I loved the beta, hopefully I'll get the real game soon. I didn't spend much time with Champion, but I leveled up to 30 in CoH before I got tired of not really controlling my character in combat. I tend to role Batman-esque heroes with a focus on combos more than power usage. In that regard, DCUO is far more accommodating than CoH

I told you I was in the beta because I have personally played the game and that makes my opinion as valid as any. You were saying I'm basing my opinion only on someone else's, which is bogus because I have played the game. I know its downfalls. These reviews confirm that the flaws in the beta are present in the final version of the game.

Mediocre review? GiantBomb and EuroGamer are both respected, legitimate sources that review almost every new game release. In case you haven't noticed, the majority of reviews this game has received are mediocre. On Metacritic at this time, the game has averaged 64/100 (Roughly 6/10) on the Playstation 3 and hasn't even garnered enough reviews on PC to warrant a final score.

Oh, and great analogy with the chocolate ice cream. That's cute. Nevermind the fact that the majority of those who were in the beta are speaking out about the game, agreeing that it's disappointing at best. But that's just fine. Enjoy DC Universe Online: The game that has not only failed to deliver, but that will never amount to anything more than just another generic MMO in a sea of many other generic MMOs.

THA-TODD-BEAST

So because they are well respected, their reviews cannot be mediocre? I'm sorry but I'm sure most people choose to look at the content of the actual articles instead of the score and the name behind it.

Eurogamer is notorious for giving low scores, but they had mostly positive things to say about the game, with their main complaints being about the quests, chat system, and the monthly fee should be more reasonable. And while I mostly agree with the eurogamer review, Gerstmans review was laughable. His entire review basically came down to: I didn't like the combat, the quests were boring, so I didn't like the gme.

Neither reviewer talks about the checkpoint races that unlock as you progress and bounties that you need to team up with other players to complete. They don't talk about the eight man raids and duos that unlock once you reach lvl 30, or the fact that you get hard modes for duos, alerts, and raids. I'm surprised they didn't mention feats. Feats encourage players to explore, replay missions, etc and also awards them with more skill points. They also could have talked about the different roles(dps, tank, healer, controller) and how important they are once you get into the later parts of the game. There's also no mention of the investigations or mission briefings, or the collections that reward you with more gear.

So yeah, looking past the score and name I would consider both reviews to be mediocre. If anyone actually wants an in depth look at the game, check out IGN. They have a in progress review that is seven pages so far and he goes into details about the different aspects of the game.

@felipeinside

Can you show me where I mentioned his opinion or experience with the game. I asked him how two reviews proved the game was "average at best" and why their opinions mattered more than other reviewers

I know exactly what you asked me, but my questions had nothing to do with his experience with the beta.

And why should he continue playing? Because his job is to actually review video games, and what I expect from a "well respected" reviewer is for them to review the game in its entirety, not to give a half assed impression and quit the game when they get bored. Especially with DCUO being a MMO.

Did he say his opinion was more right than others? 2 reviews are out and they both say it's an average game, which imo it is..... some people like it though, which is great. I was expecting lots more...FelipeInside

Umm, no he did not flat out say it......but he certainly has implied it a few times. He called out the op by saying "incredible game, right?" after throwing out a bad review of the game. The op thinks the game is incredible, good for him. Throwing out a review to prove another opinion wrong is silly, reviews are just opinions of people who are paid to give them. What makes a reviewer more an expert on games than any of us? lol. I've been playing video games longer than some of these reviewers have been alive. I don't read reviews other than from players personally. In the end my beef was tossing out a review as if that validates some opinion. It was silly.

ahhh gotcha. Still, I agree that it is still too early to say that DCUO is INCREDIBLE. Incredible is a very strong word and not every game gets there. For now it's an OK-Average MMO, maybe with time it can be improved into something more...

Eurogamer: 6/10

Add that to the "memo."

The game is average at best. If anything these reviews prove it. Oh, and I did form my own opinion because I was in, you know, the beta. That's how I came to dislike the game to begin with.

THA-TODD-BEAST

I see, so now you were in beta......and somehow that makes your opinion more right than someone else's? I see you found another mediocre review as well, good job. I hate chocolate ice cream, it sucks really bad. I'm going to find two more people that hate it to make it true. Toss pizza in as well, it sucks. If you don't get the point by now.......

