So how does this layout work on a mouse and keyboard interface, and how does it functions without these microsoft applications.

Good for tablets, but I'm not digging it, even with the standard OS stuff working alongside.

skrat_01

Like the guy said, you can use your hand (if touch capable) or just use the mouse (like using the mouse in Media Center instead of the remote control)..... easy.

How does it function WITHOUT these Touch Applications....well, the guy ALSO said that this is the first video of many. We will see the Winows8 behind the Touch on videos to come.

I still don't understand why people have so much of a problem with this. It's an easy, clear crips simple UI for people to use. Yes, us gamers maybe want something more complex, but look at the big picture here and remember Windows isn't just a gaming platform.

Indeed indeed, it's just that those chunky windows aren't ideal for a mouse pointer, they're evidently designed with fingers in mind. I'm expecting more, but Microsoft are really gunning for this to work on a massive variety of platforms, and I honestly don't think their new showcase UI which is similar to their phones, is terribly suitable for a home PC. Heck I say that, and I think the standard desktop does need an overhaul, there's a lot of wasted space on the desktop.

Ugly and just tacky, the last thing i want is to start my PC and have a bunch of apps pop right at my face. MS leave the touch functions and apps for Apple.

1. It's nice to know our normal windows is int he background, but why would a desktop user want this tablet UI running in the forground or at all? Have you ever seen the desktop touch HP computers?

2. Touch is not intended for desktops, using a mouse to select something or an arrow key, is many times faster than holding my arm up and touching or swiping a screen. Depends on what, same as point one...look at the HP Touch Desktops. People use them at home to navigate through notes, weather, photos etc... People use them at work to navigate through timetables, workloads, memos, announcements. Just because YOU won't be using it on ur desktop doesn't mean it hasn't got a use. (think Minority Report)

3. Why do I want tablet features on my desktop, why does a tablet want desktop features.. See points 1+2

4. People still use XP because vista was terrible, w7 is good but good luck getting people to upgrade to a tablet OS Yeah I guess, they had a bad experience with Vista so they think 7 is same.

5. ........

Looks like I get to spend all day removing touch screen services and java to get this running aswell as w7. Seriously who codes a UI in java for a single platform, Java is for multiplatform. Do I really need my UI capable of running on linux? Spend all day removing Touch? You mean with W8? It won't be like that mate...it's just like Media Player, you can just press quit or select to not start with Windows on startup.... easy.

kate_jones

The video said this java UI will always be running.

I have not used a HP computer in a good 10 years, I build my pc's because I only use it for gaming, and being a gaming website I imagine most of have gaming in mind when it comes to windows. Myabe I'm the odd one out, but I prefer linux/osx for everything but gaming. There are a lot of cool things in minority report, animated cereal boxes, jet packs it doesn't mean they will be a part of everyday life.

I realise this OS is going to be nice for casuals who find a mouse a bit confusing but I'm more concerned how this affects gamers, not the grandmother who's trying to learn twitter down the road.

The UI is not Java, its a combination of HTML5 and Javascript. Excellent for those kind of applications. HTML5 is stupidly powerful.

To be honest this looks like the perfect way for them push usability forward. It looks so darn awesome. The desktop is still there and will not be going away so gamers have nothing to worry about. I don't know why everybody is getting so mad.

Ahh, but if you ever used the "lite OS" that the HP Touch Desktops brought you will see that these kind of big chunky boxes are needed....

Yet another "constructive" comment. So people that use Windows but don't know all the ins and outs, or are not gamers automatically makes them DUMB?

Well duh, use Linux or you're a noob. I mean, what's the fun of simply clicking on an .exe when you could go through the trouble of setting up wine/crossover and still get inferior performance?

I knew it was a wise choice to not buy Windows Vista and Windows 7. Besides, support for Windows XP SP3 doesn't stop till 2014, so I'm still good.

sSubZerOo

With this kind of logic its never wise to buy something new, because something newer will come out shortly after.

You didn't really think this out, did you? If XP was obsolete over night, I definitely would have switched over to Windows 7, or maybe even Windows Vista. However, XP is still perfectly fine. The only thing I'm missing out on is DX11 and a few games, which I don't really care for. I don't get new stuff according to everyone elses agenda. I make my own decision. You mad?

No one is forcing you to switch to W7 and obviously you have your reasons. Maybe some software doesnt work on 7? Maybe the PC isn't fast enough for 7? What I wanted to add was that when you DO switch, don't be afraid cause Win7 is better than XP and the best in the desktop OS series. PS: you should really just upgrade for Just Cause 2, it's so much fun :)

The reason they're showing all this touch screen stuff is probably because everything else functions very similarly to Windows 7, hence the reason they're not interested in showing it off because we're already familiar with it.

People need to calm down, do you guys realise how stupid you sound judging an operating system based on a video only a few minutes long?

