I think cancel culture has definitely become part of a fascist-esque movement to demonize and silence right-wing and even fence-sitting voices. Whenever I talk to the people in favor of it, they seem mentally unstable and unable to process my (personally I think they're reasonable) thoughts and feelings in a civil manner without smashing the block button. It's like an entire movement desperately yelling "It's my way or the highway."
I was also a bit sad that gamespot allowed Mason Downey's article to lack a comment section when she could just not look at it. That seems rather antisocial to me, especially when most other articles here offer comment sections.
I honestly respect gamespot a bit for having a fully fleshed out comment and forum system, but this is unfortunate in my view. I was honestly pretty excited to get down and dirty with the free expression of ideas.

Wait...how old are you? Were you around in the 80's? You want to talk about cancel culture? The Church folk were sure on a roll then. Everything got banned. Huckleberry Finn, 1984, Slayer...
If we're talking about cancel culture as in making THOSE folks shut up, then YAHAHAHAHAHHA FUYCKRS.

I think he's talking about currently. Yes there was a time when the right was obnoxious on this issue. I remember them not wanting kids to watch Harry Potter because it could lead to Witchcraft.
However that time is over. The left has complete power over the entertainment industry. You either agree with them or you are silenced. You are either for it or against it and I notice many on the left are for it as long as it benefits them.

What makes you think you are above them to think that you are right and they are wrong so their opinion must be silenced the same way they wanted yours silenced?
You are just being the other side of the same coin.
Now she's free to work on Ben Shapiros next big project, which I'm sure will fully support and embrace people of all creeds and races, even - how he calls them? - libtards.
People need to grow up, everyone is free to work with whoever they want and if you go publicly making abject statements that go against the interests of your employer you'll probably lose your job. Social media is part of your public profile as a celebrity, you should never be legally punished for your speech but you can't expect that everyone will enable you. Specifically, a lot of Jewish money goes into Hollywood, and you go out to say that people engaging negatively with you online is just like the holocaust... get fucked. And when Disney gets a call from whoever investor saying that as someone who lost family in the holocaust they are cutting the funds, Disney will take the side of a spoiled rich and mediocre actress and risk hundreds of jobs because she feels like she can say whatever she wants and everyone has to either support her or enable her? Plus Disney has its own issues regarding anti-Semitism, that's the last thing they want to have to deal with.
Are we talking about legislation being introduced because of cancel culture or are we talking about people wanting absolutely no accountability for what they say when socially engaging with their following? Personally, people are free to be anti Harry Potter, it's part of their free speech, unless they wish to get government to enforce their opinions.
And Gamespot should be absolutely free to decide if they want to leave their comment sections open or not. Or are we now entitled to a point that a private gaming website is forced to be a speech platform? Have you read most comment sections? Remember when the Cyberpunk review came and everyone had a meltdown and decided to personally attack the reviewer and then she was actually on point for most of it? Even if she wasn't, why would a company be forced to give voice to people personally attacking one of their employees?
And are we ignoring that pos like TheQuartering make a living of rallying their base to harass their targets while saying they have no power over them? Want to talk about cancel culture, lets talk how every time an actor of the "wrong" colour is casted, or some "wrong" political view is expressed in a game the alt right completely forgets about their reservations about "cancel culture" while fully engaging in cancel culture? The "problem" is that many of the issues neckbeards have are so laughable that they achieved nothing, they have no real impact near the general public or the money people, so they cry for unfair treatment.
I honestly don't think this is a left problem, I see it everywhere left, righ and center. Because social media discourse made us incredibly polarised. In all subjects.
What makes you think you are above them to think that you are right and they are wrong so their opinion must be silenced the same way they wanted yours silenced?
You are just being the other side of the same coin.
Search about horseshoe theory.
Oh, I think its perfect irony. These people are whining about exactly the same thing they did when they were in charge. Horseshoe theory, indeed.
Well, yeah. That is part of the issue, the lack of tolerance.
Its a tricky matter, with people of different opinions the ideal aspect would be for them to recognize the other person perspective and understand its points instead of removing them or change them. I cant say you are wrong, I am right, I would be falling into that irony you speak off. You seem to accept that stance as long as you are on the winning side, if not in that side you will fight to win again.
I think its hard to make a person agree with your points if you dont share your perspective or they dont care for it, your points will be met with a lot of resistance.
There is this KKK story with Daryl Davis, a black musician, its very interesting as it has him going to KKK meetings and talking with the big guys there, not with the intention of converting but to understand their views and share his.
@wilddog73: Cancel culture is capitalism applied to politics. It’s genius. Millenials figured out something my generation never did, that money makes change, not votes.
First off, it's wrong to have an opinion piece and not allow other opinions.
Second, I don't think Carano is anti-Semitic. Making a comparison to Jews during WWII is a lot of things--stupid, ignorant, insensitive, and more--but it is not anti-Semitic. Issue here for me, similar to mrbojangles above, is that the front-page has devolved into self-indulgent Kotaku blog material and political slants with a shoot and run mentality because they know half the community will have their own opinion they won't like. Notice as well the ratio of likes on these shut down articles is highly suspect. Wouldn't be surprised if they were manipulating it.
You really shouldn't be forced to come here to voice your opinion because the author/s are insecure, but secure enough to put it out their own opinion, which is right, because of course.
As for Gina Carano, yea, kind of think she did. Disneys China hypocrisy not withstanding, it's a family company and by default your image is expected to reflect that.
Her posts were becoming increasingly unhinged. A bit like Gamespots frontpage.
I disagree as well, but I do not do so respectfully. Gamespot are cowards for not opening comments on that editorial because they know they would get figuratively roasted alive for that snowflake nonsense.

