I respectfully disagree with Mason Downey's Gina Carano Article and it's lack of a comment section.

This topic is locked from further discussion.

Conservatives need to stop acting like 'cancel culture' is a bad thing. No company or person is entitled to my money or how I spend it. The same applies to everyone. They should be backing it as a pillar of the free market working as expected. I guess it's just another example of their hypocrisy when espousing 'free market' policies. Gina, and plenty other of conservatives, are finding that there are consequences to their actions and statements.

With that being said, I think opinion articles should have comments on to start. Just moderate them if it gets ugly, and close it down if it gets much worse. I think they basically preempted it since it would have been flooded with trolls and sh*t comments.

Yea let's have a true free market. You don't want gay's in your restaurant? Don't let them in. Don't like people of color? Why hire them?

I love how the left looks at statistics and calls "RACISM " everytime something doesn't fit their narrative and constantly accuse people of bias then outright fires someone for their political beliefs. Keep in mind this is the same company that hired James Gunn who made child pedophile jokes. A bit concerning considering Disney is primarily a children's company.

I think describing her tweets as "her political beliefs" waters down what she said. Let's not act like she got fired due to her beliefs in lower taxes and a strong national defense, instead of her views that trans people should have no say at all in how they are addressed, that people who wear masks to prevent the spread of covid-19 should be mocked, and then comparing herself to Jews in Nazi Germany because she was asked to be better. Those aren't beliefs that any political party would bother putting in their platform.

@horgen: Puzzling. Why post the article at all then? This is supposed to be a gaming site I thought.

This article isn't even neutral either. It very clearly takes a side, and sticks with it. Closing the comments section is sheer cowardice.

This is like holding a "change my mind" sign at a rally, then refusing to debate with anyone.

@Baconstrip78:

I guess you missed the part of my post where I said I would bet money that more people canceled D+ because of this than for all the tweets combined.

Obviously neither of us have stats, but every time she tweeted there were a few dozen twitter people saying "fire her" and nobody actually canceling (mainly because as proven time and time again, the twitter complainers are people who amplify their numbers with fake accounts and retweeting each other AND don't actually spend any money on products) but when the news broke that she was removed, there was a big burst of people posting pictures of canceled memberships.

So, all the anecdotal evidence says you're very very wrong in your estimation of "costing them the least money possible."

Also, good job immediately dehumanizing me by saying I'm offended by not being able to shit and troll on people. Because surely, anyone who disagrees with you MUST be a shitty troll, right? Typical.

Because the owners of this site don't want to be inundated with trolls espousing all manner of drivel and bs on this topic. It is intended to be an op ed piece, not a debate. Your analogy is not applicable because they aren't trying to get the reader to change the author's mind..quite the opposite. It isn't supposed to be neutral.

The intent seems rather clear so I have no idea why you are floating strawmen.

I see my point has gone over your head. The free market narrative is espoused by the GOP and those on the right, thus my point in highlighting it to illustrate the dissonance present in their 'cancel culture' critiques.

@ghost_of_phobos:It wasn't just the nazis demonizing jews, they polarized the people around them to hate them too, which is why they were able to make jews wear yellow badges and all that stuff so easily. It seemed more reasonable to the warped perspectives of the people around them.

Also the quartering always seems to say don't go after this person, I don't support that kind of thing. If you're going to ignore that, then your claim seems invalid without more evidence.

Well, yeah. That is part of the issue, the lack of tolerance.

Its a tricky matter, with people of different opinions the ideal aspect would be for them to recognize the other person perspective and understand its points instead of removing them or change them. I cant say you are wrong, I am right, I would be falling into that irony you speak off. You seem to accept that stance as long as you are on the winning side, if not in that side you will fight to win again.

There's kind of a catch-22 with the tolerance thing, and it's really a handicap of language: that being intolerant of intolerance.

There's a difference in the people on the left saying "that's hateful" and people on the right screaming "muh freedums".

What the right was censoring (and still attempting to) was expressions of nonconformity. What the left wants censored are out-right conspiratorial lies and hateful xenophobic rhetoric. There's a difference in wanting to sing "ON AND ON SOUTH OF HEAVEN" and wanting the freedom to shout "YOU (favorite racial epitaph here) GO HOME!"

So yeah, I'm enjoying the Schadenfreude.

@SUD123456: Ever heard the phrase if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen?

Why is a gaming website even posting this kind of stuff anyways? Oh right. To drive revenue and site visits. If they can't handle or moderate the comments section on some of these inflammatory op-ed pieces designed to drive traffic, then maybe don't post them? Maybe stick to i dunno, gaming related topics?

