two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs
133MHz GPU
4MBs of dedicated VRAM
64MBs of RAM
1.5GBs of flash storage
Can we stop the talk about 3DS being similar to 360/PS3 now?
Put two Zunes over each other and poof! 3DS.

What is disappointing about the GPU? The article itself states that numerous developers likened it's graphical capabilities to the 360 and PS3... how is that disappointing? Especially for a hand held? What standards are you expecting?http://gear.ign.com/articles/112/1122613p1.html

Since this is not an official statement from Nintendo themselves I will take it with a grain of salt. Still, these specs would be rather disappointing. But then again I don't really know what the ARM11 can do...or two running in tandem for that matter.
storage should be 4gb atleast and 266mhz CPU? thats lame considering theres cell phones with 1ghz cpu.
with these specs i dont see it being more then 200$ . I think i will hold off on buying it if its 229 or more .
"IGN has learned that the Nintendo 3DS will pack not one, but two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, along with a 133MHz GPU, 4MBs of dedicated VRAM, 64MBs of RAM, and 1.5GBs of flash storage...the 3DS' GPU has been named DMP's PICA200, which features a maximum processing speed of roughly 200MHz, though it seems Nintendo is scaling it back a bit for use in the 3DS."
"Numerous developers working on software for the platform have likened its graphical capabilities to current-generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, albeit on smaller, lower-resolution screens."
Is it just me, or do these two statements seem incongruent with each other?

With that hardware, I think your right. They are aiming for a price point. ($200)

nintendo said they researched it, and you can't have a 3D screen also function as a touch screen. Touch screens are considered standard at this point and the psp2 will definitely have one or else will appear a step behind not only the DS but also the iPhone and iPod Touch. The only other option is to copy the DS design or figure out some other way to keep the 3D screen free from scratches and smudgesSure, and their battery life is fine because they are in your pocket in standby 90% of the time. For a handheld battery life is very important, and Nintendo have said it's important to them.storage should be 4gb atleast and 266mhz CPU? thats lame considering theres cell phones with 1ghz cpu.

No it's not just you. Makes me question the validity of these specs. No it's not just you. Makes me question the validity of these specs. I would question the validity of their sources' off-the-cuff comparisons first. Pure specs aren't subject to hyperbole.it has more ram then the cube and 2 cpus plus i hear its pretty easy to dev for . But at 133mhz the gpu seems pretty slow . I hope nintendo will let devs use a high clock speed like psp .

I think one of three things is happening. Either their "insider" made up the specs, the "developers" they talked to were just blowing smoke, or ign made the entire thing up since they didn't name any sources.

I would not be shocked at all if these are the specs. Nintendo does not make super high end hand helds they never had .

Or perhaps an amalgam of all three scenerios? People seem to go ape ish with the smallest bit of info and things are minsconstrued all the time with rumors/speculation.Those are great specs for a handheld Did seriously people expect specs from a console one? :?GiancarI do not want to see a repeat of the PS3 "599 U.S. dollars" debacle. Also, Nintendo is taking a bigger risk with releasing a handheld system with higher technical specifications as there is no guarantee that it would be profitable. After all, it is a video game-based company.

The specs are believable for Nintendo's standards. But one thing that makes me question this info is that Nintendo hardly ever has information leaks and if these specs are real that would mean it has happened twice in one year. Seems unlikely given thier tight-lipped nature.[QUOTE="topgunmv"]

i think they ment effects wise it can do some things ps3 can do .
So it's basically GC-level with some advcanced shader capabilities. Nice.
It's funny that some people were actually expecting something along the lines of a Tegra 2. This is Nintendo we're talking about. They haven't had a system with cutting-edge gfx since the N64, and it's worked for them. To be honest, there's no reason to have a handheld with current-gen level gfx.

the gc spanked the ps2 in power.

Eh? The GameCube was a beast in it's time. And I'm not expecting mind-blowing specs but I would certainly hope the 3DS' specs are better then this.So it looks like this scaled back version of PICA200 will be weaker than the quoted 15.3M polygons/second, 800M pixels/second of the GPU specs @ 200 MHz. In terms of raw power, weaker than the Xbox/Gamecube.two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs

The CPU also seems weak compared to the 1GHz Cortex A8 in the iPhone 4. 64MBs of RAM compared to 512MB on the iPhone 4. Anyway, seems like a typical generational upgrade for a Nintendo device... still a big jump over the DS.

That's my view of the situation. Developers BS about hardware like that constantly, especially if they're on the creative side and not qualified to talk about the tech. But these specs don't seem made-up, and since the press routinely hears about this stuff long before we do, it's entirely plausible that IGN got legit details from some source or other.
