Anyone saying GTAIV is just fooling themselves.
4 was easily the least innovative.
San Andreas did wonders to the series. I can only hope they bring it all back for 5.
Its not that GTA4 was not innovative.......... it was just so damn repetitive. Mission variety was like... no variety. And the health system was sh!t. Shooting mechanics were sh!t. I think GTA 5 will be amazing. Why? Because I think that Rockstar has taken some ideas from the mechanics of Red Dead Redemption, and will incorporate it into GTA 5. Make a GTA game with the game mechanics of RDR, then I will love it.Anyone saying GTAIV is just fooling themselves.

LegatoSkyheart
Vice City.NanomageThis is my choice aswell. It has the best soundtrack, atmosphere, and characters IMO.
IV. I much prefer the tone Rockstar's taken with their games this gen.Phoenix534Everyone, since the game came out half a decade ago, has said IV has a "darker tone". I'm playing it and I just don't see it. It's no "darker" than III, VC or SA. All the protagonists have been brutal, remorseless psychopaths, and despite the "fluffier" pop culture surface (IV is just set in a much less candy-coated era), they are all criminals through-and-through, and are just seeking their "place" in a world that eats lesser men for breakfast.

.................. and then GTA 4 took it all away.Kevlar101Yes, and...? SA was the peak of GTA games on the PS2/Xbox. It took two iterations to reach that level. IV was the first step on brand new consoles. You actually expected everything from SA to transition over, even when they had to build an entirely new engine?

How far are you in the game? It gets progressively darker near the end.
4 easily. Best gameplay by a wide margin (even though it's not up to modern TPS/driver standards), crushes the others technically and has the best characters+story. The one I enjoyed the most is Vice City though. Partly because it was the first I played and partly because it had great atmosphere. San Andreas had a ton of content. Problem is almost none of it was that fun and a lot of it was tedious.
[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"]How far are you in the game? It gets progressively darker near the end. ZevianderI was talking about overall tone, including the game world. But I just started doing work for a suit who is connected with a particular person who betrayed me. The game world in each of the GTAs has always been a parody of American culture. I wouldn't call Liberty City dark and gritty, but the story of IV certainly tilts towards that point near the end.

A lot of it has to do with Niko being the darkest character the franchise has ever seen. Finding out about his background is enough.
GTA IV.
Being a New Yorker,I was quite impressed with the attention to detail with the environments, cultures, and overall atmosphere of liberty city.Though,I can understand why the people who enjoyed the features with SA ...would be let down with GTA 4.
