"This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who's got the biggest install base, or who's selling most in any particular week or month, but I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry. It's difficult to talk about Nintendo, because we don't look at their console as being a competitor. They're a different world, and we operate in our world - that's the kind of way I look at things. And with the Xbox - again, I can't come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity." - Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai

In other words: "We are the number one because we don't count our competitors (who are actually beating us)"

I bet they are also number one in the handheld market... if they don't count the DS.

Or in the portable media player market,... if they don't count Apple.

Or in the TV market... if they don't count Philips, Sharp, Samsung or Panasonic.

Gotta love Sony.

lol Sony... you're so silly!!! I understand what they are saying about the Wii... Microsoft doesnt even involve themselves with the system either. Sure, it's convenient that both Sony and MS "forget" that they are competing with the Wii... but Nintendo has taken a different path this gen. That leaves MS and Sony battling it out on that "other path" to the top... even if the Wii is already there. So yeah, Kaz... funny.

well sony at the moment has the system that has the largest life span, wii is a gamecube with motion sensors and the 360 is reaching the end of the road. the ps3 is not only a game system it is also a blue ray movie player and since blue ray won the movie wars this makes ps3 a two in one deal so sony does not have to make a new system since there's will survive for a while yet.

Somewhere around the line yeah. They obviously don't count the DS as a competitor or Apple as well. And they most certanily are dominating they console market. Like a fat man running the marathon, alone.

Lol I agree. however because PS3 is the most high tech consoles means they won't have to make another console for another 10yrs. if they are smart they will use this time to enforce the psp or find a way to make games for the PS3 quicker. Wii is winning now but they will eventually have to make another console. X360s just die of red light so no worries there even though they have the most games.

What is the word that fits for the Xbox?

HarlockJC

Kaz Hirai - "So basically ignoring all facts we are still declaring ourselves winners and leading the industry despite being completely trounced at the end of 2008 when it comes to sales in both software and hardware. Its hard to talk about Nintendo because they are completely dominating the market in every region and breaking just about every record we've ever set with the Playstation 2 and its been out on the market just as long as the Playstation 3. Then its even harder to talk about Microsoft because they are also staying ahead of us and taking games we depended on in previous generations to sell our consoles. So keeping all that in mind, we've decided that they aren't competing with us since we came up with Bluray and the Cell processor which means we are leading the industry. If I had to describe the Playstation 3 in one word I guess I'd say "disillusionally awesome!" What? That's two words? No its not, cause we said so."

That is pretty much what I got from that. Is it still any surprise Sony is in last?

"Leading the industry"? Let's see: - The Wii has expanded the gaming market beyond what was expected this gen. That strikes me as leading. - The Xbox360 has become a successful product, one that in some respects even Sony is trying to emulate (online gaming would still be in the dark ages). Oh, and it will probably end up with a comparable user base by the time the next systems roll around (I'm not going to try to predict which one will sell more, just that it will most likely be close). The PS3 is a great product with loads of features, yeah, but the only real unique thing it's introduced is BluRay.

It's this silly notion a lot of the Sony fans have that their PS3 is built on crazy technology that they brought back from the future with their wacky time machine they got hidden at Sony HQ.

No marketing will change the price barrier which the PS3 has. We all know 199$ is the sweatspot for systems and it's showing.

Now where Sony marketing is failing is on the games. Killzone 2 is coming out in 1 month and i see no marketing at all. I expect Sony to do a lousy job with marketing just like they have done previously with all of their PS3 titles.

No, what they are saying is they are #1 because they have sold more consoles (PS1, PS2 and PS3) than their competitor combined throughout their entire existences.

Granted, that is meaningless in terms of the present and future...but it is still a fact.

Who says the Xbox 360 is reaching the end of the road? Sony PR? That doesn't make it fact. Considering the power of these consoles, I don't neither of them will be able to last 10 years. Both of them have 512 mb of ram. PS3's 512 is evenly split between video and general ram while Xbox 360 is 512 mb of general ram. Processing power is not sufficient to carry the difference so more ram will be needed prior to the 10 years being up. It's kind of strange how no one takes this into consideration. Instead fanboys on both sides point to sales or GS review scores.

They COULD change the price if they wanted to, their next revision of the ps3 is expected to make it so they dont lose money on the ps3, they only loose £50 per console at the moment... If they drop the price, they will do better, its silly how they thin great games alone will sell the console when their cheaper competitors are doing so much better...