I told you I was in the beta because I have personally played the game and that makes my opinion as valid as any. That's fine, but your first post I quoted said nothing about beta, you simply posted some review score and flew your victory flag as if it somehow made it all fact.

As for calling it a mediocre review, I was speaking of how the review rated the game, not the quality of the review.

I have yet to play the game, I am simply respecting the opinion of the op. His opinion is no less than yours or some reviewer who is onlydifferent from us in thathe is getting paid to write his thoughts.

My point was I thought it silly you posted a review and then called out the op's opinion based on that score. If you would have put your own beta experience in the post to begin with we never had this conversation. It was not what you said but rather the delivery.

Either way I appreciate hearing from all players on how a game is, I pay more attention to them than I do any reviewer. We are the best reviewers because we play the games because we want to, not because we have to.

I believe you, but to the op it is an incredible experience and likely to others as well. I have yet to play it but I would not doubt I would share your opinion, I will probably try it.

Yes of course, if the op thinks it's Incredible by all means he is allowed to. What worries me is that if gamers think DCUO like it is now is INCREDIBLE, we have brought our standards pretty low....

Then I don't see why you highlighted that part of my post(which was about Gerstmanns review) instead of just asking me the question.

Of course there is no point in a gamer finishing a game if they don't enjoy it. I know I've quit a bunch of games because they were boring to me.

Well that was my point about the review. The reviewer played the game, thought it was boring (quests and gameplay), therefore that's why he gave such a low score. Sorry if my messages came across mixed....

Except he isn't just a gamer playing a game. Idk, maybe I expect too much from reviewers?

I don't think its unreasonable for a reviewer to have to complete a game before they review it. Especially when thousands of people will read it. And while he can't really complete a MMO, I do expect reviewers to play and review most, if not all aspects of a game. Who knows, maybe he did and didn't feel the need to talk about any of the things I mentioned earlier.

This is a SOE game they tend to have bad launches, they usually get decent later on with patches as well, but then SoE tends to wreck them. If this pattern continues we are at the first phase.

But if both the combat and the quests are boring, then why play a game...?

FelipeInside

Because some may people enjoy the combat and others simply like living in and exploring a world they have previously only read about in DC comics and seen in movies. The game is best for DC fans. Exploring the DC universe may be enough to satisfy some people for the game.

A world doesnt need good quests or combat to be fun, in fact some games that are considered the greatest of all time had terrible combat (and no/bad quests).

Yeah well, no one likes paying, but if it's free, "most" of the time it's bad with bugs and the like. Paying subscription on an MMO most of the time assures you more quality..... and gives you endless hours of gameplay.

I found a bunch of iconic places so far. The statue of Superman that was built after he fought Doomsday, Crime Alley where the Waynes were killed, the Bat Signal, Amusement Mile where Jokers hideout is located, and the LexCorp building. You can also check out Arkham Asylum and Star Labs. Which i"m stoked because I hated the skin I chose and just found out it has a vendor to buy a different one.

Right now The Daily Planet is bubbled off by Brainiac so you can't get to it. And I think Wayne Manor isn't located in Gotham but you can find the Wayne Enterprise building.

I'll get flamed for this, but imo (according to my experience in beta), not now. Maybe in the future it will, but for now it doesn't look like a long lasting MMO. Saying that, I can see your icon, so you'll love it anyways cause you get to fight alongside Superman....

I agree with you. It kinda seems like a one hit wonder and I hate investing my time in games that dont rise above all the rest. Is there any customization in this game or is it just picking a desired character from a list?

Well, as you fly around the city you get a little messages that pop up telling what part of the city you're in. I noticed Crime Alley as I was flying around and decided to check it out because I remembered it from the comics. I even took a picture of it.

Its hard to tell in the pic but its a pair of roses on the ground and when you get closer you get a message that says Wayne Memorial or something. On the right is the theater they were leaving.

Lots of customization when you create a character, but then it goes out the window cause as you pick up new gear, it changes your appearance....so the character creation is kinda pointless. You can turn off the "changing look with new gear" option....but then your character always looks the same. This is one thing that sort of puts me off it too...

That is freaking awesome !!!

Any chance of taking more screenshots and sending them to me?