I think it's more the case that people are clicking the up-vote button by mistake thinking they are opening the comment section. That's what happened to me. I couldn't figure out why comments weren't opening until I looked more closely and internally face palmed when I realized that I had just given the editorial a thumbs up with no way to retract it.
@br0kenrabbit: The Satanic Panic was lead by Tipper Gore (yes, the ex-wife of Al Gore whom he divorced while she was fighting cancer) and the infamous DC-swamp organization, the PMRC.
The PMRC had a few token RINOs, but was largely dominated by hive-minded libtards.

I agree, but just for the sake of discussion....should they have to learn? Can't we just recognize people as idiots without cancelling them? I really don't give two shits about Carano's political and social opinions, but I thought she was a fun actor to watch in The Mandalorian.
In that article I linked, the author essentially said that by discussing issues like this, we play into their hands (I object to that on 1st Amendment grounds immediately, but whatever). That could not be more wrong: by cancelling people, we play into their hands. The far right has made an art out of playing the victim, and every time you cancel one of them you make 1,000 more of them.
This guy wrote this article and I wanted to cancel my account because I felt silenced, and in a hostile way. I felt sympathy for Carano because even idiots need to make a living. I felt bad for myself because I love The Mandalorian and Carano was a really great part of that show; she can't really act that well, but she is entertaining and adds a bit of kitsch and B-movie goodness to it.
Let them act as fools. Let them offend. The best thing we can do right now is be tolerant of these people and let them run their mouths. Who knows? Maybe Carano would have made an idiot of herself today...maybe in a month she would have admitted to actually being a white supremacist? It's a win-win for progress in either case because you either don't make an issue for it, or you let them entrap themselves.
But now that she has been cancelled, she has a platform, she has a support network...she is entrenched, emboldened, and is going to be even harder to handle.
Certain articles posted here on GS attracts all kind moddable and bannable comments. That’s why they do not have a comment section or the section get closed.
Conservatives need to stop acting like 'cancel culture' is a bad thing. No company or person is entitled to my money or how I spend it. The same applies to everyone. They should be backing it as a pillar of the free market working as expected. I guess it's just another example of their hypocrisy when espousing 'free market' policies. Gina, and plenty other of conservatives, are finding that there are consequences to their actions and statements.
With that being said, I think opinion articles should have comments on to start. Just moderate them if it gets ugly, and close it down if it gets much worse. I think they basically preempted it since it would have been flooded with trolls and sh*t comments.

Yea let's have a true free market. You don't want gay's in your restaurant? Don't let them in. Don't like people of color? Why hire them?
I love how the left looks at statistics and calls "RACISM " everytime something doesn't fit their narrative and constantly accuse people of bias then outright fires someone for their political beliefs. Keep in mind this is the same company that hired James Gunn who made child pedophile jokes. A bit concerning considering Disney is primarily a children's company.
What's ironic about all this is Gina's character was created to pander to a group that actually ended up hating her because those same fans are so obsessed with your ability to constantly be progressive.
Not sure how many billions Disney needs to continue to lose before they figure this out. You lost half your audience by the end of the new star wars trilogy. It may be time to listen to actual fans.
@wilddog73: Cancel culture is capitalism applied to politics. It’s genius. Millenials figured out something my generation never did, that money makes change, not votes.
You’re just mad you’re on the losing side.
Your generation didn't figure it out. Social media didn't exist before so only those who called/mailed had their voice heard and most people didn't take the time to do that. Now anyone can go on twitter and hashtag. It just got easier. That said I don't like cancel culture. If someone offends you then don't buy the product. I actually hate to see people losing work and in some cases it's from years long past. It's like we don't believe in second chances.
Anyway I haven't been paying attention to what she said but companies have the right to fire people.
Regarding removal of possibility to comment, I guess they simply did not want any flame wars (I mean, go check facebook page, it has it (flame wars that is)).
Regarding censoring I'm kinda for it when it reaches a certain limit. In my opinion, Carano's post (at least the latest from what I've heard and read that was still available) was just stupid for lack of a better word or poorly worded, but she also posted some other stuff. However, I cannot abide hypocrisy as well, looking at you, Disney and thanking China's Uyghur labour camps in one of your movies.
Anyways, since I have no stake in this at all (I'm neither Carano's defence attorney, nor belong to her trade union, if she even is a member of one), I'm gonna say this - if you persist on ignoring your employer's instructions, of course you will be fired (contract not renewed). Some people don't even get the luxury of being warned a couple of times (God knows that there are numerous cases in courts regarding this, at least in my country). I just find it funny that people cause so much uproar for a famous person (who, BTW, compared to average Joe, will not even feel economic disadvantages of being fired), as if, cynical thought, she's going to get down on her knees and start sucking her defenders off out of sheer gratitude.
@silentchief: Disney did fire James Gunn. It's the reason he had time to make a Suicide Squad movie for WB.
But James Gunn made a point of publicly explaining himself and apologizing for it. That is why Disney turned around and rehired him.
People need to recognize how far public apology can go. I honestly believe Louie CK would have all his old shows back if he had stuck to his original apology, and not tried to come back too soon with school shooting jokes.

