[QUOTE="KalDurenik"]You mean the 1 new feature? That no PC user care about? The general verdict is "its useless for us" here on the forum. Whenever we can turn it on or off dont mater its a pointless thing and people wont stand there and cheer. Also yes its slow and clunky compared to a keyboard / mouse. It looks like he is doing stuff in slow motion compared to M/K.FelipeInside

It's a 5 minute video showing ONE of the new features. Keyword: ONE.

One is also the keyword for the actual video, since it's the first of many as the host said.

So you don't care about it, that automatically makes the entire planet not care about it either? The general verdict here is useless cause most people here are gamers (including me), and they can't see passed their naive gaming minds what posibilities these things bring and that the future is this.

How is it slow and clunky? It's as responsive as the iPhone. And OBVIOUSLY a mouse is going to be quicker than sending your finger across a 40'' screen. Now see if a mouse is quicker on a Windows Phone...

Yes its one... And most people wont care at all. Out of the 1000's of people i have talked to online not a single person use a touch screen on a PC. This topic is about the feature in that movie. Its nothing special for a PC. End of line. Here is a serious question... I know its cool and all when they wave their arms around on touch screens in sci-fi movies and stuff. But... Is it useful? In ANY industry in any work place in ANY school? In any game? Can in out preform a M/K in any of these? No it cant. Im sure its great of a iphone or ipod or whatever. However the only reason why there is a touch screen there... Is because people dont want to carry a M/K around. If you would plug a M/K into a phone it would still be faster. PC's in general are stationary. Laptops will still be faster to use with a M/K. So now do tell me what possibilities a touch screen bring for the feature of a PC.

I don't like how only a select few touchscreens work with Windows 7. I have 4x $500 touchscreen LCD's right here, and I can't even use them...

Ahh, but if you ever used the "lite OS" that the HP Touch Desktops brought you will see that these kind of big chunky boxes are needed....FelipeInside
On touch screens I agree, but on a PC without one? It's not that intuitive imho.

I'm sorry but there's no way you've talked to 1000's of people online and asked every single one of them if they use a touch screen PC. Neither did they all reply no. You're clearly making that up.

It is? Here is a question... Of ALL the people you know irl... Do anyone of them use a touch screen actively? I mean not just to play around because they are bored... On all the work places i have been on... I even asked my friends of their work place if they use or have any of these. I asked people on my msn and in some communities im on... I could count them all but its alot close to 1000 computers (not stone age ones) atleast... yes a handful of them have a screen that allow it but they dont use it. BECAUSE A M/K IS FASTER. I know... Shocking O.o

Looks like a horrible mix of old and new, the UI's are completely different and clash together, nobody cares about being able to snap between stuff unless they're lazy as hell or using a tablet, and it just looks like they stole a ton of stuff off Android and made it bigger. Seriously crap, and the worst thing is they're not just aiming it at touch screen PC's which means that people buying any sort of pre built or laptop are gonna be stuck with this. And if you can change out of that view permanently, what's the freaking point of even having it, nothing else they showed off looked any different to Windows 7, obviously there's bound to be some changes, but why couldn't they have just released this as a patch? Seeming pretty greedy right now, but I'll reserve judgement until they show it off more.

Windows 8 is not built specifically for you and only for you.

I own an HP Touchsmart tm2t, and i can easily see many, many benefits to using Windows 8 and its touch-based UI. I specifically bought this tablet for school so i can write all my notes - even math formulas, graphs, symbols, etc - with a Wacom digitizer pen. Its also a touchscreen which makes it very useful for "pinch-to-zoom" on my notes so i can adjust the size so i can see all my notes at a glance. Rarely, but it happens, that i need to interact with the OS. Its difficult to do certain things when its in tablet mode.

I need to rely on a combination of firefox mods and Rainmeter to create a better touch-based interface so i dont have to break my workflow as much as possible. Combining both a touchbased UI and the traditional UI gives me the best of both worlds - exactly what a convertible tablet PC is supposed to do.

Is it useful? It sure as hell is for me. In any industry? I can easily see it useful in the medical industry. In any work place? Sure. In any school? in MY school for ME it is. Can it outperform M/K? Ever try writing math formulas with just a keyboard and mouse? Good luck!

So now that i've schooled on the benefits of using a touchscreen, i suggest you use one for producitivity before claiming it has none.

If you dont care for the touchbased features then dont use them.

Its that simple. Windows 7 introduces homegroups. I run my own VPN server. I dont complain about homegroups - i just simply dont use it. There are further advances to Windows 8 that im looking forward to beyond the touchscreen stuff, namely the upgraded file system.

Yes i have tried... yes it work even if i had to change some settings to the signs we needed to add them to fast keys. Overall it was faster... For me. In the end overall M/K is faster. But i guess one thing i did not consider is drawing now that you did mention the pen.

