Ok i used to play Socom for PSP with a few friends. I recently added a friend to my friend list. I saw him online for the first and he is playing COD 4 which i dont own for the PS3. I cant invite him to a chat, he wont get my messages in game, and i cant invite him to resistence game. I got my PS3 a few days ago. Am i doing something wrong or is this what we get for it being free?RyanShazam
First off, I would be very angry if someone sent me a message while I was in game. Second, I wouldnt pay for a "better" online service. I am more than happy with the current service.
I have a 360 and rarely play it because I dont want to pay for online. The free online is one of the seeling points of the PS3. It was for me and has been for others.
No need to complain about something you dont have to use or pay for.
I already pay for a better online service, I think the PSN is fine how it is but it doesn't compare to xbl and I really dont want to have to pay for both online consoles

I'd like to think we are more intelligent, seeing how online is free on PC, free on PS3, why would I pay to play on the 360? It doesnt make any sense does it?
$50 to play a game online? You paid $60 for the game there is no sense in paying for a feature like online play.
The PS3 servers are generally lag free and a lot of fun, not filled with foul language and microphone heros who's foul mouths are enough to keep me from paying the extra $50.

I know a couple of 360 owners who wont pay for live. They keep getting the free trial (48 hours or soemthign) and just renew a new one when it runs out (not sure how it works) but thats pertty sad

Actually in terms of online gaming there are no big differences. Paying is kinda stupid when you can do it free. PC has always been free, if you bend yourself and let somebody charge you for something thats always been free, what will stop them from doing it for more stuff?
PSO service is not that far away from what you get in XBL. And its nothing that cant be solved by a future FW.
PSN is already a pretty fantastic On-line system.
Unless they add a ridiculous amount of features, I will never pay for On-line play on the PS3.

The functionality offering on XboxLive could be described as "standard". Being able to send messages for instance. Since it should not cost the company alot to maintain it. Things like arcade or other game downloads I can understand. Thats content. Its EXTRA. So paying for XboxLive for getting standard functionality AND ADVERTISING, is like paying the car wash to enable me to wash my own car.

there is a couple car washes like that. they supply the sope and a hose and what not, its a lot cheaper than a regular car wash i think, and you dont have to mess with the clean up. lOL
both good and bad points here.
They are right why should we pay for something that has always been free. M$ started making us pay for online. After getting the 360 and Halo 3 and a one year subscription card. I realize it kinda sucks. Since next gen gaming sucks in general. I realized PS3 is offering alot more things that will appeal to me once 2008 till then my PS3 is still sitting on the floor somewhere collecting dust. I will make a effort to find it next year. But for now its all been SNES and N64 for me :3 So basically I wasted about $50 on a card that I have only used for about 2 weeks after activting it almost 2 months ago.
Now if I was just playing the PS3 I wouldn't have to worry about a online fee and wasting away time I am not using. Sure I can't do all the fancy crap like I could on XBL but if you notice Sony has slowly been working up to it. Sure the PS3 online will suck for half this current gen but at least the PS4 will already be on par with online gaming like XBL is. But only free(hopefully still).
But then again when you look at pc gaming and how it is free. You can't really invite other people to join in the game your on or connect to another friends gaming session, unless if its on steam of course since I haven't noticed any other programs that seem similar to XBL.
So it depends if you think paying that extra bit of cash is worth a couple gaming features or not. Till then we can wait and hope that Sony doesn't go down the path of M$ and force us to pay to play online. Unless its a MMO of course.

what you don't think the ps3 online can duel with xbl this gen? ps4? all i have to say is lol. oh and dear ol' MS now introduced xbl to many pc games, so pc is no longer free (not all games but many)
both good and bad points here.

Points taken. Something else popped up. Arent all online matches on PSN running on dedicated Sony PS3s? I think I heard that in the Hotspot thing. That Sony has a room filled with PS3s running, to make sure we get the best online experience. And XBL is all client based, which means you have to depend on homie to use his XBox to run an online match right? And THAT isnt free?
[QUOTE="jtdawg23"]I wouldn't. I think it is fine right now. All we need is in-game XMBjwat4
Im really curious to know what you all feel in-game XMB will give you? Im just trying to understand why that such an important feature...?
being able to play your music ingame...add friends ingame, jus view and manage your files in game, makes the experience better[QUOTE="jtdawg23"]I wouldn't. I think it is fine right now. All we need is in-game XMBjwat4

In-game messaging.

Agreed. PSN is fine as its is (to me atleast) and if they upgrade it, all the better.:D[QUOTE="jwat4"][QUOTE="jtdawg23"]I wouldn't. I think it is fine right now. All we need is in-game XMByungswift44

Messaging, or music might be nice, but, I dont want a messages popping up while Im playing a game...
I do think you could have music without in game XMB, perhaps in a media player style form.
The main advantage of live over the PSN is that developers don't have to pay to have an online service in their game where as they on the PSN. This is why we see some PS3 games without online play whereas the 360 version has it. Yes, I would pay for a better online service. I can't believe sony fanboys moan about $50 so much, be lucky that is all YOU have to pay for it. In Australia it is more like 4100 which is a joke.austin_is_god
Oddly enough we are not lucky, we are smart enough to know better. We choose to use a free service that is just fine instead of paying $50 USD or $4100 AUD
good things come to those who wait.
i would rather wait for better features than pay for better features.
Well I have both the PS3 and the 360. I pay for the XBL service but I would stop paying all together if PSN started to charge too. I hear both sides of the argument but right now the PS3 needs to come out with more games and features for the PSN service. I know it will just be a matter of time until the PSN crushes the XBL and when that happen XBL will become free also
Online service for a gaming console should never cost money, I mean you're already paying for the internet service. And anyway that's the only (but very important) thing that thePSN is missing and we may get an in-game accessible XMB in an update or we will for sure have that when Home comes out in a couple months. Home is free.
PSN is also better than XBL in some way like how it has dedicated servers (warhawk), no size limit for downloadable games so you can download full games like Warhawk and Socom and you can download user-created themes.
Like most people have said, why should you pay to play a game online. Your required to have at least Cable/DSl ISP to play, thats already between 35-50 clams a month. See stuff like WoW and XBL are jsut dumb. XBl, yes it may be better, or so they say, but it's been around for so long, and you always had to pay for it, even when it was crappy. PSN is new, you gotta give it time to catch up. Right now I think it's fine, and the only thing I can think of is better Community options(such as Easier ways to send friend requests, better invite system). Plus they have an in-game xmb in the works, and PS3 owners know it's coming as the inclusion of Home is one thing that will definately make the community better, and you know what's great about it...it's free.
PSN is free because it does noy offer much, there is no way Sony could have charged for what they are offering, i dont think it is some great gesture on the part of Sony not to charge for the service, thay just know it is so limited that they could not.
The good thing is that when they do eventually catch up witha service as good as XBL they are commited to a free service.
I have to say if they offered a free service like thay have now or one like XBL that you have to pay for I would gladly pay for it.
I have been on XBL for years and I play online all the time so it is not an issue to pay for something you use a lot.
I think the lack of a decent online service on the PS2 has not given many Sony fans the chance to really try a good online service and as many have gone straight from PS2 to PS3 thay do not know what to expect or what the possabilites are.
I am sure Sony will catch up, just because Ford invented the Motor car did not mean anybody else was never going to make a better one.
I do love my PS3 butthe onlinepart is lacking at the moment but I think Home is a step in the right direction and may well give Microsoft a huge kick up the ass.
