I respectfully disagree with Mason Downey's Gina Carano Article and it's lack of a comment section.

I think cancel culture has definitely become part of a fascist-esque movement to demonize and silence right-wing and even fence-sitting voices. Whenever I talk to the people in favor of it, they seem mentally unstable and unable to process my (personally I think they're reasonable) thoughts and feelings in a civil manner without smashing the block button. It's like an entire movement desperately yelling "It's my way or the highway."

I was also a bit sad that gamespot allowed Mason Downey's article to lack a comment section when she could just not look at it. That seems rather antisocial to me, especially when most other articles here offer comment sections.

I honestly respect gamespot a bit for having a fully fleshed out comment and forum system, but this is unfortunate in my view. I was honestly pretty excited to get down and dirty with the free expression of ideas.

They also lacked comments on CDPR mass refunds too. They are paid clearly.

People need to grow up, everyone is free to work with whoever they want and if you go publicly making abject statements that go against the interests of your employer you'll probably lose your job. Social media is part of your public profile as a celebrity, you should never be legally punished for your speech but you can't expect that everyone will enable you. Specifically, a lot of Jewish money goes into Hollywood, and you go out to say that people engaging negatively with you online is just like the holocaust... get fucked. And when Disney gets a call from whoever investor saying that as someone who lost family in the holocaust they are cutting the funds, Disney will take the side of a spoiled rich and mediocre actress and risk hundreds of jobs because she feels like she can say whatever she wants and everyone has to either support her or enable her? Plus Disney has its own issues regarding anti-Semitism, that's the last thing they want to have to deal with.

Are we talking about legislation being introduced because of cancel culture or are we talking about people wanting absolutely no accountability for what they say when socially engaging with their following? Personally, people are free to be anti Harry Potter, it's part of their free speech, unless they wish to get government to enforce their opinions.

And Gamespot should be absolutely free to decide if they want to leave their comment sections open or not. Or are we now entitled to a point that a private gaming website is forced to be a speech platform? Have you read most comment sections? Remember when the Cyberpunk review came and everyone had a meltdown and decided to personally attack the reviewer and then she was actually on point for most of it? Even if she wasn't, why would a company be forced to give voice to people personally attacking one of their employees?

And are we ignoring that pos like TheQuartering make a living of rallying their base to harass their targets while saying they have no power over them? Want to talk about cancel culture, lets talk how every time an actor of the "wrong" colour is casted, or some "wrong" political view is expressed in a game the alt right completely forgets about their reservations about "cancel culture" while fully engaging in cancel culture? The "problem" is that many of the issues neckbeards have are so laughable that they achieved nothing, they have no real impact near the general public or the money people, so they cry for unfair treatment.

I honestly don't think this is a left problem, I see it everywhere left, righ and center. Because social media discourse made us incredibly polarised. In all subjects.

First off, it's wrong to have an opinion piece and not allow other opinions.

Second, I don't think Carano is anti-Semitic. Making a comparison to Jews during WWII is a lot of things--stupid, ignorant, insensitive, and more--but it is not anti-Semitic. You're not a bigot simply because you make a comparison between one demographic you think are being persecuted to another demographic that was actually persecuted.

I disagree as well, but I do not do so respectfully. Gamespot are cowards for not opening comments on that editorial because they know they would get figuratively roasted alive for that snowflake nonsense.

I think it's more the case that people are clicking the up-vote button by mistake thinking they are opening the comment section. That's what happened to me. I couldn't figure out why comments weren't opening until I looked more closely and internally face palmed when I realized that I had just given the editorial a thumbs up with no way to retract it.

In that article I linked, the author essentially said that by discussing issues like this, we play into their hands (I object to that on 1st Amendment grounds immediately, but whatever). That could not be more wrong: by cancelling people, we play into their hands. The far right has made an art out of playing the victim, and every time you cancel one of them you make 1,000 more of them.

This guy wrote this article and I wanted to cancel my account because I felt silenced, and in a hostile way. I felt sympathy for Carano because even idiots need to make a living. I felt bad for myself because I love The Mandalorian and Carano was a really great part of that show; she can't really act that well, but she is entertaining and adds a bit of kitsch and B-movie goodness to it.

Let them act as fools. Let them offend. The best thing we can do right now is be tolerant of these people and let them run their mouths. Who knows? Maybe Carano would have made an idiot of herself today...maybe in a month she would have admitted to actually being a white supremacist? It's a win-win for progress in either case because you either don't make an issue for it, or you let them entrap themselves.

Conservatives need to stop acting like 'cancel culture' is a bad thing. No company or person is entitled to my money or how I spend it. The same applies to everyone. They should be backing it as a pillar of the free market working as expected. I guess it's just another example of their hypocrisy when espousing 'free market' policies. Gina, and plenty other of conservatives, are finding that there are consequences to their actions and statements.

With that being said, I think opinion articles should have comments on to start. Just moderate them if it gets ugly, and close it down if it gets much worse. I think they basically preempted it since it would have been flooded with trolls and sh*t comments.

Your generation didn't figure it out. Social media didn't exist before so only those who called/mailed had their voice heard and most people didn't take the time to do that. In my opinion, Carano's post (at least the latest from what I've heard and read that was still available) was just stupid for lack of a better word or poorly worded, but she also posted some other stuff. Anyways, since I have no stake in this at all (I'm neither Carano's defence attorney, nor belong to her trade union, if she even is a member of one), I'm gonna say this - if you persist on ignoring your employer's instructions, of course you will be fired (contract not renewed). Some people don't even get the luxury of being warned a couple of times (God knows that there are numerous cases in courts regarding this, at least in my country).