To me it just looks like windows 7 with an extra UI to make things simpler for certain people. I dont see whats bad in this...im sure the tiles arent going to affect anything when it comes to gaming.

Obviously you haven't worked in a place where sales/presentations take place in the digital form.... or in a school where touch is gaining more and more ground, or even warehouses where they do stocktake using touch laptops...?

Remember the 2 points I have been saying for the past 8 pages

1- Just because you can't see the use in ur life doesn't make the feature useless

2- I probably won't be using this feature either, I will just turn it off, stop freaking out people

PS: to the person who said Kinect, yes... it would work great.

3 years between 7 and 8 is not too fast. Look on Wikipedia and you'll see that MS have released most of their OS's on a similar cycle.

Pointing to the fact that they have released previous OS's too fast, to prove they don't release OS's too fast.?

There was no need for most of them. 7 is no better than Vista, and the only thing 8 brings to the table is a new UI. These constant releases are flat out stupid.

7 is way better than Vista. The benchmarks agree with my statement. 7 is what Vista should have been. Nonetheless, I still agree that they release way too many operating systems, instead of getting it right the first time.

Because an OS is designed for everybody not just you? I'm sure there will be other useful things, for gamers? what do gamers want? infact what do PC gamers want? the most reluctant group to change in existance. Yes we have it good. but what do you want from Microsoft that wont make you all whine like babies everytime something new from them is announced? Comments like: "Less buggy OS with less resource hog pleaaaase" .... when even the toughest of games dont approach 4GB ram or tax any half decent CPU to this day. They announce that windows 8 will have a new GAMES CENTRE, equip with all the flashy features of XBox and facebook style gaming networking - resulted in "BUH BUH I LOVE THE BLANDNESS OF STEAM" I mean seriously, microsoft cant win with the audience that it spoon feeds ever.FelipeInside

If they expect me to buy it, it should be designed for me, Ive been heavily into computers for 30 years, I should be the first person looking forward to new things. Not sure what games your playing, but My I7 and 4g ram sure struggles in simulations.

I have an xbox 360, the UI in that is terrible, the avatars are terrible, it's made to appeal to chilldren, why would I want that on my computer, If I want that I'll play my xbox. GFWL is a bit clunky sure, but why not fix that instead of trying to turn my computer into an xbox or tablet.

Have you ever used kinect to navigate menus? it's slow, clunky and awkward, it works nothing like minority report I assure you

Because they have small... they're disappointed because Windows 8 isn't what they want it to be, so they gotta let out some frustratiion by talking **** about it.

Looks like it will be great for touchscreen devices like tablets and phones but i will likely stick with the classic windows os interface for my desktop and laptop which will hopefully never be phased out by Microsoft although considering for doing actual work the new ui looks bad for that I don't think they ever will if they do their is always linux. It certainly makes transforming tablet laptops more appealing because you have a 2 interfaces built into the os one designed to work really well with touch input and the other is tried and proven to work well with the mouse and keyboard.

Like I said I have asked microsoft about it, not sure why you claim to know more about windows 8 than they do, you can say it in any language you want, but a statement from microsoft is worth a lot more to me than a rumour from a random person on the internet.

I think its pretty nifty. Being able to combine the Windows 7 desktop and the Windows 8 interface into one touch friendly package. It's not like MS can continue to make purely mouse orientated OSes with some touch features slapped ontop.

[QUOTE="SilverSignal"][QUOTE="Rattlesnake_8"]They are coming out with OS's way to fast. Stop being greedy MS. Fix the bugs and problems in the previous OS before you bring out a new one and expect us to pay top dollar for it.Born_Lucky

No I'm pointing to the fact that Microsoft have released most of their OS's every 3-4 years. So 3 years between 7 and 8 is nothing new as it's no different to previous OS's. Therefore saying it's "too fast" is just nonsense. I bet if you had to wait until 2013 you'd still complain that it was "too slow". There's no pleasing some people.

Bloody Microsoft. We're only now getting over the mess of Vista and enjoying a nice and stable OS with Win 7, and now there bringing out a new one. I know this is the way it works with Microsoft but you think they would have the decency to keep giving there full attention to this current OS for at least another 2 years, as an apology for Vista. As long as they keep supporting Win 7, I won't be changing, no matter how good it is.

It's one of the largest companies in the world, you seriously think they can't design 6 OSs at a time and still focus on support especially for the last OS released? you don't need the most important designers and programmers from MS to fix bugs and security breaches.

W7 is the apology for Vista, it's also just an OS, people have issues if they took almost 3 years to get over an OS that "just used a lot of RAM".

That was a decade ago. With XPs long time line, i, aswell as most people on the planet, thought that M$ has changed from this model of releasing OSs after OSs in short periods of time.

I like how they disabled comments. "Do you have any constructive criticism? Too bad! We know you're gonna hate this and we don't care." Switching from XP to 7 was easy but I won't be upgrading to 8 if they'd rather cater to idiots and grandmas than the educated.

