I really liked Stealth-19. It still sits in my heart as probably the best flight simulator that I have ever played. But, the best PC game ever made..... Tetris.

Doom 1 may have helped popularize the FPS genre, but it definitely wasn't the first. Â

They could package up (including expansions) X Wing, Tie Fighter, X wing vs Tie Fighter and X wing Alliance, like Westwood did with the Command and Conquer Series.
..oh and Star Wars Lego 1 and 2 are the best kids games ever made! (30+ is still in my childhood years isn't it?)
IMO its Age of Empires (1) cause I played teh mother outta that on LAN with my buds when that was out! When AoE2 came out we all got that so AoE series is the best series ever and AoE1 is the best ever

The very First FPS was Catacomb Abyss, in 1992.
Then Afterwards, there was Wolfenstein 3d, with it's retail version (which was actually some kind of sequel) Spear of Destiny.
And only then, there was doom.
 But to get back to topic:the best game for me would be Ultima 7 (part 1 & 2, with all expansions), back in 1993. But on nearly the same Level, I would say Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind & Fallout 1/2

Otherwise that is a really silly question. If you ask me, there is no such thing as best game ever. There are many great games and then it's all up to what you like.
It is impossible to declare a game, the BEST. Here we are talking about PC games which has over a decade of history. It is not like XBOX 360, just a year old that you can say Gears of War is the best game. During the last decade we have came across a number of really amazing games. There are too many games which are contenders for best game but it is impossible to decide as the list is huge. Command and Conquer, Total Annihilation , Doom, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Diablo, Half Life, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Far Cry, Max Payne, Hitman and their various sequels and spiritual successors . The list goes on and on.
There are so many games that have made a massive impression on me over the years. I do however know for a fact that if i was to play most of them now i would think they were absolute garbage. Doom for example. So i guess i have to choose a game that would still have an affect on me now. Hmmm, well i guess i'd have to say WoW or CoH. Maybe even civilisation 4, or maybe even Empire Earth. Ya know what.. i can't do it lol, way too many.
although not the BEST GAME EVER MADE (afterall how the heck can you judge that - really depends on your genre preference), id say a GREAT game was Broken Sword- the one with the clown. So immersive and a great story.
These games are all classics in my eyes, i spent a loong time playing them, and multiplayer was awesome. Of course there are many many others, but i can't make the list hundreds of games long. Games such as Doom Shadow Warrior, Star Craft.. they are all great games. But the ones i listed started off the genres or were not to long after but included a lot of new features and ideas.Â
Dune 1 easily...Still play it today and the game came out ages ago...To think that so much beauty could fit in a floppy disk...ahhhh...Those were the days...Far better than Dune 2 imho.
Baldur's Gate 2. Only game that keeps growing in popularity from each year to the next. Whichever game company can produce a game like this in a modern platform with updated graphics, but maintain the same fun story and gameplay will be rich forever....
