Dropping the 20gig model in no way shafts current owners of the 20gig.

I would feel a little bit annoyed if a had a 20gb PS3. I mean if Sony can drop that version so easy what's next on their list not including a controller with the PS3 60gb model.

I feel annoyed that MS screwed me over by not including HDMI with the 360 for the past year and a half. Whats to stop the from making an Xbox Elite 2 with HDMI 1.3 after another year and a half unlike the HDMI 1.2 it is now. See... I can do the same.

You seem way off tangent from your original point.

Let me offer my opinion on what I think he's refering to. Since Sony is trying to cut losses, and they already sell a console without the necessary cables for HD gameplay, or a remote control or headphones and they have cut production of the lower-end version still to keep cutting losses, could they try and go further? I don't see how they can cut losses anymore without hurting the customer on the deal.

It's not a loss cutting move.  It's a revnue maximization move.  When you combine the poors sales of the unit with the higher cost per unit it's a no brainer to get rid of it.  We get it. You hate Sony.  You want to see a PS3 fail.  Don't worry, it probably won't come out "on top" this generation and you'll get your medal from Nintendo or Microsoft for standing tall and fighting the battle here on system wars.

You've got it backwards. Sony set an initial ratio of 60gig to 20gig. Then they track purchasing behavior. Because no one was buying the 20gig, they chose to tip the ratio towards producing 60gig. And now that it's a 10 to 1 ratio, they've decided to drop the 20gig altogether instead of producing 10 to 1.

Firms observe demand in order to determine their production behavior.

I really dont care if MS can afford new SKU's. If you think having 3 different SKUs is a good thing ( and knowing MS, theres more SKUs on the way ) than you're just not smart. Sony made a good move dropping the 20gb. Its not because they cant afford it, its just a better business move.

If a $100 difference can alter your plans that drastically, especially to the point you have to "save" for consumer electronics, then you probably should be investing your time in more important things besides video games.

Just because the 20gb is gone dosen't mean it can't play games. I have one and use it like a 60gb I upgraded the 20gb to 120gb for 49.99 got a wireless airbride from amazon for 16 and got the 12 memoery card reader for  10 and I noticed I never neeeded the airbridge ( i use my computer moniter because I don't have HDTV) did not need memory card reader ( I used it once) I store everything on a external hardrive. SO to me the 20gh was better and my store gave it for $ 400 with a free game ( my friend). Sony did a mistake. But they can correct this by making the 60gb 500 dollars .AND I HAVE A RARE PS3 :D

BTW I AM WRITING ALL OF THIS ON MY PS3 LINUX my VISTA COMPUTER GOT A VIRUS :x

 I guess people in these boards make a lot of money and don't have cost of living, maybe they live with their parents, heck I know it's not hard to make a $100 but it's hard to let it go with so many other expenses, unless you don't have other expenses.

I think you missed the part where I clearly pointed out that I own and enjoy both the 360 and the PS3.  In fact if you look at an earlier post of mine from today you'll notice that I said I use the PS3 mainly for a Bluray player and do most of my gaming on the 360.

I don't see what the problem is,

First, 85% of all ps3 units are 60GB versions.

Second, 92% bought a 60GB version, coz most retailers didn't sale the 20GB version. (Europe don't even have an 20GB version)

Third, why do some of you care while you don't even have a playstation 3?

1. $100 bucks is the difference between 20gb and 60gb meaning the real figure is $200 between Prem 360 and 60GB ps3.

2. How can you stand yourself? Making such a comment like that. Some people have bills to pay, kids to feed, work two jobs. And $100 is nothing to you. Well I'm glad you think so and that kind of dumb thinking is why the Wii is destroying the competition and why many people are not getting an xbox for the first time with the 360.

First off it's not $100 like you try to spin it. It's the $100 different from the versions. The price is $100 you mentioned plus $500 for the PS3 plus tax. That's a lot for let's say a single mother that has a certain budget for christmas or a birthday for her son or sons. Stop being a demeaning human being by talking about people the way you guys do like people are cheap and poor or whatever. And your spin job of trying to say $100 is the problem in pricing is laughable.

You see this is why the Wii is doing so well. That same single mother can but a Wii for $250 plus tax and it comes with a game for her kids. And she doesn't have to spend so much just to play one game on a PS3. Or a 360 if that pricing is to high for too even with all the bundles out with the Premium model now.

They're probably happy that they bought the 20 gig, because that's the model which is no longer available.

I was going to get the 20gb PS3 sometime this summer but now I have will have to wait longer to save more money. :(

1. $100 bucks is the difference between 20gb and 60gb meaning the real figure is $200 between Prem 360 and 60GB ps3.

2. How can you stand yourself? Making such a comment like that. Some people have bills to pay, kids to feed, work two jobs. And $100 is nothing to you. Well I'm glad you think so and that kind of dumb thinking is why the Wii is destroying the competition and why many people are not getting an xbox for the first time with the 360.

First off it's not $100 like you try to spin it. It's the $100 different from the versions. The price is $100 you mentioned plus $500 for the PS3 plus tax. That's a lot for let's say a single mother that has a certain budget for christmas or a birthday for her son or sons. Stop being a demeaning human being by talking about people the way you guys do like people are cheap and poor or whatever. And your spin job of trying to say $100 is the problem in pricing is laughable.

You see this is why the Wii is doing so well. That same single mother can but a Wii for $250 plus tax and it comes with a game for her kids. And she doesn't have to spend so much just to play one game on a PS3. Or a 360 if that pricing is to high for too even with all the bundles out with the Premium model now.

You missed the earlier post this was referring to when PS-3DO claimed that the $100 difference would keep him from buying a PS3.  And yes, I do know what I'm talking about.  I'm a risk assessment officer for a mortgage lender.   I judge people's financial situations for a living.

most likely, i heard it could be 80 or a 100.  The 60gig will probably be lowered to the $499 range.

Wow so $100 a month is nothing right. Funny with how high the percentage of American's make the around or below or exactly the mininmum wage for their state. Some people need $100 for food for their kids, pay off one final bill. Or maybe some people can at times save up $50 a month. What should they get their kids for christmas? A PS3 or a Wii?
And let's say their kids had a PS2 before....ofcourse you say screw the PS3 and now with the 20GB model gone its more reason to not get a PS3 for certain people.

For me the 20GB wash $599.99 here in Canada and still too much for me...especially with no games but a movie...thanks.
But now without that model that means the PS3 is $200 more then what I would pay for and still without a game for the moment, that will change in the holidays I know. But I doubt we will see a $200 price drop anytime soon along with some free game or games with your purchase like I got with my 360

DUAH. most companies would do that if they were losing money. its simple buisness, and like others have said why sell something still if no one wants it. Ton's more people baught the 60GB model over the 20 so they should sell what the people want so they wont have stock sitting on shelves.

Well this drop of the 20GB will push back when I will buy a PS3. Cause I was gonna wait for a price drop but now I will have to wait for two price drops cause now the 60GB at $100 more is the only model I can buy.
