[QUOTE="Zaxro"]As much as I love Mass Efect, it will be pretty hard to convince me that Chrono Trigger isn't the best RPG ever.ZimpanX

you took the words right of my mouth basically

I agree. Still, Mass Effect is one of the best RPGs I have played in years imo.

Well can most of us agree that Mass Effect is better than better than Oblivion? I sure think so. If it wasn't for teh technical issues, I would say that Mass Effect should have gotten 9.5. And Oblivion 8.5.

Mass Effect? Best all time? rofl! I swear, sometimes it seems like everyone here started gaming with the PS2 or 360. Ever hear of Planescape Torment? Chrono Trigger? Xenogears?

Dragon Quest 8 for me, I have FF10 and 12 but Dragon Quest 8 has this charm about it that makes me fall in love with the rich world. Although I do like Fran and Balthier in FF12 best out of all RPG characters... they need a spin off not Vincent.

I've played each of those and I can still see people really enjoying ME enough to place it near the top(if not number one). I swear sometimes people forget what's "best" is subjective.

Great game, not that great though.

I think FF 7, Baldurs Gate 2, Chrono Trigger, etc all are in a much higher league.

Seiken Densetsu 3 was mentioned here. I can say it could have been the greatest SRPG of all time if it was released outside of Japan. The game is sometimes referred to Secret of Mana 2.

I am hoping this game can make it to Wii VC.

I think the best WRPG goes to Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape Torment. Those games are the epitome of role playing. In terms of JRPGs, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is the best.

It'd be pretty hard to do so, considering they'd have to translate it, a feat that is considered godly for importers. And SRPG? Far from it. Very far. It's an action-RPG, like Secret of Mana, Kingdom Hearts, and Paper Mario (to an extent).

Baldur's Gate 2
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 3(6)
Earthbound

all games worthy of best rpg imo. Mass Effect is not; it's a good game, but it's really an incredible scifi story/presentation.

blahzor

Good choices.. Also add Fallout 2, Morrowind, and Neverwinter Nights.

Chrono Trigger. The game is brilliant. Times have changed, and as such, so have gaming standards, but I couldn't imagine anyone playing this(who neverhas)andat least not enjoy itregardlessof age. It's not only my personal best RPG of all time, it's my favorite game of all time. I still have my SNES original all boxed up nice awaiting to be replayed again (I usually go through it once a year, kind of a tradition)

I'm afraid my "Jinxed" trait caused you to have a *critical failure* and mistype. I believe you meant to say Fallout 2 is the correct answer, though I imagine you might have several more critical failures in responding that lead you to type something *other than* "you were right". It's okay, I understand, you should probably restart and spec for higher luck next game, it's a pretty important stat at higher levels.

I still think it's a good part nostalgia, even a return playing nowdays. Nothing wrong with that, it's better to recognize nostalgia exists than pretend it doesn't imho.

And yes I've played both, back then I actually had time to play RPG titles more than once. So I beat SMRPG a few times, and CT enough to earn all it's endings... even replayed the latter again on the PSX despite it's heart breaking load times.

In terms of JRPGs, I loved Breath of Fire III and Xenogears. In terms of Super Mario RPG, good luck. I replayed that recently to see if it was good due to nostalgia and it wasn't, the game still is awesome as hell.

Edit: Also a fan of Illusion of Gaia but another game which I can't stand whcih people love is Secret of Mana. I DON'T doubt it's awesome IF you play with other people, but alone the AI characters are dumb as bricks and it becomes VERY annoying.

ALSO, in terms of CT, I did like only one part/area which was Robo's mission back in 2300.

I'm sorry, the correct answer was Fallout 2. You'd think Mario could help you, but he died *surprisingly quickly* from a crotch shot.

Unless you've played, beaten, replayed, and then free roamed for special encounters in Fallout 2, you are not allowed to nominate *any other RPG*.

1st. Chrono Trigger- it is the most fun to me. Short, but fun. And the most adventurous at that.

2nd. Chrono Cross- not as fun as CT or adventurous for that manner, but it had the best story line in that it kept me guessign until the very end. Even after I beat it I had to read wikipedia in order to fully understand it.

3rd. Too hard for me to say.

Anyways since I am talking about the Chrono series I might as well say it. SQUARE could you please hurry up and finish FFXIII and put some reasonable amount of money, time, and energy into making a third Chrono? Sheesh. The original creators even want to make another one now.

God bless.

it's definitely high on the list but bioware's true masterpiece is still baldur's gate 2.
