Indeed. Plus it's very embarassing when a 7 year old handheld is beating the 3DS in sales over in Japan (talking about PSP).
Slow initial release, but like other Nintendo handhelds, they'll eventually have the best library of games. I agree with the above poster though, iOS games are definitely starting to cut into handheld gaming. 99 cents for titles, and their quality is getting better, really fast.
Nintendo hand helds never start off strong. The 3ds has a better start up then the original DS (which took a little over a year to start selling like crazy) Nintendo just needs games, and more importantly, marketing. Theirs is like a ZERO marketing campaign for this thing. They shoulda just waited until Q3 of this year.

Game Boy Advance beat PS3 in NPD sales for a few consecutive months in 2007, if memory serves. 3DS has some serious heavy hitters on the way. 3D Mario, 2D Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Ocarina of Time, Dead or Alive, Kingdom Hearts, Kid Icarus, Sonic the Hedgehog, Metal Gear Solid, Mega Man Legends, Ninja Gaiden, Paper Mario, Professor Layton, two Resident Evil games, three Shin Megami Tensei games... If a good chunk of the above games release and sales are still slow, you can press the panic button. But I have a sneaking suspicion that 3DS will explode this holiday. The probelem is the majority of gamers (especially Nintendo's new non-gamer and casual fanbase.) Won't give to craps about any of those games unless it features something "COOL" or gimicky.
Nintendo will really be in trouble when HTC releases the EVO 3D cell phone.

That doesn't mean that millions and millions of gamers won't buy Mario 3DS, Mario Kart, and just about anything else Mario that comes out on the 3DS.
Not releasing it last holiday season has been a clear mistake on their part. By the time December rolls around the buzz on this thing could be so bad it really won't boost sales enough for them to be the next big holiday item. They depended too much on word of mouth on the glasses free 3D and instead got word of mouth on headaches, nausea, and "its just a hologram card" comments.Nintendo hand helds never start off strong. The problem isn't that the PSP is beating it. The problem is that 3DS sales are on a steep decline since it's launch. Games like Mario kart and Super mario 3ds will most likely will give it a pretty big boost this Holiday.

Anyway, not surprising seeing as there isn't a killer app for the 3DS yet.
Dead or Alive, Zelda, and Resident Evil are so far away....

It's not the same market that the 3DS and NGP cater to. Those people probably have never owned a handheld gaming device. The Gameboy Advance would still be the superior alternative to a smartphone as a mobile gaming device.

Nintendo didn't sell 140 million DS's without catering to uber casuals. The problem most of them won't upgrade to the 3DS because they feel their cell phones are a sufficient replacement. Keep in mind this is the general perception, it doesn't matter if they're right or wrong.^^^ I could care less how many units are sold as long as i'm getting some enjoyment out of the games.

But there is a difference, the PSP was a new contender in the handheld market, the GBA by the time the PSP was release was the current market leader with just a few years on the market,in fact i think the GBA even out sold the DS a time or two,but the DS quickly beat both.Nintendo portables are always hot on sales,i think the 3DS is not that hot not because of the games, but because of its price, much like it happen with the PS3 back on 2006,the 3DS price is not very good,Nintendo has never hit such a high price with a successful portable. With inflation the price of the 3DS is most similar to the price of the....wait for it....ready?....Virtual Boy.
You know people are just assuming this as if one day no one will ever tire of these franchises. It has happened before (Gamecube) and it can happen again. You don't stay on top forever, just as Sony and the Roman Empire.Theres no games.

Or do I have to remind you how much NSMB wii sold?
I've seen a few 3DS commercials though they all avoid making a distinction between the 3DS and the other DS's in terms of revision and successor. I think the DS sales were so good that they wanted to let this sell without marketing, nice and slow. Their predictions were spot on minus the Japan calamity, so I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing. How do you convince the people that the 3DS isn't just another DS revision but such a significant revision that it will play different games? Right now the DS audience sees the demo's and the little part of the shelf with 3DS games and are being told by the clerk that no it won't play on a DS. I think they're going to market this thing strongly before the NGP launches, like two months before xmas. That is when their marketing money will have the biggest influence.Nintendo hand helds never start off strong. He's right. It makes sense too. Most casuals want a kind of "all in one" device. Why pay $250 for a gaming device when you can have the same features and more on the cell phone? That's probably going to be the thought process for many.
IF this comes out any time soon anyway.