I see no reason for anyone to be upset about this, since our normal Windows interface and all is still there. But, I really don't care for it other than that. I likely won't be using most of the new features, but I can see where many people would enjoy them.

"Go ahead buddy, say "app" one more time and see what happens.".... that made me giggle.....hahahahah But seriously, it's NOT competing with Apple.... the "dumbing down" is a wrong way to express it. Why do people think that SIMPLIFYING something or making it more AUTOMATED makes it Dumb, or that people that use it are DUMB? So I have this 3 Front Backup System working on one of my client's servers. It's a SIMPLE way to set up the backup, and everything is AUTOMATED. Does that make me dumb?

How in the world is this simplifying? You have to flip through pages and pages of apps/programs to find the right one or you have to do that odd swiping thing from the left to buzz through all the apps that you have open. This just sounds terrible. How about we keep it simple, like it already is. You start your computer and *BAM* every single "app" is right there on one screen. No flipping, No swiping, No pinching. Every time i use my moms iPod Touch i have this exact problem. If i am looking for a specific app she or I has to swipe through pages and pages of junk before i find the correct one.

I watched the video but I didn't notice him saying whether or not we can go back to a normal desktop interface. Can we?

Does windows now have EVERY APP on screen? NO, it does not. You have the start menu, maybe desktop shortcuts or even taskbar shortcuts. YES, you can put EVERY APP as a desktop ICON, but you still will have a screen FULL of icons where you have to look for the one you want.... same case.

If you don't see this as symplyfing then I don't know what else to do. Things like editing a photo will take less clicks/touches than opening Photoshop>opening folder>opening file>searching for correct command/effect etc etc

I just have to shake my head at this.... what do you think? That Windows8 will ONLY come with that first interface?

Yes, every program that i use is on the desktop. Maybe not for you, but not putting them on the desktop doesn't make any sense, thats what it is for. Want to play CSS? Click the icon. Want to open firefox? Guess what, it is on the same exact screen. Click it. By doing all of this they are adding clutter to an already clean interface. I'd rather look at ALL of my programs than just 1/10th and have to scroll through a bunch to find the one i want. Maybe we can put all of our programs on one screen. That would be good!

Anyways, it will be great for touch screen handheld devices. That is why Apple has been doing something similar since the first iPod Touch.

Are you using XP or 7.... the new Win7 is washing away the need to put everything on the desktop. The search bar works instantly. I used to have icons as well, but now I just search for what I want to start (program, software, file) and it takes less than 3 seconds to find it....

I've not used desktop icons since xp, that thing was so ugly I'd kill explorer.exe (even after setting it to the classic theme), got used to typing/browsing with taskmgr.exe, and now adays, you can just pull programs to the taskbar, and use steam to launch games, much cleaner than the messy desktop icons all over the place (which it was annoying as hell to remove that filthy arrow for shortcuts)

I haven't used icons since windows XP, and I got vista day one.

Icons are clutter. They don't give you any information about the program and they just take up space. Space best left for gadgets and stuff that can give you information. These new tiles are much better.

I have a few microsoft people following me on twitter, I asked them if this java UI can be turned off, and had no reply. They normally respond quickly, so either you can't or they don't know the answer either.

Agree with the search thing. Also, if you rely on your desktop for opening all your applications then you need to minimize, or at least resize, any open windows so you can view your desktop, or you could just click the "show desktop" button on Win7, but even then you're still minimizing all your open windows. I only have three icons on my desktop, and now that I think about it I hardly ever use them. This argument is pointless anyway since the new interface wont be forced on you. If someone likes to full their desktop with icons then I don't see any reason why they can't do that on Windows 8.

I have a few microsoft people following me on twitter, I asked them if this java UI can be turned off, and had no reply. They normally respond quickly, so either you can't or they don't know the answer either.

kate_jones

I'm 100% you can, it would be stupid not to.

You think people with Microsoft Exchange and the like are going to use that menu???

If you watch the video he even MINIMIZES this new menu and goes back to his normal desktop.

yes but in the video he specifically says it's always running, and shows it share the screen with the classic view. So for now your just assuming it's possible to turn it off.

I just shot another microsoft guy a tweet hoepfully one of them knows.

I'm not a fan of touch because of the smudge marks it leaves. Looks like I maybe skipping 8 if they push this touch crap too much.

I'm a stickler for cleanliness, as well. Human fingers always have oils on them that leave smudges, regardless of how often you wash them. I don't have a need for this touch screen stuff. I'll be fine with Windows 8 as long as I can completely disable the option and it doesn't take up additional ram.

I'm sure he understands that, but why do we want to pay for features we wont use.

What will be new in windows 8 that will of use to me, will they finally fix the file search and make it instant like on osx, will I still have to run anti virus, will windows movie maker have slow motion and other effects. will there be some sort of music program or photo software, will there be a safe place to directly download approved apps, will games run faster, will it use less install space, less ram.

this is the stuff I want to know, not how well it's going to run on a tablet.