@comp_atkins: Seriously, the Holocaust comparisons are just asking for trouble. Republican actors need to start comparing themselves to communists getting blacklisted from Hollywood in the 50's as it is a much more analogous situation. Though the idea of having something in common with commies probably gives them hives.

I think they like to compare themselves to Jews because they genuinely feel their victimhood is as severe as genocide. I think they honestly believe their way of life is being threatened and, in some of their minds, they think Democrats are literally rounding up kids and killing them or something.
@gns: If Disney wants to be hypocritical, they can be when it’s concerning their bottom line. Disney overlooks things in China in order to make money. They didn’t overlook Ginas comments because it cost them money.
To be clear, that is the primary goal of a profit seeking company. Disney doesn’t exist to make China a happier place for China’s citizens. They exist to make their shareholders money.
I have no idea why people look to companies to be some sort of beacon of moral change in the world.
The problem, like 99% of the articles about the matter is that its filled with outright LIES and nobody is even pretending anymore.
"blatant anti-semitism"? there was not a single bit of anti-semitism in the post. Comparing people you don't like to Nazis has been done by both sides of every argument since WW2. Every time its done, the Nazis are portrayed as THE BAD SIDE. That is the opposite of anti-semitism. And as numerous people have pointed out, Pedro Pascal himself has done it!!!
"abhorrent public behavior and then crocodile tears and feigned ignorance has become an entire "brand" for many people on social media" - yeah but which side started that??? As a life-long New Yorker who has always been considered super liberal, im now considered one step short of far-right. that flipped in the last 5 years.
"This particular style of engagement relies on the tried-and-true bad faith argument wherein a case is made full of blatant and obvious falsehoods and misrepresented facts, dressed up in such a way to bait arguments from people who spot the issues and try to push back against them. The argument then serves as a social megaphone, boosting the falsehoods and deliberately misrepresented facts to bigger and broader audiences, stripping them of context, creating straw men for others to argue against that derail the issue even further." Yup- this is EXACTLY what you're doing Mason and Gamespot. Exactly what YOU'RE doing. You misrepresent the facts, and then you vilify and dehumanize people who disagree with you.
People also say that Disney is just doing this for "the bottom line" and that Carano is bad for business. I have no stats to back this up but I would bet money right now, that more people canceled their Disney+ after news of her release than after all of her "controversial" tweets combined.
But you are right about one thing Mason, and Gamespot, cancel culture doesn't exist. So when I stop using Gamespot completely for posting this vile article, and when I make sure that ANY website Mason posts for is added to the "do not give any views" you won't be able to cry about cancel culture, will you?
You and your allies are the ones who tries to turn disagreements into war. Its a war you WILL lose because people have barely started fighting against you.
@Baconstrip78: I guess some people are just too invested, and when they see that their perceived image of something was just shattered, they go: "Woah, woah, woah, wait a minute!"

Did you actually read her comment? The only thing she was comparing was how the Nazi's got Jews to turn on each other. She was comparing that to how the MSM is turning on conservatives and causing division in our country. She wasn't saying conservatives were being rounded up and put in concentration camps. I swear the left has such a severe case of tunnel vision they can't wait to make everything about them.

What? Minimum wage and labor unions don't get your money. And you pay for socialist policies already. Education, military, infrastructure, agriculture, the list goes on. Buy you also benefit from those programs. Successful countries have a mix of capitalism and socialism. Unfettered capitalism leads to the wealthy being held by the top while everyone else struggles to succeed.

@stevelabny: Bye Karen. Disney made a decision that would cost them the least money possible. They are already counting on people like you leaving. It’s the same calculation the NFL made in apologizing to kaepernick. It’s lose lose. Lose little (you), or lose big (Millenials).
You don’t matter. Companies know catering to you and the anti-SJW edgelord crowd is not feasible because you get offended by NOT being able to shit on and troll people.
