I have had many a heated argument with some ignorant arse who decides it's "cool" to throw n-bombs around every second. "But I know black people and it's cool." Yeah, right. Try saying the n-bomb to a black person you meet off the street. And then try to stay alive..

Ok, I have said it and nothing has happened. I'm obviously still alive (or am I imagining this in the afterlife?)
Do I get a cookie or something? Oh, and I said it in a deragatory way. Nobody is gonna do anything, I don't understand why people say "say that to a black person and see what happens"
Yeah because black people are just so tough, ZOMG!
Get real. Black people are not intimidating, they pose no more of a threat than any other race.
You did? COOL MAN !!! YOu're SO BADA$$!! seriously.. are you like 5 or something?
You obviously didn't get my point..
So, i'll ask you the same question. Are you 5?
[QUOTE="6matt6"][QUOTE="CaptainUber"]To break away from the current debate on 1st amendment rights-which is an awesome thing to see- ,here is one of my methods of dealing with the "ilk" of Xbox Live; confusion.
Here's an example: once I was playing Halo 3 with a random group of people. Everything was fine until an obviously prepubescent voice started singing his version of the Barney theme song, complete with anti-Semitic lyrics. After 15 minutes of this, and everybody else in the game responding with the standard "STFU NOOB" I opted for a different approach. I asked the kid what caused him to sing this song, so plainly and eloquently voicing his deeply held conviction that "JOOWS are STOOPID" and were in need of much killing. After brashly inquiring about my sexuality, I retorted something about how he "clearly didn't understand the faith of those he was persecuting, and therefore an anti-Semitic theological discussion was beyond his present cerebral capabilities." He then said some things about my mom, and quit the game. There was much rejoicing.
Anyway, that's what I usually do if there is a problem with hate-speech during a game. If nothing else, you can get some really entertaining/ironic discussions going on.

This is why i believe we are making mountains out of mole-hills. Immature children do not = racist bigots.
If you don't discourage that behavior at a young age than what is stoping that kid from growing up into a racist bigot???
There is discouraging a certain type of behaviour then taking it out of proportion two different things.
If you pay a fee for online then there should be mods....If it were free like Sony's online then I would understand more. But I feel if I am paying for live then there should be mods to keep those kind of words out. This is not something you want your kids to hear. HarlockJC
Good luck getting Microsoft to pay for enough mods to cover how many hundreds of thousands of games? Its not like WoW where you can just summon a Mod or GM to a certain location to take care of the situation. There are so many people playing so many different games out there that Microsoft would have to hire an entire suburb (at the very least) to handle the rampant bigotry that goes on on Xbox Live.
What microsoft NEEDS to do is start paying MORE attention to Feedback. As it stands, I don't think they pay close enough attention to that. I am constantly seeing players with high bad behavior percentages and yet, they are still playing. I feel that if you reach a certain percentage on feedback, (let alone if you are recieving bad feedback on a consistent basis) than the system should automatically mute the player on the first offense, and THEN ban the player from Xbox Live from like a week to indefinitely depending on how many times he reaches that state. I understand that this can get abused by little kids that become sore losers, and just give bad feedback for the sake of retaliating, but I think there are ways to ensure that doesn't happen.

Your defending kids learning racist biggot stereotypes. You understand how you look right now correct? Its simple dont teach your kids racist, biggot stereotypes. Teach your kids the truth and everything is fine. All those kids learn that stuff from grown ups so keep that in mind.

