Five million copies were pirated.
One million were bought legitimately.
That's staggering.

Their calculation of piracy is based purely on speculation, not including any important factors like erratic speeds in P2P downloads,or slower Internet speeds in many countries that pirate the most. Now Im not saying the game wasn't pirated heavily,it probably was,but I don't trust that CDPR's statement that isn't backed by any true facts...
On the other hand,Witcher 1&2 were both financial successes, both provided good profit to the developer, and enabled them to expand.Piracy rate, whatever it was, didn't stop Witcher games from bringing great ammounts of profit, and that's what matters the most...
Of course, and I have no doubt that Namco Bandai will achieve financial success by releasing this title on the PC.
But massive amounts of piracy are never a good thing for a video game, and some developers (like Epic Games) have decided to forego releasing their games on the PC specifically because of rampant piracy.
We know that Dark Souls will be heavily, heavily pirated on the PC.
The question really is "Will the mass amount of piracy be enough to dissuade the publisher from future PC releases?"

What games didn't Epic release on PC? Gears 2/3 is aMicrosoft decision as we know they had the rights to the trilogy. They released Bulletstorm on PC, Unreal Tournament is on PC. What else have they made?I think the answer to your question is whether or not they profit from the PC release, if they do then sure why not release future titles on PC? Piracy will always exist heavily on PC you just have to focus on your legitimate consumers. It seems like the type of game that will do well on PC though.

I remember the president of Epic Games saying that the reason they didn't release the other Gears games on the PC was because of piracy.
Here's the link if you want:

But is piracy increasing on the PC because it's so easy to do?
Are the amount of "legitimate consumers" legitimate because they want to support the developer, or legitimate because they're ignorant about piracy?
The fear is that single-player oriented PC titles like Dark Souls (yes, I know it has multiplayer) are becoming less and less financially solvent because of piracy and piracy's impact on console sales of the game.

It's more cinematic on the Xbox 360 with the Blight Town lag, sub 720p resolution and blurrier textures.
Xbox 360 still wins you scrub :P.
You forgot the terrible controls on PC too :)
These tears are so delicious.Yay, having good, solid frame rate is always a great thing. No sense settling for choppy and slow when you don't have to.LovePotionNo9
Cosign, these games had alot of FPS issues, hopefully the pc version fixes the slowdowns the ps3 versions had and allow this PC version to use the PC's hardware well.
Got my hopes up for nothing... Congrats pc players for getting a great game but I woulda liked to see something bigger

Bigger? What could be bigger then a pc version that would fix the FPS issues the game had on ps3?
Remember how fast Alan Wake made all its money back when it came to PC/steam? ONE DAY!
Im sure this game will sell very well, especially if they put it up on steam.

But how much does the piracy rate matter if the game brings profit in the end?
Yes,there will probably be a signifficant piracy rate for Dark Souls, but Im also sure the game will bring a nice ammount of profit, its simply the kind of game a core PC audience likes, also keep in mind how more niche titles sell well on the PC.Doubt it will be hard for the PC version to match the profit made from console versions,on two consoles only 1,5 million copies were shipped. Also keep in mind how a PC sale brings more profit to a publisher/developer than a console sale, especially if we're talking about digital sales...
Im sure publishers first and foremost care about the profit they recieve from sold copies, everything else is secondary.Piracy rate is meaningless if the profit is satisfactory...

That's exactly the problem...it's all hypothetical.
If you were trying to sell milk cartons, and people made copies of your milk cartons instead of buying them, wouln't you be annoyed?
The only thing that was lost is potential copies...people who had the money to buy the game and had the interest to buy the game, but didn't because it's so easy and convenient to pirate.
-
If it's really easy to pirate, you're going to get more people pirating.
And if you have more people pirating, there's a greater amount of people who would have bought the game but didn't because it's much easier and cheaper to pirate.
-
Not everybody pirates because of this, but there are still many, many pirates that do.
-
And the issue is that if it's really easy to pirate on the PC, more people will just pirate the PC version instead of buying the console version, as it is comparatively much harder (but still very possible) to pirate console games.
I'm certainly not going to pay full price for a better version of a game I already have. I'll probably get it down the road, though

Yes,its true how pirating on PC is more convinient, but the argument how many ppl will pirate the PC version instead of buying the console version is flawed since many console gamers don't use their PCs for gaming,so no point in pirating...
Also, piracy is a part of the entertainment industry for a long time and only way to permanently stop it would be to shut down the entire entertainment industry, but still,it's not a major threat, industry is healthy and profitable, and same goes for the PC.Sure, many will pirate, but profit still gets made, and in the end, that's the most important thing...
PC has larger piracy rate than consoles, its a proven fact, but if the PC is nothing other than a money drain as many try to display it,why would anyone even bother making PC games, especially exclusives?

Piracy is like a virus.
If you leave piracy unchecked long enough, it multiplies and becomes a pandemic, and developers no longer make profit on their works.
You need to combat it while it's still relatively harmless.

I agree, but sadly, most publishers fail miserably at that field...
Ironically, most of their fighting methods do nothing else but encourage it further...
I still say the most efficient way to fight the piracy is to treat the honest and paying consumers with respect, instead of treating them like criminals.
PC piracy is convinient,as you said, and the biggest problem is,most publishers overcomplicate things for honest consumers, instead of making them easy and convinient.Obviously, that does the opposite from what they intended...
Ppl always want to get things for cheap, part of the human nature, but industry is also much to blame for increased piracy rates, due to their various anti-consumer strategies.Gaming is meant to be an enjoyable hobby, and if the industry overcomplicates it,consumer will search for an easier, more convinient method of enjoying his hobby...

one of the most breathtaking games ever created, this and demon's souls make me appreciate video games as an artform.
the game is pretty much a moving picture of elegance, even in its most darkest settings.

picture doesn't do the area justice, but when I first saw it the city in the background of the sunset I was blown away.

It's not an especially good looking game by current gen standards, but it looks decent enough and it's a great game. I'll be picking up a second copy for the PC when it's released.
