Activision: Blockbuster games should be 70 pounds or more.

I actually found this at the MW2 boards, but it will be seen more here. Story:

"Modern Warfare 2 and the UK have been strange bedfellows in the media lately, with news that Activision will raise the price of the game to £54.99 (nearly $90). According to game industry mogul (and former Sony Europe boss) Chris Deering, the price hike isn't high enough. Deering tells MCV that blockbuster games simply aren't being produced efficiently enough, saying that the price of such games would actually have to cruise up to £70 ($115!) in order to support the industry as they once did.

That said, Deering realizes that there is "a psychological glass ceiling" for the amount consumers are willing to spend, and notes, "Consumers won't spend more, but to write the game, publishers are having to spend more than ever before. That's the key problem."

Of course, the flipside of this is that game prices could be lower if they were produced more efficiently -- or if the games market grew large enough to support the industry by buying more copies. But $115 games? Ouch."

They can do that if they want to and justify it all they want, but I will just buy something else.

yes if you wanna kill gaming then thats the way to go. also how exactly are publishers spending more? especially activison? cod MW2 is MW1 with new maps etc.

Activision fails. Whatever, I was boycotting their terrible games when they screwed up Tony Hawk with THPS4. All their bullsh** lately is just icing on the cake.

This is the beginning of the end. The cost of producing high end games is increasing without end in sight.

This is why I prefer niche titles.

While he's right in theory (sales have remained constant despite ballooning development costs), you'd figure Activision would be smart enough to keep their mouths shut. I somehow doubt the practice of slapping a new coat of paint on CoD/Guitar Hero/Tony Hawk every year and calling it a sequel is becoming prohibitively expensive.

if it does ever reach that price i will stop gaming, simple as that for me to be honest. i am not willing to pay £70 on one game not matter how good it is.

Oh Activision, can't you just stop running your mouth for 5 freaking seconds so I can not regret it when I buy Starcraft 2?

If anything game prices should be lower, Steam sales have already shown games are highly price elastic.

Those that discounted their games by 10 percent saw a 35% uptick in sales--that's dollars, not units. A 25 percent discount meant a 245 percent increase in sales. Dropping the price by 50 percent meant a sales increase of 320 percent. And a 75 percent decrease in the price point generated a 1,470 percent increase in sales."

who would spend that much money on a game thats more than likely to be some rehashed garbage, which is all activision seems to be good for now a days...if anyone actually buys this they are supporting the end of gaming as we know it
