Resolution is the single most important setting, but 60 fps is also very important and there isn't any reason to give it up. That is, if you game on PC naturally. Consolites have lower standards it seems, and they're perfectly OK playing slide-shows.

milannoir
I've never seen any slide shows on the console games I've played. There are console games that run at 60fps as well. lol!! As long as the games look good and play great, who cares?

I just noticed my card sitting at 73'C idle.

You do have a corsair 600T can't belive you don't like it

I have a Pentium 3 500mhz 64mb 16gb ati and it runs all games at 1080p at 120 fps no need to compromise

PC Gaming: Both and higher

Console gaming: 1080p at 30FPS

TBH, 60FPS isn't needed for console games though it's very ideal if the game could do it. 1080p would nice for videos and screenshots though, which is what I'm doing with the new hd capture card I bought today.

Well given that resolution only affects the visuals, but an improved framerate can help make the gameplay better, the answer is clear. I'd take the higher framerate over the better graphics.

Both. At the moment Im gaming at 100fps/1080p

I'd love to get a 1200p screen one day.

kipsta77
1200p is nothing special. I sold mine and bought a 1080p one and there's hardly a difference. If anything for 1600p if you want a huge difference :P

60 fps over 1080p any day if I had to choose one or the other.. 60 fps makes all games ruin a lot more fluid, and when there is a frame rate dip in the game.. It is barely noticeable.. Whilst when frames go below 30fps by as little as 6 frames your going to see a difference..

On a console? 1080p. I've found it doesn't matter as much when you're using a controller.

On pc, 60 fps all the time is what I shoot for in like 80% of the games I play.

Considering that most people play several feet away from the TV screen framerate seems more important to me. From a distance it gets tough to tell a difference after 720p. But of course I'm sure there will be PC gamers in here claiming they can tell the difference between 4K and 8K from 40 yards away. :)

If they could lock in a 100% 30 FPS, I would take 1080p/30fps any time.

However I agree that once you start dipping below 30fps you have big problems. Even games that fluctuate just a few frames (27,28, etc) seem juttery. However if it's a perfect 30fps with no dips, I never have an issue with that personally.

It depends on the game as well.  I think in *ALL* cases I would rather 1080p. If we are making sacrifices for 30 fps vs 60fps, then I would rather sacrifice some other settings and keep the 1080p.

I'd get both if i had a better computer at the moment. But its a matter of FPS for me. If a game is being smooth and sloppy trying to look good i end up playing bad. So Gameplay>Graphics.

You can win a graphics king thread by being 1080p but not 60fps. In all seriousness I'd take 1080p any day due to prettier pixels. Alternatively you can have 1080p/30fps for SP and 720p/60fps for MP.

Depends on the game. If it's a first person shooter and I can't get a solid 60fps at 1080p I'll drop the resolution. If it's a single player RPG/TPS I'll keep it at 1080p as long as the FPS doesn't drop below 30.

Doubling the resolution is much easier to do than doubling the framerate. If your game maxes out a system's capabilities at 1080p/30fps then there won't really be any way to pump out 60fps even if you drop to 720p.

It generally takes about 30% more GPU peformance to go from 1280 x 720 resolution to 1920 x 1080 resolution, while doubling the framerate on the other hand takes fully 100% more GPU performance.

Isn't this essentially an SP v. MP discussion?  I mean, if you're playing SP, higher rez is far more interesting to have while MP competitive gaming is heavily dependent on framerate.

Its a shame even with next gen consoles devs have to choose from 60FPS and 1080p instead of having both for many games. BF4 for example. next gen isn't as big of a techninial leap that I hoped for.

a bit off topic

how much would pc set up cost to run games same level as PS4 /X1 and do it at 60fps 1080p

Cuby_Finest

If I had gone the AMD route (FX 6300) then my current computer would of cost me $650 US dollars for the entire tower + operating system (6 core amd processor @4.1ghz, 8 gigs of ram, 7870XT thats currently overclocked to stock 7970 speeds....ect).

My computer easily surpasses the PS4/X1 in terms of power and im getting 60+FPS on pretty much any game @1080p with base settings on very high, The new AMD graphics cards are due this winter so you should be able to get a better GPU than mine for the same price due to new technology/price drops

Just how many of you have the rigs to run next gen games at 1080p/60fps? Yeah it took two or was it three 7990s to run BF4 Fishing at Baku level at 60fps, I highly doubt any of you has a single 7990 much less crossfire. You can't even run a current gen Crysis 3 at 60fps without going sli or xfire. Games like TW3 and BF4 all look better than Crysis 3 so tell me how some of you are seemingly so confident to take that for granted? It's one thing to run crossgen games at 1080p/60fps but a whole different ballpark to run a native nextgen game at that setting.

A consistent 30FPS is okay with a gamepad because the input lag isn't anywhere near as noticeable as it is on a mouse, so for most games I'd choose 1080p, but for racing or any other fast-paced games I'd go for the 60FPS.

My 780 can run Crysis 3 maxed at 1080p with an average of around 80fps. I think it's debatable whether TW3 or BF4 looks better than Crysis 3, and that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be more demanding than Crysis 3. BF3 for example runs really well, and it doesn't look much worse than BF4.

If I had to choose it would easily be 60 fps.  Frame rate issues have been the biggest issue by far this console gen (especially on the PS3).

Though with the PS4's and X1's beefy archtecture it would be inexcusable for 60fps 1080p not be the standard a couple years into next gen.

I'll give launch titles a free pass.

Boddicker
Not gonna happen, mark my words. The only reason why PC gamers can expect (at least) 1080p 60fps is because "PC" is not one single system. By contrast, a PS4 is a PS4. As long as the hardware for any given console is all essentially the same, developers are gonna know exactly what they're working with. There's always a give and take when it comes to frame rate, resolution, and detail/effects/etc. Once they've maxed out the capabilities of the system, it becomes a design choice. The developers look at the game that they're making, and determine if increasing the detail and effects in a given game is worth the necessary drop in frame rate. For many games, the answer will be a definite "yes". This would not be an issue if there were multiple versions of the PS4, and customers could choose to buy either a low end PS4 or a high end PS4. If it were like that, games would be developed to ensure that they run on the lower end console, then customers could simply buy the higher end version of that console in order to max out the frame rate, image quality, and resolution. But it's not like that. A PS4 is a PS4, an X1 is an X1. So there are just plain going to be at least some games that suffer in some category simply by virtue of the hardware being a constant. This will be true this generation, next generation, and the generation after that.
