Bit of a misleading thread title. It won't be here until next year. I am looking forward to it though.

I'm glad the old one is in the background. This looks large and blocky, like it's trying to copy the iWhatever layout and doesn't realize that it looks stupid when blown up to the size of a full computer monitor. The 'personality' of the application? How about functionalityand not looking like crap. I don't use a PC for personality, and with Windows' reputation it's not likely to be used for functionality either. Maybe they can at least get that last one right. >_>

They are coming out with OS's way to fast. Stop being greedy MS. Fix the bugs and problems in the previous OS before you bring out a new one and expect us to pay top dollar for it. What is showed didn't impress me at all. Yeah might be great for a media PC, but it's not going to help me with my games. I also don't have a touch screen and have no interest in ever buying one.

It's blocky on there cause it's meant to run on EVERYTHING like he said.... Laptops, Desktops, Tablets, Handhelds. With a mouse it might seem large and blocky, but for touch it won't be (ever used the HP Touch Screens, you need BIG spaces to touch). Don't you realize everything is going touch?

3 years between 7 and 8 is not too fast. Look on Wikipedia and you'll see that MS have released most of their OS's on a similar cycle.

Is there that many bugs in Win7? Aren't they still releasing updates for XP? or just stopped recently (XP is how old?) They still support old OS.... but the way of the future is touch....so they needed this kind of interface.

There are no bugs (except security fixes and you'll always need security fixes because nothing is 100% safe even if a fix for that problem was just released), but there must be something, how would users complain if there'd be none. Look at how much hate Vista got and how much 7 was ignored and dismissed, yet people "casually" appear using Vista/7 after all that mindless hate and hardware whining (like you'd be able to play games nowadays if your PC wouldn't be able to run Vista/7 with great performance, yet people tried just for the sake of whining).

I still prefer the old windows layout, the new UI just seem's way to basic and simple which is fine for tablets and phones but not for desktops.

I knew it was a wise choice to not buy Windows Vista and Windows 7. Besides, support for Windows XP SP3 doesn't stop till 2014, so I'm still good.

Well I never had Vista but wasn't it hated so much because it was just bloated and too slow?

I'm hoping Windows 8 will change the user interface slightly depending how you interact with it. I really hate using touchscreens, a mouse is much faster and more intuitive. So if you use a mouse they should make all those tabs demonstrated a little smaller.

Vista was something like XP with 7 capabilities. It ran great, even better than XP, but it used quite a lot of RAM and with every patch it became slower and slower and more unstable (exactly like XP, though XP was garbage after two-three months, took Vista one year to reach the same bad state of XP). 7 is perfect, it's as fast as freshly installed Vista, it performs exactly the same after hundreds of updates, it uses 1.5 gigs of RAM less than Vista and stability is rock solid and it enhances certain Vista functions, but people hated it anyway, because it was released too soon after Vista and it was too similar. Even Vista wasn't really as bad as people say.

I hope (although highly doubt) the UI is made easy to modify, 'least remove the damn boarders around the windows, hate the boarder so much! Also I don't like the 1 pixel thick "hidden" taskbar, And it'd be nice to be able to make the background of the windows either transparent, or a different color, I hate white, it's too bright!

Both Vista and Win 7 have had the lifespans typical of a MS OS. XP was weird in that lasted for so long. Typically MS releases a new OS every 2-3 years (see: Windows 9x). XP is obsolete. Vista, Win 7, and Win 8 will likely be supported the way 98, 98SE, and 2000 were.

It'll make manufactures rich! With people trying to play SC2 on a touch screen, that's a hell of a lot of broken displays! Good time to invest in them imo. :D

The interface looks fine for touch devices, but I'm skeptical about its application in a real desktop. I won't throw my stones quite yet, but so far I'm not very impressed.

I'm well aware that support will end soon enough, but I don't expect it to happen at least until the next generation of consoles, so I'm in no hurry to get rid of XP.