You don't have to modd every game. Once it out there that you could get modded everything would slow down. There would still be people getting away with stuff. But if you are worried that you may never be able to play live again if you are found out saying a few choice words. Then I am sure you would stop saying it rather then risk it.
I personally love the racist/homophobic comments. I dont say them myself (i barely talk unless its to plan stuff in a game), but i LOVE hearing people get into arguments, seriously its so hilarious.
That's like the best part of mic's, some people are way too sensitive, im hispanic, you could call me any derogatory term what so ever and i wouldnt flinch, i just dont feel anything at all. I dont get why everyone gets so uptight over words its not like they're poking your eye out through the TV screen. Here's a tip: IGNORE!. it works.
You cant regulate it, so I dont get the point of bringing it up...yes its rampant and its actually pretty sad.
I played CS for a long time and its rampant there as well, but luckily if you pub 95% of servers have a 0 tolerence for that and give warnings / bans for it. I have played CS for about 7 years now and I found in the earlier times that it was almost non existant, now its every where, racism that is, homophobic remarks have always been there. I'm not against free speech of any kind and never will be, its funny because aside from the couple white nationalists in the bunch, most of em would probably not be caught dead saying outside of it, so I don't think its worth caring about.
I also wont lie, I've said and still say "homophobic" remarks but I never start the "arguement", someone has to say something to me first. I dont say racist remarks however, at all.

I believe they do both.
http://kotaku.com/362810/the-xbox-live-police
However, although it sounds great on paper and I do believe they're doing what they say they're doing, I think they need to do better at keeping the public informed. I know there's a perception that the feedback system doesn't work. And I think that's only because we don't see the end result of our feedback.
At the same time, I can see why they don't release numbers on a regular basis. Squashing the percepction that feedback doesn't work could very well create a perception that since people are being banned, XBL must be a terrible place to game. So it cuts both ways.
The same can be said about moderating the game sessions. I will bet money that as soon as they publicize that they actively monitor X number of sessions per day, people will start accusing MS of eye-in-the-sky, big-brother violation of privacy. Again, it cuts both ways.

Where is that in the constitution? When the conservatives talk about rights they tie them to the founding father's and what was written in the constitution. I agree with you to an extent but is it the parents responsibility to police what their kids write on GS or is it GS's? When you are a private company providing a service you have a degree of obligation to try and ensure that the people using or paying for your service are not being abused. Now you can use the mute button so you don't have to listen to those people but I wish MS would take steps to ban those who regularly use racial or homophobic language to attack people. You or anyone other than my son's hunger is not my responsibility. If I can donate or give back I do and have. But man isn't it grand that people like you feel it's my obligation to feed everyone else.
Again back on topic. Its the parents obligation to parent their child. It's your right to hit the mute button.
Finally, someone large in the industry said it, and I give props to Adam for having the guts to make the situation known. I recently started playing on Xbox Live again, and I know how irritating it can get when you're playing an aggravating match. Profanity is generally accepted in such stressful moments, but anything like racial slurs and homosexual insults are absolutely unacceptable. Even if the person you are chatting to is not part of any of these groups, you are directly insulting those who were born a different way then you are, and you are helping to spread such offensive language.
If anyone tells me that when they use such words as the N-bomb, and **** and don't really mean for them to be launched as verbal harm against anyone, stop kidding yourselves. You are doing the same as spitting directly at someone's face while claiming it was an accident, and you are basically saying the message "You and all your people are **** upon this Earth!" Such words were created by the hate of those who committed crimes against humanity , and when you use such language, you are aligning yourself under their banner. If you don't wish to offend or hurt anyone, then you will stop using such words, which is not very difficult at all - you just simply have to put your mouth under control. Yes, it's that simple.

You are right it is my job has a parent to keep my son from saying it but hearing it even harder. When I had live I never let my kid play without me. If I ever found my son saying some of the things which were said on live. Well lets just say he would not be a very happy kid, luckly this has never been a problem. Then because of how often nasty words were said came though the TV. I stopped playing live with him altogether.
There two problems with that. First MS should not let the sound go thought the TV. If that been fixed then even better. Second, is that you pay for live. Has a customer I should expect something in return for my money. One of those things should be mods.
Couldnt agree more, i hate getting on xbox live with my friends and having the headset on, because there are so many of those damn little kids saying **** that pisses me off.
on PSN there is that occasional **** but i've encountered it less but i know its still out there, but i think playing mostly RSV2 that i dont hear alot of them on there. But sometimes in CoD4 there are those **** that I wanna kick in the teeth...
And many of CSS server has these dumbasses, but at least there if u find a good server with logical and level headed mods, u can avoid all that stupid **** people say.

