The GOTY Edition Free Content Pack will download automatically for everyone who already owns the game

The content pack additions include:

  • "Action" mode - Featuring a crosshair, easier aiming and toned down recoil, reduced damage and open access to a wide range of weaponry Action mode is the perfect first step for players into the world of Red Orchestra.

  • "Classic" mode blends the gameplay innovations of the new game with the tactical and edgy gameplay of the original giving the fans of the first game exactly what they want.

  • Mamayev Kurgan - complete new map, featuring both close-quarters battles in trenches and bunkers, as well as longer ranged combat across the famous hill in Stalingrad

  • Refined and improved gameplay across the board, vehicle improvements, and way better performance and polish. We listened to the community and based on their feedback refined and tweaked almost every major feature in the game!

mamayevpreview_2.jpg

RANT: seems like the game they should've released at the start

BUT: a lot of other developers would sell this kind of content as paid DLC.

I'm very happy to see the changes Tripwire has made. As they say in their developer diary: the game was too hardcore for some, and not hardcore for others. It's great that they try to cater with both with different game modes.

Performance and gameplay issues were another big complaint that will be fixed.

Can't wait to try it out myself, and for the people that don't have it: try it on the free weekend;)

What are your thoughts about it ?

I would play it if the anit-speed hack system didn't keep session banning me due to lag spikes. The beta was absolute heaven before they implemented the anti speed hack.

Did it get an award for being "GOTY" or is this yet another developer slapping that onto their game?

C'mon man. Attracting new people? Realistically, that is not going to revive it. I don't think its even in the top Steam games, like at all. And thats a huge list.

It is in the list.

Why should it be revived ? The game isn't dead: servers haven't shut down, people still play. Sure, there aren't a lot but a game is only dead to me when you can't find a full sever anymore. And I have absolutely no problem finding decent populated servers (I'm not counting bots)

The main reason so many stopped playing was because it was too hardcore for some and not hardcore enough for others. They fixed that now.

The reason I stopped playing a few weeks back was because of the terrible server-side hit detection. They fixed that as well.

Besides, free steam weekends always bring a lot of attention to a game.

I understand the negativity towards this game, it was nowhere near done when it launched. But this new update brings a lot to the game. A lot that was wrong and people complained about has been fixed, why not give it a(nother) try ? ;)

Which is more then enough people to enjoy the game. Even taking into account the 64 player matches at least a couple of populated servers with good pings will be up with 600 players playing at once. Sure it could be better but you don't need a massive player base to enjoy a mp game.

Sry this game doesnt fit in my funds for gaming, this year new PC , Diablo 3 , Rift subscription, Medal of Honor new one , Guild Wars 2 CE , Torchlight 2 , and 50 more euros for special steam sales, so if this games hit summer sale maybe i will buy it.

Hopefully this will bring back some players, I pretty much stopped playing it after most servers turned into a massive bot-match with only three to four real players in between. Gosh I wish the servers would stop recognizing bots as real players.

All this negativity, so sad, RO 2 is a much better game than BF 3 or MW 3 as far as competitive FPS's go. At this point, I'd rather play RO 2 with its glitchy bots than BF 3 with its awful vehicle balance, bad maps, wacky headboxs and damage model.

I'm very excited to try this out when I get home from work today.

If I'm not mistaken that will be fixed too: you will see how many bots there are playing and how many actual players.

I completely agree. And now that classic mode will get rid of weapon unlocks it should be even more competitive :D

But this is the internet, if a game doesn't have at least 10,000 players at a time then it's dead and not worth anything.

Looking forward to the new map and especially the new modes! (especially the old school mode!).
To me personally this game was alot mroe enjoyable then any of hte latest COD games and in alot of ways is better then BF3 to. Sure it has a much smaller amount of players but everytime I go onlien to play there is always some servers to hop into, thats all I really need to be honest. Dont need millinos of people playing it to have fun. Besides a very bad launch I dont have many bad things to say about this game.

Remember me and Lawless had some great fun on this game awhile back working together on a team. Besides ARMA2 and DAYZ mod, I think this is the most fun ive had in an online shooter in the last handful of years.

Red Orchestra 2 is on Steam's weekend deal for $10.

I must say, perfect timing. This should give the game a sale boost once Steam puts up a ad for it on their front page.

I think they're trying to steal some of Iron Front - Liberation 1944's thunder. It's a WWII East Front combat simulation game using the ArmA II engine. It's being released on May 25th and it claims to offer up the hardcore realism of ArmA II in a WWII setting in hopes of appealing to the original Red Orchestra fans who felt that RO2 strayed to far from the realism path in hopes of gaining the CoD audience.

Kinda hard to stray from the realism path when RO wasn't realistic to begin with. It was just as unrealistic as RO2.

I agree. RO was more of a game than a sim, but compared to the other FPS games based on the UT engine, it was about as tactical as you were going to get.

RO2 moved more towards the mainstream FPS titles in hopes of appealing to a wider audience. They added stuff like heroes, weapons upgrades and unlocks, levelling, and all that CoD type stuff. They also increased base movement speed and made sure levels allowed for tonnes of SMGs, assault rifles and the like.

It was a failure. It angered much of the original RO fan base, driving many of them from the game and it failed to attract the CoD crowd.

Hopefully the new patch will bring back some players. I own it and will likely get back into it if the "classic" servers take off. If not, I've already pre-ordered Iron Front.

