[QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"] Sorry I'll use little words. You said: "Sony didn't have a console on the market for that first year". It did in fact. Indeed it has had mutiple (more than one)forms of different platforms out simultaneously (at the same time) this generation, and yet has consistently lost money in most quarters and has a huge deficit (loss) for the generation as a whole.

blue_hazy_basic

No wonder I didn't understand what you were saying. You're now including PSP and PS2 into the discussion?

/facepalm

Aren't they part of the gaming arm of Sony? :? Are you trolling us by pretending to be this stupid?

Oh yeah, forgive me, I forgot this thread was about comparing PS2 sales to Xbox 360 sales.

A price drop of $100 dollars isn't substantial? Lol, no one is exactly accusing Stevo of being the most intelligent guy on SW...

arkephonic

I do believe the Xbox 360 has undergone two $50 price cuts on their cheapest model over the span of six and a half years. That is not a substantial amount considering considering past consoles and their price cuts. Again, the Xbox 360 hasn't had a price drop in years compared to two price drops the PS3 has had. And once more, the notion of "ratio overall" doens't reflect current selling rates. This is common sense stuff.

Xbox had an 8 million console lead that Sony reduced to 2 millions. No matter how you want to see it or spin it the PS3 is selling better and at a faster rate than the Xbox console even with the success of Kinect.

Is this so hard to understand or are some people really that dumb? :o

That doesn't reflect current selling rates. Has sold ratio =/= is selling. The gap has widened within the previous year without any price drops, mind you.

[QUOTE="rilpas"]

it doesn't matter, in the end it's the total lifetime sales that matter

you don't see Wii fans complaining "waah waah the xbox 360 was launched first"

rilpas

What would Wii fans complain about? If anything, the fact that the Wii launched last is a testament to how much the Wii truly dominated this generation. Lets not kid ourselves, the Wii smashed both the 360 and the PS3 this generation despite launching last.

indeed, the wii sold better because it was the more popular system, followed by the 360 and lastly the PS3

should the PS3's total sales surpass the 360 then I'll change the order, until then you sound like someone in need of a waaambulance

Wii was a cultural phenomenon. It became super trendy to own a Wii for the first few years, and then terrible backlash came about. You can see this reflected in the attitude towards WiiU(pdate) and how few people intend to buy it.

In 2005 if somebody told you that a "flawless" 360 that gained a decent foothold in Japan would still be ahead of the PS3 in Spring 2012 what would you have said? Now factor in the RROD fiasco and the complete avoidance of the Japanese market would you have believed that the 360 would STILL be ahead of the PS3? The 360 lead wasn't supposed to be shrunken down to only 2-3 million, the lead was supposed to have evaporated YEARS ago. The PS3 has bled money from sony for coming up on 6 years, all the while still not selling well enough to make MS lower the 360 price. Can you imagine where Sony would be if MS was concerned enough about sales to be willing to lose even half the money Sony did? The ONLY way you can call this gen anything other than a disaster for Sony is if you lower your expectations to where the PS3 would have been discontinued early on this console gen.

A lot of these arguments, yours included, focus on how the Xbox 360 is such a bad console, that it's incomprehensible how the PS3 hasn't overtaken the sales lead, and because it hasn't, the PS3 is a failure.

The 360 may be my least favorite current gen console that I own, but I think it's far from a bad console...

"lost the argument"? I'm barely a part of this thread and I've seen you get pretty clearly ripped apart. You're not helping the PS3 with this conversation. At some point facts are facts, and I understand disqualifying everyones point and using technicalities to skew the information but We've all seen it enough to no longer be impressed by it. It's over, move on to next gen, you're not going to win this one, But Sony did do well enough to still be around. That in itself is a victory of some Sort.

He's not far off though. By Dec 10th, 2005, it had launched in US, Canada, Europe, and Japan. I think he's a week early on the date for US and Canada.

360 fans don't like it when people talk about the first year head start. They can't dispute it. They just pretend it doesn't exist and both consoles launched in Nov 2006 lol.

A Dozen? Would you say that's about how many times you've posted that same blurb? It states that Microsoft got a system to the market faster, that performed better and sold more. Even the gap that sony is closing in on is considered normal by both due to market saturation. They should end pretty dead even. As far as cost of system goes the PS3 is more expensive and always has been, you can micromanage all the costs of peripherals but You won't win that war either. The PS3 is a really good system, no one is knocking it on it's own, but sony has mismanaged it from the start and failed to cease countless advantages and opportunities. They truly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Stop using logic, Lemmings hate that.