I'd say it's the parents fault AND the public school (or private) because that'e where the kid spends most of his time (home and school). Most likely the kid learns it at the school and then uses it online. In some cases kids learn it at home, but then those parents really don't care.
[QUOTE="masiisam"][QUOTE="HarlockJC"]If you pay a fee for online then there should be mods....If it were free like Sony's online then I would understand more. But I feel if I am paying for live then there should be mods to keep those kind of words out. This is not something you want your kids to hear. HarlockJC
I am not calling you out Harlock..but I just want to comment on this in general...
It is the job of the parents to moderate the actions of their children. .......period..........It is not MS's responsibility to do so...hell it's nobody's responsibility other than the parents...
When I hear a kid scream profanity thought the mic..I don't want to reach though the headset and grad him. I want to grab his/her parents and slap the crap of the them..
I dislike the general idea that the parents are not at fault and it is because of said implantations are not in effect is the reason why kids are acting this way.
I agree and again my post was not directed towards you at all........just general comments on my side..
My 8 year old knows not to play live without mom or I setting it up for them....We let him play with his mic on with his friends....outside of that... no voice..... what... so... ever...
What I did with the sound though the TV issue was to set the voice sound though the headset..and just not run the headset..

Yea..but as parents they should see a change in the kids interactions at home.... That's where parents need to do there job.. correct them an instill solid values that interactions like that are not acceptable..
At the end of the day nobody cares about your children as much as a parent will..so I am not going to trust anyone other than my wife or I to engrain values upon them..

I know and did not take it that way
Anyway I plan to get live again sooner or latter. So I may try the same trick you did. My son is 8 also.
Edit: I would love to see MS step up to the plates and start modding now. I think if they don't do something about these problems it going to get worse and end up on the news. Which is going to end up being bad for everyone.

No, there should be parents watching their children. Mods will ruin the freedom because there a lot of things that could get moderated that really shouldn't.
masiisam...great tip on the tv sound issue. Funny thing is my son is 8 as well.
Mic with friends ONLY. No accepting random friend requests. Only games that are approved by me etc. etc. So simple but 90% of the parents don't even bother. Hence the problem Adam refers to.

Exactly.
Issue is 2 parts. One what your kid says. Two what your kid hears.
I did setup live to only allow my kids to talk to friends and I have to approve the friends list. BUT when at school he's out side of my control and he learns a lot of things I'd rather him not learn. So the school has some responsibility here too. My son even complains to me about it, but the school doesn't care.

You don't have to modd every game. Once it out there that you could get modded everything would slow down. There would still be people getting away with stuff. But if you are worried that you may never be able to play live again if you are found out saying a few choice words. Then I am sure you would stop saying it rather then risk it.
Thats the problem though. It wouldn't work. Thats what the Feedback system is for. "supposedly" microsoft looks closely at the feedback for players that are recieving complaints, and depending on how high and consistent the poor feedback comes in, they SUPPOSEDLY ban you. So the threat of ban IS there, but I don't think Microsoft really handles it to the best that they can. Thats why i say that they should put more effort into the feedback system and start cracking down harder on the matter. Like I said, if someone recieves bad behavior feedback, mute them for a week or so for a first offense, following offenses result in a ban for however long. If they actually started doing stuff like this, and made it known to the public, than Like you said, you should see less of it happening because the threat IS there. Sadly though MS doesn't put enough effort into this, and bigotry runs rampant.
If microsoft released a press release today about banning 50k accounts for poor feedback through Xbox live, I guarantee youd see a drop in it.
Its a real problem. I for one have a bad bad mouth when playing games...I have anger issues like you dont know...BUT....When I do play online I says words like "butt, jerk, dork, freakin"...stuff like that...I try and keep it to PG13 or lower...I have 2 boys...11, and 14. They dont need to hear their dad talking like a street thug. My kids have NEVER heard me curse and I hope never will..
But the cursing on LIVE is one reason why I have let my subsctiption go. I got tired of having to mute some foul mouthed jerk after my kids hear things like **** ect..ect...Its out of control and I feel if we are paying 50$ a year for their service they need mods on EVERY server someway somehow...
People need to grow up and go back about 30 years manners wise....Sometimes not saying anything is better then showing your Azzzzz....
