that rap isn't music is ignorant and/or stupid by definition. Sadly, a few of my classic rock loving friends think it's not...

When I started searching music out on the internet I just followed suggestions as to similar bands and not by genres. And yes....while I can understand some subgenres.....when there are too many they become meaningless.

LJS9502_basic
Exactly, and a lot of them are meaningless. Tags like atmospheric are virtually worthless in telling me what I'm going to be listening to. Though when I hear progressive metal, I'm thinking a heavier version of Pink Floyd or King Crimson, and generally that's what I get. Same with any of the other major subgenres really. There's an extent to which it's useful. I can definitely see what you're saying there.

Except for the fact that it's a pretty blatant (and incorrect) generalization... I've met almost no metalheads who think rap isn't music... sure, a lot don't like it, but that's very different. ;)

I'm pretty sure it's classical. They will consistently go out of their way to try and proove that their music is the best with trivial facts and open ended arguments. Most metalheads or rap fans will just say "u suck ___ is the best" and go and listen to their music with no questions asked.

Ah and you were who before? Because you can't be new and telling me about myself. Nonetheless, that wasn't a generalization. I said I'd have it happen and I have. And point of fact no where did I say all metal heads state such. I laughed at the comment because it was funny. So the word generalization does not apply.

You attempted to argue with chessmaster when he complained about it being a generalisation, which suggests that you think he was wrong on that count. And, uh, as for this not being my main account - no ****, Sherlock.

Metalheads easily, and I'M a huge metalhead. I just got back from reading the myspace metal forums and Jesus Christ, why oh why did I ever read that garbage. If you wanna read something really horrible, search Cliff Burton, Dimebag Darrell, or Chuck Schuldiner on those boards. Or you know what better yet don't because once you do a piece of your humanity might die inside.

Mostly that I find that rap fans in general have the opinion that rap is the only music with any artistic value these days. For myself, I don't entirely dislike rap, I just find that these days it's more about posturing, image, and "street cred" than the music.

Everyone has their own amount of stupid elitists. Ashame that music isn't about being the best, it's about pleasing your crowd. Talent may be a different area, but there there isn't one kind of talent, and there isn't one kind of music taste. I listen to prodominately everything. Promdominately. Make no assumptions though :).

Uneducated elitists. It doesn't matter what the genre is - easily the most annoying person you can encounter in a music debate is the loud-mouthed one who thinks he knows a great deal about music but actually knows very little. I have no problem whatsoever with well informed elitism. If you have taken the time to study music extensively and hone your tastes, by all means point out the flawed conceptions other people have about music, and be proud of your taste, even if it turns out to be quite narrow. You deserve it for all your hard work.

Frankly, though, it's the anti-elitists who bother me the most. Especially the "politically correct" anti-elitists who believe such things as "all compositions are of equal quality" and "there is no piece of music which is better written than another as long as some people like it." Or "all music is equally complex." These people irritate me the most because they are, almost without exception, totally oblivious to the fact that their anti-elitist position is just another form of elitism - believing that they are superior because they like many genres, and failing to realize that in most cases, the "many genres" to which they are open are actually very similiar on a fundamental musical level.

I'd go with Classical fans, because some times they fail to acknoledge music was made after a certain century :/

[QUOTE="LODisapproval"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] I've thought so since they started posting and agreeing with each other.

majoras_wrath

Not at all, you're just widely disliked enough that it's hardly unlikely that two people will agree against you.

I don't get it, what has LJ done to deserve any kind of hate? Especially in this thread. Oh wait, yeah, you're DeitySlapper

Its the only logical conclusion. :V

+1 to everything you said

i find i'm an elitist in a musical sense, but thats because i spent the last 15 years studying music and it's composition. so when i hear the same melody and beat in a rap song for 3 minutes straight i have problems accepting that as a "good" piece of music

[QUOTE="DarthSatan"]

Rap definitely. maybe that's just from the standpoint that I find rap to be soulless and talentless dreck however.

effena

I'm confused. How does that make us rap fans elitists?

He never said it did.