It in no way focuses on the 360 being a bad console...quite the opposite in fact. The 360 is good enough of a machine to be able to withstand those missteps and despite the fact that it is a year older can and likely will still take down the PS3...the machine that in your mind is the best this generation. If anything my argument shows that maybe the gulf YOU think exists between the machines isn't nearly as large as you think or it may not even be there at all. I actually called this gen the way it played out 1 wii, 2 360, 3 PS3(though only because I thought the Wii would be a companion system to the other two in many households). I'm just glad that finally Sony wasn't able to BS it's way to the top...though many STILL believe the overstated capabilities of the ps3 even now.

[QUOTE="fadersdream"] "lost the argument"? I'm barely a part of this thread and I've seen you get pretty clearly ripped apart. You're not helping the PS3 with this conversation. At some point facts are facts, and I understand disqualifying everyones point and using technicalities to skew the information but We've all seen it enough to no longer be impressed by it. It's over, move on to next gen, you're not going to win this one, But Sony did do well enough to still be around. That in itself is a victory of some Sort.-ArchAngeL-777-

Lol, ripped apart?

No one has even disputed the original post yet!

  • The Xbox 360 has sold 65.6 million units worldwide.
  • The Xbox 360 launched on November 16th, 2005.
  • The Xbox 360 has been on the market for 77 months / 6.42 years.
  • The average Xbox 360 console sales per year has been 10.22 million consoles.
  • The Playstation 3 has sold 62.9 million units worldwide.
  • The Playstation 3 launched on November 17th, 2006.
  • The Playstation 3 has been on the market for 65 months / 5.42 years.
  • The average Playstation 3 console sales per year has been 11.61 million consoles.

360 fans don't like it when people talk about the first year head start. They can't dispute it. They just pretend it doesn't exist and both consoles launched in Nov 2006 lol.

really? because it seems to me that sony made a blunder by taking so long to launch the PS3 and that now, somehow, that's Microsoft's fault

gensigns

Wait...is thispicture real? Was Sony's arrogance really that blatant and public?

I'm f*cking glad this gen had messed them up. Maybe if/when they sort themselves out they will be more f*cking humble next time.

Let me put it into conext for you:

Lemmings are trying their hardest to be NICE to you. That's how bad Sony is doing financially right now.

They are losing so much money that their system wars enemy is showing pity.

I get why people are bashing the TC's argument, but bottom line is the PS3 has made significant cuts into the 360's year head start lead, despite the 360 always having the price advantage, and Sony seeming to do everything they could to kill the Playstation brand name in 2006. Sales between the two are moot. About as moot as last gen between the Xbox and Gamecube.

Umm, Cows are the ones who always bring up the sales since they've both been on the market to proclaim victory(see TC), while Lems go by total sales. Why should MS be penalized for being able to offer a less expensive machine a year earlier than Sony with pretty much identical gaming capabilities?

As an aside, let's not forget the 360 was competing with the mythical dual 1080p, twice as powerful PS3 for that first year, rather than the actual PS3 that we got. Sony has always overstated its machines power in attempts to hold off buyers until they make their late entrance into the market, and it worked twice....sometimes the third time isn't the charm I guess.

Nah, but seriously, I don't really care, this is the internet, anything is fair game. If people want to make fun of people for losing jobs, having little amounts of money, make fun of mentally disabled people, mock death, that's fine with me. It's the internet, anything is fair game.

This is just facts, not a blame game. But if you want to blame someone, you have it reversed. Microsoft rushed the HW out to a colossal failure rate. They made the blunder in doing that because it nullified any advantage they gained off launching early. They would have been better off just launching side by side with Wii and PS3 with a more stable and tested product.

I disagree. Although I was severely burned by the 360's hardware failure, the success the console has had in the US is undeniable. I mean look at the sales of Mass Effect 3 from the NPD. Speaks volumes.

EDIT: I'm referring to the success it's had despite the hardware failure... I think the one year headstart really helped it in the US.

lol this is exactly what I mean "total sales"...as if they both launched on the same day. Of course 360 is going to have more total sales...its been on the market for a year longer. And while your trying to make excuses with the "mythical" PS3, try some real issues: 1) PS3 launched right in the face of Microsoft's biggest exclusive year this gen with Gears of War, Forza, Halo, Mass Effect, and other timed exclusives like Bioshock. 2) 360 enjoyed a huge price advantage for two years before PS3 could even the scales there. And STILL, 360 lags behind in sales per year. They had the knockout punch right there and glanced it right off the side of Sony's face.

Yeah I think that's got a lot to do with the 2007 lineup. It was by far their best and sort of cemented the 360 as the console to have in the US...especially with the high school and college crowd.

I like to look at it this way.

PS2 - 150 million sales
PS3 - 62 million sales

Xbox - 24 million sales
X360 - 65 million sales

SONY LOL
