Sony's official guidelines for 3D gaming on PS3 limit the displayed image to a resolution of 720p, a Sony representative confirmed at the Develop conference this week.

Even games that run natively at 1080p resolution, like Super Stardust HD, are downscaled in 3D mode to two 720p images (one for each eye), Sony's Simon Benson explained during a demo of the technology at the conference. While the PS3 is capable of displaying a 1080p 3D image -- indeed, it will support 3D Blu-Ray movies at that resolution later this year -- Benson said upping the resolution comes at the expense of the silky-smooth 60 frames per second available at 720p (Blu-Ray movies run at 24 frames per second). Benson said that a "more cinematic game" might be well-suited for the lower frame rate and higher resolution, but that Sony's current guidelines for 3D games wouldn't allow for such a setting.

The effects of this policy are probably unnoticeable to most gamers. Benson said that, in 3D, even trained computer graphics artists could barely tell the difference between the resolutions. Still, for all you pixel counters out there who obsess over "full HD 1080p," here's another bit of technical trivia for you to argue over.

and this is a surprise because? Vast majority of the current 2d games are rendered at 720p with no or 2-4xAA and sometimes even lower than 720p and most of the times at 30fps. Did anyone expected 3d games on PS3 to be at 1080p? I will be surprised if they can pull of something like killzone 3 at 720p 30fps in 3D and still image guality looks almost as good as the 2d

Not that surprising, you need an i7 computer running two GTX 480s in SLI to get reliable 1080p 3D Vision gaming (and even then, the more demanding games like Metro 2033 would be lucky to reach 30 fps). Most PS3 games natively run at 720p or lower anyway, so it'd be a pipedream to hope for 3D 1080p for any non-PSN game. There's always something to look forward to next generation.

We actually have head tracking already with PS Eye/Move, Gran Turismo 5 is using it.

CELL? Powerfull?

D. Comparison to GeForce 7800 GTX GPU

We implemented the same algorithm on a high end state of
the art GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX running in a
Linux workstation. This GPU has 24 fragment shader
pipelines running at 430 Mhz and processes 24 fragments
in parallel. By comparison the 5 SPEs that we used process
20 pixels in parallel in quad-SIMD form.

The GeForce required 11.1 ms to complete the shading
operation. In comparison the Cell/B.E. required 11.65 ms
including the DMA waiting time

From Sony's own words, 5 SPEs(with DMA) is roughly equal to Geforce 7800 GTX

Well, there are over 200 games rated "Excellent" in 3D Vision by Nvidia itself. And even if we ignored all of them, there are certainly games made with 3D in mind (the so-called '3D Vision Ready' titles): Battlefield Bad Company 2, Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet 2, Metro 2033, Batman Arkam Asylum, Just Cause 2, Mafia 2, etc. I guess this is really something people have to decide for themselves, because to me it seems like far and away the best 3D solution out there right now.

I guess this is a great news, that means the PS3 can do 3D without any resolution compromisation as we thought. Most PS3 games run at 720p anyway.

I remember when 3D was announced the first time, most of us thought the HD quality is done for good and the 3D games will all be sub HD.

For a specific operation  You can't really compare CPUs and GPUs, few weeks ago Intel also confirmed their CPU is only 1/14 of processing power of an Nvidia GPU on a specific task.

mysterj

Notice the title "Deferred Pixel Shading on the Playstation 3". SPE is not quite a real CPU e.g. Fold @ Home CELL/SPE client is not same as X86/PPE work types.

SPE count as CPU or not has nothing to do with my argument, Cell doesn't just do "deferred pixel shading", and GTX 7800 certainly can be used to do other calculation as well, if other tests were ran with SPE/GPU doing other tasks then the comparable processing speed would be very different. So ur 5 SPE= GTX7800 argument is completely false and the only basis for it was one simple test which you misinterpreted.

...he said that because he's pointing out your ignorance of nVidia's 3D. There are hundreds of PC titles that work fantastically with the glasses, and another dozen built with native support for them. For example, right now Blizzard is developing a patch to make Starcraft II work perfectly with 3D glasses (which is not hard to do, it isn't, games don't "have to be built from the ground up" for 3D... they're already 3D, you're just gleaming the Z-axis and doing some calculations). Anyway, it's a bit more complicated than that obviously, but this notion that a PS3 is capable of better 3D than PCs is idiotic. At the end of the day, good 3D output is about graphical processing power, the PS3 isn't in the same ballpark as the GTX 480

3d gaming in general has limitations no matter what your gaming on, for ps3 itll be limited to 720p, and im pretty sure that for pc gaming in 3d the fps is capped at 60, i could be wrong but im pretty sure i read that somewhere

That limit might be not caused by CPU or even GPU, it might be bandwith limit of HDMI chipset inside PS3 :> it's HDMI 1.3 that was not made for 3D

No that limit its due to not having a powerfull enough GPU ( and to some extend CPU ) to be capable for 1080p with 3d mode ( most 2d games are already a 720p 30fps let alone 3d games )

[QUOTE="subrosian"][QUOTE="mysterj"] There def will be dedicated 3D games on PS3, I don't know why you would randomly list KZ2/RE5  I don't know what games are actually being built for 3D but the Crysis footage in 3D was def poorly received by the press compare to KZ3.

...he said that because he's pointing out your ignorance of nVidia's 3D.

You do realize that some 3D basically just puts space between left/right eye image and produce a cheap pop out effect.(there's ur not hard to do) Anyways there's absolutely no press on nVidia 3D so no one actually knows how they run so everybody's in the dark about how well these "3D compatible" games are implemented. OFC PS3 don't have the horse power as the latest GPU but it's silly to assume PC developers will actually spend the effort or have the same budget for a market that has yet to materialize.

I think it's because the Tv's can only produce 1080p Images, and for 3D it needs to produce 2 images, so 2x 720 = 1080.

Plus the processing power of the PS3 can only do 1080p I think, so again 2x 720p = 1080...

But I honestly have no idea, I think that's why its capped @ 720, but you'd have to ask somebody who knows this subject better than I do.

Now what I want to know is say a 3D enabled game (like Wipeout HD) which was @ 1080p is now 720 for the 3D images, if you turn it off can it go back to being non 3D and be 1080p??

Sony lying again, all the games run at 1280x720 and some times at 1024x600. So in 3D, games will run with resolution lower than 1280x720.

almost all games are 720P anyway, so who cares? Is this more like a maximum potential, but many will be lower such as 480P? There are maybe 3 games that are actually 1080P.