In no way did it "try to appeal to the CoD crowd" and I also love how you think that leveling and unlocks were invented by CoD. Not to mention there aren't heroes in CoD. Also, what level allows for tons of SMGs? The maps I played usually allowed 4-6. Perhaps more on other maps, but it wasn't much at all. I find your dislike for the game amusing.

I don't dislike the game. I think it's alright, but I prefered the greater variety found in the original. RO offered more vehicles, bigger maps, and weapons loadout restrictions more closely based on historical data than RO2's system where SMGs SVTs, and MP44s are found in much greater abundance.

Nor did I claim that CoD invented unlocks. I implied that the RO2 dev team wanted to appeal to the more mainstream FPS crowd of which COD is but one example. Sorry for giving you enough credit to have been able to infer that on your own. I won't make that mistake again.

If they wanted to appeal to the CoD crowd (and similar games) they wouldn't have made RO 2 period, I don't know how hardcore/elite/1337 you want to consider yourself, but RO 2 was in no way shape or form similar to those kind of games, not even close.

So how is it "appealing to the CoD crowd" by using stuff that has been used in games well before CoD? That's a stupid point. the game isn't anything like CoD, stop comparing them. So you say you preferred a great variety in RO but then hate that you can choose a greater variety of weapons in RO2? This game isn't a historical documentary it's supposed to be fun. Having more MP44's is a dumb complaint, not to mention they aren't nearly as abundant you claim they are, same with the SMGs. By the way, you still have yet to tell me the maps tthat allow "tons" of SMGs.

I don't dislike the game. I think it's alright, but I prefered the greater variety found in the original. RO offered more vehicles, bigger maps, and weapons loadout restrictions more closely based on historical data than RO2's system where SMGs SVTs, and MP44s are found in much greater abundance.

Well for the classic mode they've disabled weapon unlocks and tweaked the weapon loadouts to be more like RO. They removed the HUD elements and just gave us a mini-map. They've also slowed sprinting down and radcially increased the suppression.

As for RO1's maps, the best ones came out of the community. TripWire doesn't make the best maps.

That said, the launch for the game has been terrible. I'm excited to see if this classic mode can bring back the fun of RO but I'm not holding my breath. Graphics aside, RO is the better game than this in every other aspect.

RO felt desperate and chaotic, RO2 feels refined and clean. It was that feeling that set RO apart from other shooters. RO2 adapted to many modern gameplay conventions of mainstream shooters (lots of hud elements, unlock systems) and strayed away from that original feeling to much. The end was a very modern feeling, tactical shooter that had no real personality and a ton of bugs.

I think the worst part about their adpation of modern convention was their willingness to give the player a lot of variety of weapons to fight with. So many limited production weapons are in RO2. It really took me out of the experiance. You might as well be wielding AK's for the amount of STGs protoypes they had on the battlefield.

On the eastern front you would see Mosin Nagants, SVTs, PPSh varients, DShK and a few other LMG varients, K-98s,Gewehr 43 (limited quantities), MG 34s and MG 42s, and MP40s. That's about it. You wouldn't see all of the crazy guns that are in RO2. That was the worst part about the game for me once it's all said and done. In RO you got a rifle that had a bayonet. If you were lucky you got the LMG, an SMG, or a scoped rifle. That's what made RO1 so awesome. It was so deserpate fighting all of the time. Cycling 5 rounds of ammo through a rifle would take awhile and would kick hard making you have to re-sight in your target every single time.

RO2 you could just cycle a bolt perfectly every time and get easy headshots and you had to unlock the bayonet. Hell even if you buy a Mosin Nagant today you're given a bayonet. Every single rifle had a bayonet in WWII.

How was RO a better game in every aspect? The ridiculously unrealistic recoil? The unrealistically slow movement? What about the game is actually better than RO2? You can't just say that without having any reasons.

Both Wadsie and I have given reasons but it's apparent that you don't want to hear them. Further discourse with you will be a fruitless endeavour.

Wadsie. I agree. I hope that the classic mode works out and brings back some players. If not, hopefully Iron Front will do well. I know you're a fan of ArmA so will probably enjoy it. I'm looking forward to it but some early reviews out of Europe say the AI isn't really up to the task. Guess that means co-op time!

Except that you gave a bunch of BS reasons and Wasdie only gave the "chaotic vs refined" reason, which is hardly a reason RO is better "in every other aspect" You have yet to counter ANY of my points.

Rediculously unrealistic recoil?

Ever fire a Mosin Nagant 91/30? I have, I own one. They kick that much when you fire. They bruise your shoulder they kick so much and will knock you back if you're not paying attention. Also, every try to sprint with 50lbs of gear in your hand an a long rifle? You don't move around that fast.

Everything about the gameplay is better in RO. Guns are more difficult to control and add to the chaotic elements of the battlefield, the battlefields were much more open, the suppression mechanic actually meant something, the weapons were far more historical accurate with their numbers, the tanks were far more fun to control, you didn't have silly spotting mechanics or a magic airplane that could tell you the location of every enemey...

I could go on. RO2 attempted to merge the very unique gameplay found in RO with more mainstream shooters. They failed to deliever on both fronts. They couldn't make the game appealing to casual players and they lost the original feeling that made the original game so fun to play.

Never once did I ever have a deseprate rush through smoke and machine gun fire to jump into a Russian trench and bayonet somebody like I did in RO1. Those moments were just not in RO2. Everything was too clean, to refined.