@horgen: So does there exist a contributor on Gamespot staff who doesn't feel Gina being fired was the right thing for Disney to do?

And if so, could they write an op-ed piece from a contrasting viewpoint, and actually have it published here with disabled comments?

Comments get turned off because the administration feels it will lead to insults. Which this one would certainly do.

Also I replied to someone talking about cancel culture. Which is what I addressed. Don't like it, too bad.

@LJS9502_basic: Not really. They're both sets of words on the internet that you can choose to pay attention to, or ignore. We've always had that choice.

Unless that person stalks you, follows you, phones your job to try to get you fired, post your personal info online etc.

I was on my way here to start this topic. So glad someone else did before me. Hey @GameSpot -- is this what you call journalism? Or is this just your personal outlet to push your own politics? Not sure I've ever seen such a biased, hate-filled article on this site before. There was not an ounce of objectivity -- and clearly it was just an opportunity to spew one-sided opinions with no proof of anything, while not offering anyone a chance to comment like almost every other article. That's the DEFINITION of cancel culture. "HERE IS OUR VERSION OF THE TRUTH -- if you believe something different we don't want to hear it -- MUTE." If you don't want to hear from us, then I don't want to hear from you. Enjoy your echo chamber of ignorance. Peace out.

If gamespot is so afraid of the comments on a particular article, then maybe its too politically charged to be on a website that is supposed to be primarily about gaming?

Maybe people could comment on something without insulting others? Without degrading the person who wrote the article.

All the author did in the whole article was degrade Gina Carano and anyone with a different perspective.

@wilddog73: No, The Quartering is a really cool dude. Going back to the Cyberpunk review, intentionally misrepresenting what the reviewer said, then asking his own toxic community to don't go after the person he purposely misrepresented is really magnanimous on his part. That's his MO. Come to think of it, he's really the victim here. But he has every right to be the gatekeeper of nerd culture and try to cancel whoever he wants. Not gonna say that what he does his just like Nazi Germany.

The hate Carano gets it's not state sponsored, if anything the president she loves made more to divide the nation and incite hate against his opponents than any president before him. So again, comparing people giving you shit online to Nazi Germany, or what led to the Holocaust is total insanity. But if she really stands by her words she shouldn't have deleted her posts.

@horgen: I haven't seen anyone insult in this thread except maybe the people arguing in favor of censorship. Everyone opposing it has been very well behaved, even the guy who said he wasn't being respectful about it couldn't help but be polite.

Where's the flood of insults and lack of substance?

@ghost_of_phobos:

So you admit he isn't really sending his fans after people? As for whether he misrepresented the review, I'd like to see some citations before I judge that.

@horgen: I mean I get it, and I'm fine with banning people who can't refrain from personal attacks, harassment etc.

But immature comments like that are part and parcel with any sort of gaming community. There will probably always be a segment of gamers who are extremely juvenile and immature, and yes, its mostly boys who do this.

But cutting off all (well, not all, but this forum is way less visible than comment sections) commentary on a political subject, only leaves the writers opinion, and nobody else's. Thus creating yet another echo chamber, which is the last thing we need right now as a society imo.

@appariti0n: When said toxicity gets to high, it is understandable that the authors choose to turn off comments.

@wilddog73:You’re making the mistake of using this thread and thinking the comment section would develop the same way. Different users. Different comments. More visibility which often attracts more users of the good and bad kind.

Gina did nothing wrong, disney was 100% wrong for firing her, she has costars who have posted the same type of material but they're fine because it leaned left and not right, and Mason and Gamespot are little bitches for not having a comment section for article when all their other articles have comment sections.

Gina did nothing wrong, disney was 100% wrong for firing her, she has costars who have posted the same type of material but they're fine because it leaned left and not right, and Mason and Gamespot are little bitches for not having a comment section for article when all their other articles have comment sections.

If they lean two different ways then how are they the same? That's a contradiction and Disney has the right to employ who they choose to employ. If they feel an individual will hurt them then they don't have to keep them.

@LJS9502_basic: The controversy isn't just about Gina getting fired though. Most of the attention was on whether she was being treated like a jew in nazi germany with the hate she received on twitter, wasn't it? Not that disney isn't already in a very controversial place, the thing about them filming mulan near a chinese internment camp?

And I agree that it's similar, the Nazis demonized the jews and the population started to align with that, which was why they were able to treat them like vermin.

You'd probably start to worry for your safety too if enough people called for you to lose your ability to make a living.
