Arkham City is excellent. I played Arkham Asylum and Arkham City back to back in 2 days, both for the first time. They were both very amazing games, but I ended up liking Arkham Asylum just a tad bit more. I thought it had better level design, pacing, and it was a bit more structured. Arkham City is definitely a more polished game, and you can notice this through things like voice acting, cutscenes, lip syncing, the little details all come together in AC, but AA just left more of a lasting impression on me.
Definitely play both games, though. They are 2 of the best games this generation.

Well there are also interesting Side Quests in AC, but more importantly, the Riddler trophies and puzzles are probably the very best part in the whole game. It's just all so ingeniously designed. Then of course there are those awesome challenge rooms that test your skills. This game just has pretty much everything.
I probably would have been better off playing a game in between AA and AC, because I was a little Batman'd out by the end of AC after playing the 2 games back to back with hardly any breaks in between.