I can't play the game so it would be nice to see it through your eyes.... Thx

Sure, I can post them in the screenshot thread, or send you a pm when I add them to photobucket. For some reason I always forget to take screenshots, especially during combat, all my screens so far are just me flying or standing around.

I don't quite get your point here. For me that's one of the really well handled details of the game. Each item you pick up and equip adds its appearance to your list of available appearances even if you unequip and discard the item afterwards. I got my regular appearance locked, but once in a while I'll look through the different new options I've collected.

Sure, or even just link me your photobucket account so I can browse them every day. Don't worry about combat, I actually love screenshots when people are just flying around and looking at scenery....

Yeah I know, I'm sort of on a dilemma there.... I love designing my characters, and then adding armour and gear to it, but not that it changes the original aspect. Sort of a normal medieval fantasy example....

No of course you can't play as the Heroes or Villians. (although later on you can use them in I believe training simulations or PvP) There is a bit of class customization....

There is a bunch of customization options. Chest, hand, head, face, etc are some of the different clothing/armor pieces you can mix and match. Throughout the game you can collect styles, so even if you don't like they way a piece of armor looks, you can still use the stats from that armor while using the visual style of one more to your liking. You have six different powers to choose from and each of them has two roles. One is for damage and the other which unlocks at lvl 10 is either tank, healer, or controller. There is also a wide array of weapons to choose from including bow, dual pistol, staff, two handed, brawling, etc.

If you want to see the different customization options, gamespot has a now playing video where they go through the character customization with one of the devs.

There is legends PvP that lets you play as some of the heores and villains but so far all of them are from Gotham, so Batman, Joker, Robin, Huntress, Bane, and a couple others.

When I was in the beta it didn't let me play Legends PvP..... weird....

haha, you seriously cant be pleased can you? Designing a new character is pointless because you get new gear. Turning off new gear is pointless because then you will look the same. Do you even read what you type.

Do you even read what I type? I said it's a DILEMMA for me, cause I don't like it either way.....lol Yes, it's a bit crazy, but that's just how I feel. Just in case you don't know what the word means: A dilemma (Greek: δί-λημμα "double proposition") is a problem offering at least two possibilities, neither of which is practically acceptable or convenient.

Mate, I had it on pre-order.... And believe it or not, when I was lucky enough to play the beta....I cancelled my pre-order. And now that I find it's $5 more expensive that any other MMO out there....STUFF THEM !!!

problably a good call on your part.

it looks really good but honestly so few MMOs deliver, especially the ones with well-known content (i.e. the Star Trek MMO)

Well I'm level 30, the game is better now (by far) than the day I bought it. Unlike AoC/WAR I'm going strong, at this point I had quit them both.

It's the subtleties that have grown on me, the interplay of controller/healer (I'm healer) and just the shear amount of possible combinations of skills/weapons/traveling.

Tons of fun, makes WoW seem like a spreadsheet battle IMO. 200 hit combo FTW!

I also like that achievements matter, in that 100 ahiev pts = 1 skill pt.

85 warlock (afflic primarily)

85 druid (resto/feral kitty)

80 hunter

80 DK

81 Paladin

/done with WoW

Its not DCUO vs WoW though, they are different animals, I'm just done with spreadsheet combat for awhile; I'm liking the ninja gaiden/GTA vibe in DCUO and I don't think I'm going back to WoW (I've said that before though).

Some new, unsurprising review scores courtesy of Metacritic:

Gamespot - 7/10

EuroGamer Italy - 7/10

Gameplanet - 6/10

Here's a post I made two weeks ago before it had been reviewed, at which point I was ridiculed by "Advid-Gamer" just for stating how I felt about the game:

Those who don't want the game aren't at all too "cool" for it, they - like me - just experienced the beta first-hand and know that it's little more than another generic action MMO. I'd give the game 7/10 at best. It has some neat concepts and I like that they've made it more than a no-skill click fest, but it's still just not all that great and definitely not far above the other MMO titles out there.THA_TODD-BEAST

Thus far, the majority of review scores are on my side. I guess I can enjoy having the last laugh, right?

I'm not sure what you mean by spreadsheet combat. Do you mean complex background numbers and figuring out best stats to reforge, enchant and socket? What's the name of your Druid? I used to play with someone called haberman.

Then again when was the last time a full-fledged MMO scored 8/10 or higher across the board since WoW (not including its exp. packs)?
