Why are you comparing framerate to screen resolution? Why not both?
I game on the PC the most which means I get to see both 1080p/30fps and 1080p/60fps depending on the game and detail settings. From my own experiences, 1080p/30fps is perfectly playable so long as the framerate minimum stays close to 30fps.
What I don't want is 720p. Don't care if it's 720p/60fps. 720p? Yuk. 720p is only fine if I'm using a 17" monitor.Â
It depends on what framerate you're suggesting is achieved at 1080p. For some games I will have no issues with running 30fps/1080p, I'll never go below that. Although we could be discussing 45fps/1080p vs 60fps/720p, in that case I'll go 1080p. But in really depends on the game.
That is a tough choice. I love gaming at 1080p, so I am inclined to say that. However, it can be very troublesome on some games if the fps dips pretty low. Luckily, I have my gaming PC.
Those of you who are excited about 1080p on next gen consoles I advise you to temper your expectations. The consoles are certainly stronger techniquely, but I think many games will struggle to hit 60 fps @1080p, at least out of the gate.Â
For action games, racers and most shooters, 60fps.
For everything else, better image quality at 30fps is fine.
How about both?

Every time one of these topics is made, people miss the point completely. I'm sure the majority of gamers on this board have, at the very least, a decent mid range rig. That doesnt mean we cant discuss console specific trade offs.Resolution is the single most important setting, but 60 fps is also very important and there isn't any reason to give it up. That is, if you game on PC naturally. Consolites have lower standards it seems, and they're perfectly OK playing slide-shows.

I have to say 1080p because I never choose to drop the resolution to help the framerate, and for most games as long as it spends most of its time above 45 and doesn't dip below 30 thats fine for me.
I doubt it. There seems to be way too much going on, not to mention it was open world. Id rather see 1080p and locked at 30 to ensure smooth play. My HDTV is 240hz which smoothes things out anyway :Pi wonder if ms can pull off deadrising at 60fps 1080p

if i had to guess most PC owners don't run thire games maxed at 60fps 1080p
and if they want to compare pc games to consoles they should compare them with similar spec PC not a top end £2000 pc
Common misconception; frame locking actually works on consoles, unlike in PC games where it doesn't do what it is supposed to for a huge number of games. I've played many PC games where I get better performance running without frame locks vs frame locking (not just a higher framerate). If your basis for comparison is PC games then all I can tell you is that those options don't work.>2013

The TC wasn't clear either. Both PS4 and XB1 approximate mid-range PCs. The PS4 just happens to be at the upper part of that range while the XB1 will be at the lower part. Just like mid-range PCs, some games will run at 1080p/30fps and others will run at 1080p/60fps, depending on genre and complexity.
Both consoles will have their share of 1080p games. But, what the TC failed to mention is the XB1 will have to use 720p with some games to achieve 60 fps. My current PC approximates the XB1. Yes, a few games chug at 1080p at the highest detail settings (Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3). And yes, I also have to juggle resolutions sometimes (like what the XB1 will do). That's why I have two displays: 1080p TV and 1440x900 monitor. Depending on my mood, I can play the games (that chug) at High/1080p or Very High on the smaller monitor.

Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So the one advantage PC's have is the ability to customize hardware and upgrade to improve performance and customize settings to reach the desired framerate... and you think that in order to find out whats a better gaming platform you have to handicap the one that's better in order to compare?... So flawed and ridiculous that you may as well just cut your wrists now because life with that logic will be tough for you.[QUOTE="whitey_rolls"]This. I'm trying to get 2k at 60 FPS for the next 5 years, and you're asking 60 fps or 1080p :P
2560x1440 or 2560x1600.
It's different for every game. Dark Souls I would much prefer the 1080p over 60 fps due to the speed the game plays at.
For BF3 I need quick reactions so I want as many frames as I can get.Â
It's not as easy as 1 vs the other. Thankfully PC allows both :D