It's good of you to try and talk some sense into the fools that are righting this off a YEAR before it gets released, but I think you're wasting your time. Once they hate something, nothing will change that view. Chances are they'll end up buying it anyway. They probably all hated Windows 7 a year before it came out.

this is the stuff I want to know, not how well it's going to run on a tablet.

I guess I DO have to explain everything....*sigh*

Here we go, stick with me on this one:

"but why do we want to pay for features we wont use": news flash dude, you are paying for features you don't use ALREADY on every single OS you have bought in your life. Just because YOU don't use it doesn't mean another person won't.

"will they finally fix the file search and make it instant like on osx": maybe something wrong with ur PC, my search is instant.

"will I still have to run anti virus": that's your choice but the safe answer is yes. And also YES that MAC has viruses/spyware and running Antivirus on a MAC will also become common in the future. Plus on top of that, what's the big deal? there are really good FREE AViruses out there these days.

"will windows movie maker have slow motion and other effects": this is an OS with BASIC Tools. Keyword here is BASIC. If you want a super movie editing suite buy Sony Vegas.

"will there be some sort of music program or photo software": photo software and music software has been available for Windows since XP

"will there be a safe place to directly download approved apps": already is for mobile, coming soon to desktop. So basically you just want MS to copy MAC. Are you a MAC fanboy? cause you sound like one.

"will games run faster": games run faster on 7 than XP now.

"will it use less install space, less ram.": get with the times, everything gets upgraded...specially in computer world. You want MORE BETTER features but at the same time LESS Space and LESS RAM? it's like going to the shopping center and trying to fit 200 oranges in a basket that only fits 10...

"this is the stuff I want to know, not how well it's going to run on a tablet." It's the FIRST video of more to come.... be patient for Christ's Sake...

Thanks man. I made this topic so it would turn out into a discussion about the new features. What was right and cool, what looked wrong, what direction MS could take. But no.... everybody went physcho and called it the next Devil Software for some reason...

You mean the 1 new feature? That no PC user care about? The general verdict is "its useless for us" here on the forum. Whenever we can turn it on or off dont mater its a pointless thing and people wont stand there and cheer. Also yes its slow and clunky compared to a keyboard / mouse. It looks like he is doing stuff in slow motion compared to M/K.

It's a 5 minute video showing ONE of the new features. Keyword: ONE.

One is also the keyword for the actual video, since it's the first of many as the host said.

So you don't care about it, that automatically makes the entire planet not care about it either? The general verdict here is useless cause most people here are gamers (including me), and they can't see passed their naive gaming minds what posibilities these things bring and that the future is this.

How is it slow and clunky? It's as responsive as the iPhone. And OBVIOUSLY a mouse is going to be quicker than sending your finger across a 40'' screen. Now see if a mouse is quicker on a Windows Phone...

[QUOTE="Inconsistancy"][QUOTE="Birdy09"][QUOTE="sexygirl6t9"]no one is forcing you to buy this crappy OS. Felipe just thinks everything new will be good. Windows XP is still perfect for so many people. I only tried Windows 7 because I was reformatting and I didn't look back after that. XP and 7 are still great. No reason to upgrade to this piece.

A OS with more options is crappy? ok. and pigs fly, windows xp is the prettiest non-outta date OS out there...

Woah, XP is the ugliest thing since... well, xp. Nothing uglier, everything before it was okay, everything after it was okay, that thing was just some ugly light blue fisher price garbage.

Im thinking you missed the sarcasm :P

With this kind of logic its never wise to buy something new, because something newer will come out shortly after.

FelipeInside

I never claimed it wasn't better. Plus, I have Windows 7 on one of my laptops. It's a good OS, but I'm not going to upgrade my desktop to it, since XP already does everything I want it to do. And I don't like Just Cause 2. I've played it on the PS3.

Because an OS is designed for everybody not just you? I'm sure there will be other useful things, for gamers? what do gamers want? infact what do PC gamers want? the most reluctant group to change in existance. Yes we have it good. but what do you want from Microsoft that wont make you all whine like babies everytime something new from them is announced? Comments like: "Less buggy OS with less resource hog pleaaaase" .... when even the toughest of games dont approach 4GB ram or tax any half decent CPU to this day. They announce that windows 8 will have a new GAMES CENTRE, equip with all the flashy features of XBox and facebook style gaming networking - resulted in "BUH BUH I LOVE THE BLANDNESS OF STEAM" I mean seriously, microsoft cant win with the audience that it spoon feeds ever.

Meh, I'm waiting for a fully rendered 3D city (as an interface) to wonder around in to browse my folders and files. And I'll also want to interact and chat with other people online in these "virtual cities" of course :)

Oooh, that would be pretty nifty(although 100% novelty that I'd disable in a week), would love some native support for a 3d background or video, but there's no way in hell MS is ever gonna make their UI really open and fun/easy to play with :( 'least I don't see it happening.