"I can click icons and folders, and put a PC together, I AM TEH EDUCATED!" .... really? more like "Your gonna hate this because they havnt focused on you, someone who likes to complain that Microsoft doesnt innovate yet quite clearly doesnt know what they actually want out of an OS." I will enjoy having my PC, tablet and phone using identical OS' with great support and flashy extra features. ive been doing the whole "XP" style windows for far too long.

I don't understand how this will behave on a desktop pc. Will using a mouse work the same as using your finger with a pad touchscreen? Can I gesture with a mouse (which I can already do in Firefox with an addon).?

You can. But this is specifically designed for touchbased devices. Theres faily little point in using it with just a standard keyboard and mouse setup.

Chances are that it will probably not even be enabled if the computer doesnt detect a touch based device, much like the pen writing and on-screen keyboard don't show up by default if you dont have a touch/pen device on Win XP/Vista/7.

It ain't out yet, right?

Anyways, I heard it's simplified and quite attractive compared to Win 7.

I still prefer the old windows layout, the new UI just seem's way to basic and simple which is fine for tablets and phones but not for desktops.Shadowhawk000
Exactly. This looks nice for tablets but i much rather Win7 interface on my desktop

They knew that the comments would get flooded with the same type of people posting on here. The ones righting it off a year before it comes out.

[QUOTE="kate_jones"]

Have you ever used kinect to navigate menus? it's slow, clunky and awkward, it works nothing like minority report I assure you

kate_jones

You still don't get it do you? YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THAT MENU, just use the normal menu if you want. Do you want me to say it in Spanish as well? ok...

"No tenes que usar ese menu, podes usar el menu clasico si queres"

Chinese? nah, don't know Chinese sorry...

You could ask Bill Gates for all I care....

If you think that that interface cannot be turned off and go back to the normal desktop (WHICH WAS SHOWN ON THE ACTUAL VIDEO) you are very naive...

Greedy and Money Hungry? Welcome to the real world mate... glad you could join us. So what are you going to change to hey? Apple? good luck with games? Linux? good luck there too... They are greedy etc etc but they don't bring out a new OS just because they feel like it... it's to keep up with technology. As for people saying "cry cry why don't they support the current OS" NEWS FLASH: THEY ARE !!!!!!! even XP which is 10+ years old is supported until 2014..... do people even use their brains anymore these days?

lol @ all the Microsoft apologists. The fact of the matter is that this UI is crap for a desktop and touch screens are crap for a desktop. Here is why:

1. You're going to need a mouse and keyboard anyway which makes the touch screen a redundant input device. The appeal of a touch screen on a mobile device comes from not having to carry around a sophisticated input device. Hardly a concern when we are talking about a desktop.

2. Imagine yourself sitting in your office chair with both your arms outstretched towards the screen. Yeah. Physically tiring and uncomfortable.

3. The mouse is a precision device. Large tiles are completely unnecessary and actually make things less efficient with a mouse besides taking up a ton of space. What exactly is wrong with the Windows 7 shell as a default desktop interface? Is it too complicated? No.

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." ~Einstein

5. Managing multiple windows with the metro UI is inefficient. With a taskbar you can easily see every application which is open on your current desktop. You can also launch frequently used application from the taskbar and less frequently used applications from the start menu without having to minimize/return to a tile menu.

I'm sure I could come up with some more reasons but I'm too lazy for now.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Metro will be as out of place on a desktop as Windows 7 shell is on a tablet. The one size fits all approach isn't going to work.

The appeal of a touch screen on a mobile device comes from not having to carry around a sophisticated input device. Hardly a concern when we are talking about a desktop. Desktops are sometimes used as touch devices. A simple example of this is a POS system. Also using desktop as collaborative workplace devices. Again, for the 73rd time, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE IT.... it's there cause as the host said, they won't to be able to use the new Windows on every device. HOW HARD IS IT TO UNDERSTAND THIS????

2. Imagine yourself sitting in your office chair with both your arms outstretched towards the screen. Yeah. Physically tiring and uncomfortable. See point 1.

What exactly is wrong with the Windows 7 shell as a default desktop interface? Is it too complicated? No. No, that's why you can use the normal cla..ssic UI for your BELOVED mouse and the touch menu for....guess what....you GOT IT, TOUCH.

I wasn't saying that we wouldn't be able to use classic. I don't even run Windows as my main OS anyway. I was just pointing out that, in general, a touchscreen UI and touchscreen monitor is rather inferior to what we already have for the desktop. Microsoft is making a senseless decision to force metro upon people until they deactivate it.

The default for a Windows desktop should be Windows 7 shell style, not a touch interface. The touch interface would be available just like Media Center is but not default! They could arrange it so that if a touch screen in detected during setup then the user could set that as default.