Seems like a mistake to me, I don't think the install base for touch screens justifies it for desktops. Maybe they think their standard desktop UI is so solid already, that they don't need to change it? I'm assuming it's still there, that looked like the media center garbage.

Yeah he did switch to the standard UI. To be fair to microsoft the UI in windows 7 is damn near perfect if you ask me. As long as it's still there, and hopefully less resource intensive and more game friendly then I'm sure it will be ok ;)

If the window boarder was removable, the background of the windows able to be either transparent or colored for each different section, the taskbar being actually hidden not 1 pixel and the corner for the top of the window being able to be smooth or sharp. Then it'd be perfect, imo.

I think there's a pattern in the quaility of Windows OSs (the ones for personal use at least) since W98: 98 was ok, ME sucked, XP was cool, Vista was lame, 7 is good. Now IMAO with Windows 8 they should take their time and only do what they can do perfectly, so they won't make the mistake of developing another crappy OS what's fitting in the row perfectly.

Windows 7 is full of thousands of bugs, but most you don't notice or you will never have a problem (yes I know you said there must be some). Vista got so much hate because it wasn't very backward compatible friendly. Plus it is a resource hog. Overall though once they released SP1 and if you don't try and use an older piece of hardware with it and if you have a somewhat decent system (2006 standards) it's not that bad.

I always find it funny how everyone who says something is full of bugs, like Windows 7 can never seem to prove it. Please, post a list of these "thousands" of bugs to enlighten me.

XP SP 3 will be supported until March of 2014.

This really belongs in PC Hardware, as Windows is not a PC/Mac game.

This is how Windows used to be. A new OS every few years. This is nothing new.

By the way, that is a slick interface for touch screen stuff. I can't see it being that easy to use with a mouse though. I'll just stick to the desktop.

Though this makes me want a tablet PC much more...

Also did anybody notice there is still a normal desktop and file system. This new interface is just another way of interacting with the data, yet they kept the old way as well.

People would switch to mouse navigation after about 20 minutes of touch screen on a desktop unless they want a shoulder workout. This is really about ms getting into the tablet arena.

Also did anybody notice there is still a normal desktop and file system. This new interface is just another way of interacting with the data, yet they kept the old way as well.

The old desktop way will never die.

Cranler

People would switch to mouse navigation after about 20 minutes of touch screen on a desktop unless they want a shoulder workout. This is really about ms getting into the tablet arena.

There is nothign wrong with them moving into that market. I think we are going to see a rise in tablet PCs as the iPad's popularity continues to grow but people want more featuers. We haven't had a tablet PC OS designed for mobile use.

I also see this working well with entertainment PCs for music, pictures, and movies. A touchscreen in every room of your house for different things. There is a lot of potential with this new interface.

So... Their update and "awesome" features are all "bling bling" How about making it faster, better, more user friendly? NO i dont care about touch screen. No one serious will care about touch screen... Why? Because moving your fingers around is way to slow. Anyway going by Microsofts history windows 8 will fail \o/ And if you have windows 7 there is no need to get 8... Wait for 9 (unless 9 come with forced GFWL (in that case ignore that one also).

Forced GFWL, you mean already integrated into the Windows? 8 already has that, the "enhanced gaming experience" relies on GFWL and a new mode for games that has it fully integrated.

When I say mode, I mean this touch thing that people are obsessed about....like 8-Bitterness...AKA Media Center and other such things, like this touch environment and gaming environment.

Aha... Well im not that hyped anyway for W8 im even less hyped for it if GFWL is in it. God that application is bad. Also i dont like M$oft's way of handling of it or their "future of gaming" video. Oh well...

Well, it's an evolution of Games Explorer that almost nobody uses, just like Media Center and probably the touch environment (for PCs at least), I mean Media Center is now integrated in the Windows (since Vista), never actually heard about it like in the XP era and it's also there but at the same time pretty hidden, since I don't care about it at all, but they still do it for the few that might actually be interested in them.
