It's been officially confirmed by Chris Priestly of Bioware that the PC version of Mass Effect 3 will require Origin, and they have no plans to bring it to Steam at this time. What do my fellow PC gamers think of this? Any pre-order cancellations? Given Origin's reputation, I feel this will damage sales of the PC version.

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/8975536

"1)Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)

Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital.

2)Is constant Origin connection required or is it a single one off authentication when the game is first installed. Is there also a limit to the number of installations available?
Mass Effect 3 will require a one time, single authorization for the single player game. There is no limit to the number of installs. Playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer will require a constant connection.

3)Is Origin required for the retail versions of the game?

Origin is required for the PC versions of Mass Effect 3, both physical and digital.

4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?

During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

5) Is there an opt in or opt out clause for data collection?
Users will be allowed to opt-out of Mass Effect 3 data collection from inside the game.

6) I've seen reports that Origin is spyware. Is this true?
Origin is not spyware, and does not use or install spyware on user's machines. In order to allow Origin to install games and their patches for everyone to use, Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames in the ProgramData/Origin folder. This is an ordinary Windows function, not an information-gathering process.

7) Has the Origin EULA been updated following recent questions in Germany?

The German Origin EULA has been updated. For more information, please review the Origin EULA here:http://www.ea.com/1/product-eulas.

8) Is there a double-opt in for Mass Effect 3 marketing emails for German residents?

Yes, we always adhere to the German requirement of a double opt-in standard for marketing emails. Mass Effect 3 users must opt-in twice to receive these emails.

Well, yes, it is an EA game after all. I just hope they put it on Steam as well, at some point at least.

Yep, I was expecting it, considering they plan on doings things the Valve (Steam) way. @TheOtherTheog It "requires" Origin, like Steamworks games, it won't be on Steam, because unlike any other digital store, Steam doesn't sell you keys and a game download to activate under another digital client.

I have the Collectors Edition pre-ordered, which I'll still buy. I'll probably install a pirated version though unless there is something out there that can rip the spy-ware guts out of Origin.

I'm not putting that rootkit BS on my computer. I'm old enough to remember when StarForce was burning out people's disk drives, I don't trust this type of DRM not to f-up my PC.

In case you guys don't know, you can use Origin product keys multiple times across as many accounts as you like. You can split up that cost with friends.

So many people gonna pirate it.

Well, in my case this game is out of my list. Don't like Origin (not because they spy on your PC theories) but because I completely dislike EA. Guess I'll ask borrowed ME3 from a friend that will buy it for the PS3.

Predictable, and fine. Origins is still ****, and is still a glorified game launcher in the form of a reskinned EA downloader.

Um... people? It makes it really hard for me to avoid moderating the PC forum, if the people in it keep talking about their intentions to pirate games. I see where you're coming from, Origin is a piece of garbage and I'm not getting ME3 for PC if they force me to use Origin, but can we please try to cut back on the "I'm going to pirate the game now"-comments? It's weekend and I really don't want to have to "work" now. :P

Can't say that I care too much as I won't be purchasing it unless they're going to re-implement most of the lost RPG mechanics.

Personally I'm sick and tired of EA trying to ruin gaming. PC gaming was just fine without their crappy Origin system. I wish they would let sleeping dogs lie and just put the damned thing out on STEAM and quit forcing garbage down our throats.

ITT: a bunch of tools jumping on a bandwagon. Seriously, if you don't like Origin "because it's spyware and intrusive DRM" then you should abandon Steam too, as it's the exact same thing. Origin works fine and EA has every right to use their own DD service just like Valve does.

I don't know how many times people have to say it. Valve's hardware survey is opt in, they do not datamine your files. Origin's data gathering cannot be opted-out of, scans your hardware, drivers, programs, and file directories and reports back to EA. Stop comparing Steam to Origin in terms of what data is gathered.

I will sandbox Origin if I have to. Its a hell of an inconvience to do so, I would prefer to find a more efficient way of crippling it's behavior.

Actually, on first glance it's easy to compare. Steam gathers hardware data and asks first, Origin gathers everything and doesn't give you a chance to say no. Seems pretty clear-cut to me.

I am constantly amazed by people claiming Origin sends data back to the mothership, or that it scans your tax files, kiddie porn and whatever else.

It's like these people heard a rumour - and then ran with it and never bothered to check out any updates!

Well sir it turns out Origin uses Windows' built-in indexing app.... SHUT UP I'M NOT LISTENING LALALALA.

Awesome customer service. I had a problem activating my BF3 add-on and entered my phone number for a call back on their support site and got a return call within the first 10 minutes!!! She was polite, helpful and most importantly, knowledgeable of the issue I was having. I have Zero problems with EA or Origin.

I don't like this. At least not until they fix how patches and DLC are applied. So far I've only bought Dragon Age: Origins off Origin and getting the DLC to work was a pain.

Why?

I mean, I like options too. But this is just... inoffensive. If anything I was happy when Origin was like here you go buddy have a play button! as I'm one of those people that doesn't install desktop shortcuts (I just download everything to my desktop lol).

Yeah, Origin takes ages to start and whatever, but it's not like I'm going to stop eating that chocolate I really like because it has a sh*tty wrapper.

Oh well, what do I know... I guess some people can stick to their principles and have fun not playing great games and stuff... I just wish they'd see this problem ("problem") like I do and enjoy their games and not be bothered by a half-assed piece of software. It's hard being an INFJ.

I do, actually. Which is all the more reason I should have phrased that statement better. What I meant to say was that nothing that comes in from outside of the computer gets to do anything to it without my permission. It doesn't matter if I installed it or not, if I'm not allowed to control what it does, then if I disagree with what it does, it gets wiped out.

So basically cause of your reason to install Origin on PC, you help consoles instead? Tell me, do you have evidence of what Origin does?

"help" ? I don't think of the gaming world as a war between PC and consoles. I think of the existence of both as something that gives gamers more options. Don't like the DRM scheme on the PC version? Buy the console version and you can play the game anyway. Without consoles we have very limited options, buy the game despite our objections to the DRM, or miss out (or pirate it). With consoles, we have acceptable compromises. Consoles are not the enemy. Lazy stupid developers might be, but not the consoles themselves.

Consoles also have DRM, and it does things you can't control, so why the problem with Origin? Everyone was scared of it thinking it was Big Brother....turned out to be just another program for games.

NOOOO. I got my other 2 Mass Effect games on steam. Why not the 3rd one as well. I don't want all of these game clients installed. First it's EA next every major company will want their own download client. Can't there just be one?

Yes, I agree totally with this. I wish all my games were on one client. HECK, I wish clients didn't exist and there wouldn't be this problem.
