Is there a game with a story more in depth, told as well, and as cool as Bioshock? Maybe im missing it but saving the princess, or killing dracula dont have nearly as awesome a story that everyone i think can truly get into as bioshock. Im really sick of every dev hyping up story so much and 99% of them all fail to even match the quality of an average tv show. Anything you can think of that can touch bioshock?

Was going to go into this thread saying bioshock, but you already said it for me.

Mass Effect has quite a good story to itaswell but not quite in depth (literally, lol:P) as bioshock.

that horrible driving part of the game made me so frustrated that i quite and returned the game :(((

I feel bad about it now because i want to play it, but seriously the driving part with the giant snake or whatever coming out form under me and 1 shotting me was not fun. The story did seem genuinely quality up to that point

Best STORY in a SINGLE GAME, Ever?

----------------

I would say Metal Gear Solid 4.

--------------------

Runner Ups :

Metal Gear Solid 1-3 (Such a great story telling series, amazing, set the bar way too high.)

Final Fantasy 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10.

Persona 3

Mass Effect

Bioshock

Knights of the Old Republic

God of War 1

God of War 2

The Entire Legacy of Kain Games (all 5) together are pretty dang Epic.

Deus Ex (JC Denton FTW!)

The gods at Bioware create games just for this purpose ;) Bioshock can't compare to WRPG's like Baldurs Gate, KotOR and Mass Effect imho... Also, Black Isle.

KOTORS story was kinda cool, the gameplay was the real winner in that game for me though, decent twist at the end was nice.

Okay, is this opposite day or something? :P Bioware's games have always been about story over gameplay and graphics.

its much more than that, the atmosphere of the game plays into the story and how it comes to a conclusion in an amazing way, also the subtle hints like blood on the wall saying "would you kindly" the audio logs were played as you played the game aswell, which added to the feeling of living the actualy event instead of seeing a cutscene, and the end with the baseball bat to the dome! it was better than some movies IMO

Nope, and it also manages to completely answer all questions we had from the series. It wasn't as concise as Metal Gear Solid 1 (But close), but MGS4 had a lot of questions to solve before the amazing climax to SNAKE's Saga.

MGS2 was a great game, but yes, the story was unnessarily complex.

someone should splice all the audio transmitions and cutscenes in proper order to tell the whole story from beginning to end, i wonder how long that would be?

Bioshock did have an excellent story, but Mass Effect's is just on a whole differnt level imo. I mean there's the hours of dialogue, codex, 2 spin off books etc.

Just go and look on the Wiki's for both games and it's pretty clear which universe is deeper.

Which was nothing compared to how the exact same thing was done much better in ss2... No seriously they did a very good job.

Right Daedra demons and hellgates is completly generic in medeval rpgs.... Also when mass effect is deathborring the player with dialogues and repettive missions, Oblivion is using epic quests from the beginning such as finding the son of emperor and traveling to cloud ruler temple or closing the first oblivion gate that destroyed kvatch. Allthough i got to agree that it really turns repettive near the end and the ending does suck but : Oblivion sidemissions> mass effect sdemissions.

Not those two things specifically, obviously, but apart from that it's really just another LotR-style fantasy universe (like Mass Effect is another Star Wars-style sci-fi universe). I guess I could agree with Oblivions side quests being better, but that's all.

Despite that Mass Effect had new ideas and a new Universe but not much of thrilling story in it. In kotor however Bioware made a very well designed script with very cool characters, in mass effect they forgot to. Basicly its like making stargate episodes with borring story in every episode, the universe of the series alone is not enough to make the story good, the actual story got to be pretty damn good every episode. Example the witcher has pretty well designed story.

Well you could be playing gothic 2 instead and kill a dragon with your shinny knight armor, which is more generic id say:)

the only problem with it is the exploring barren worlds needs to have more citys and inhabited worlds other than that its all great, i find the characters well designed and interesting to figure out their story (mostly Wrex and the quarian)

As a single game - Planescape : Torment. By far the most engrossing and original story told in a single game. Ever.

As a series - Legacy of Kain. This series is the very definition of epic, and add to that the excellent writing, storytelling, and the best voice acting cast ever to grace a video game series, and its hard not to choose Legacy of Kain as the best storyline in all of gaming.

what was grimm fandango about anyway?

CHRION987

It's a mix of Aztec beliefs and film noir, following the story of reaper Manny Calavera, a travel agent in the 1940s-ish Land of the Dead. By stealing one of his partner's clients, he starts to uncover a web of murder and corruption that may be cheating souls out of their final resting places...and all that. Awesomeness.

Anyway, I'd pick Planescape Torment over that (and everything else). I can't think of another game that's anywhere near as deep or philosophical as that.

*edit* Ah yes, and I really loved the Gabriel Knight trilogy, too.^^

Yeah, driving's not great in the game. But it's worth it to make it through those parts, the story is quite excellent.
