the good news is that buying the game through steam should buypass this rule....

right?

cakeorrdeath

Hopefully. I have it on two computers, but I have not tried a third. I am going to try it later.

If so people should definately get the steam version. Its not like there is any advantage to owning the disk after this development.

I agree. Its too bad they don't tell you this kind of stuff before hand, but they would be insane if they did.

Slight downside of the PC version of Bioshock, you can only ever install it on a computer twice!

That just plain sucks!

Deihmos

You could also add the slightly longer loading times to the downsides.

Does the PC version load longer? I would think it depends on your hard drive speed.

It does. Someone might have it load faster, but so far everyone I know has been saying that it takes a little more time to load. So I guess this downside only applies to me and some other people, not everyone.

Im not sure about this....but since PC games cache....shouldnt they take less time to load over time....modern CPU's even have a cache right on them.

Maybe. I only really noticed it in the beginning. And like people have said it depends on your Harddrive speed so I guess it was not a good thing to word it in the way that I did and make it seem like no one out there could have faster loading times.

hey guys,

first, let me say this. you DO NOT NEED TO USE THE INTERNET EVERY TIME YOU PLAY THIS GAME. it is only the first time.

second, you can uninstall and reinstall this game, and if, by chance, you have 2 computers you want to simultaneously play this game on, you also can do that.

if by some chance you are reinstalling this game without uninstalling it first, a lot, there is a chance you may have to call securom and get a key, or deactivate some older installations.

but if you upgrade your hardware next week, you'll still be able to play the game. if you revamp your system and need to reinstall bioshock, just uninstall it before you go through the overhaul, and then do your reinstall.

calling it "hardware fingerprinting" is a bit alarmist. we do not transmit any of your data to any companies.

really, the only people who will be concerned about any of these security measures are those who are rapidly putting bioshock on many pcs... if you use the game as you normally do, you won't notice this at all.

Think outside the box people. I bought the hard cover copy of the game, and then used that serial to download it over steam. :D. That way, I have a tangible copy, and I can install it as many bloody times as I well please. I did this with almost all my games because my DVD drive hates me.

PC gaming is starting to become a joke. I was about to plunk down 500 bucks on a DX10 card too. Oh well. Glad I purchased a PS3. MaybeI'll purchase a 360 down the line as well.

I think overall, PC gamers got the boot on this one. The settings only go up to "high" and every single PC gamer I have talked to runs it maxed. Even me with my 6800 GS runs the game with just about everything up (at 860 x 600, of course... i dont mind). There's not even a higher setting. It's a shame because it really was designed to cater to the 360 version. :?

Not exactly. See, the game looks great on all settings. But it should have the ability to have higher settings than this. I would rather have a game that both pushes the limits AND is optimized for all players. Like what HL2 did when it was released. But this only does one. Not saying the game was bad, but I'm saying rather it is more designed for the 360 with the PC as an afterthought.

Different sets of people being shafted in each scenario. Best described by the old adage "you can't please everyone"

Also showing the console advantage of having everyone with the same hardware. (something Microsoft is maybe just realising in regard to hard drives)

You're a respected poster here. Surely you can agree that running this game well with all settings (except AA) turned on its highest potential in DX9 with a 6800 GS is kind of rediculous. You seem to think that any negativity towards this game in any aspect is automatically bashing it. I am not bashing it. The statement this game makes in the FPS department is something that thrills me. But don't be a blind fanboy. You know how aggrivating it is when dealing with Halo fanboys, please do not act like one of them. All I am saying is that the game caters to the 360. And, of course, it's gonna sell more on the 360.

No I can't agree with that statement. Want to know why? People always complain about teh OMG HIGH REQUIREMENTS. The second they get a game that is avaialble to a wide spectrum of hardware, with substantial upgrades if you want it, everyone is complaining. I think this is just asd, very sad.

Thats not exactly true.. Firstly did you bother to go into the INI settings file? Most games have advanced graphic options you can enable from there that don't show up on th egames options.. Secondly we have no idea if future patchs or user mods will increase graphics more..

I dont think you quite get me. When HL2 was released, it didn't require an upgrade. It looked good across the board. Check. Bioshock does that and does it well. But, at the time for people who had the higher hardware, it looked even better. Check for DX10, dash for DX9. In DX9 mode, a mid range card will run it maxed. Thats a huge gap. In my oppinion, it shouldn't be there. Am I complaining? Depends on your definition.

The vast majority of tweakers have moved on to DX10 anyway. I don't see what there is to complain about. The PC version looks substantially better than the xbox version, AND can be ran on a myriad of hardware.

I still disagree. But you know what? It really doesn't matter. IMO, Bioshocks strengths surpass it's failures, and I think we can both agree on that one ;)

Used PC games (with this 2 installs crap) are going to take a nose dive.

I'm glad I made the switch long ago back to consoles. This is just insane now. PC gaming just got a whole lot worse.

P.S.

Good score. To bad we will never know if it was 8.8 or a 9.2... Or some where in between.

people are still thinking bioshock will go to the ps3? it was announced as a microsoft exclusive, so unless microsoft buys out sony then no. the chances of final fantasy, killzone, dmc, going to the 360 are better. infact the chances of god of war going to the 360 are better than the ps3 getting bioshock. ms has a very deep wallet.

I got the game today by Fedex, and I'm really amazed at how immersive the game is. What's more, me being a big fan of vintage music, listening to *full* songs of the likes of the Inkspots brings me much pleasure.

Very impressed overall.

I went to EB Games today to buy Bioshock, and it was sold out.

I specifically said in OT a few weeks ago that I wouldn't pre-order it because it would never sell out. I am officially eating my words.

Slight downside of the PC version of Bioshock, you can only ever install it on a computer twice!

That just plain sucks!

smokeydabear076

You could also add the slightly longer loading times to the downsides.

What's the problem with the PC loading times? Maybe it's because I have a quad core, but they weren't at all noticeable to me. Literally, I never even once thought of the loading times during play. In fact so far I think I've only had one or two actually loading screens in-game, both which took around 30 seconds at the most, and the quick saves and quick loads were the only other loading I ever did and they go extremely fast for me (like 3-4 seconds).

So what's this "loading times" issue I keep hearing about? Is it really that bad if your processor isn't quick? Even then, how bad can it be when the real loading screens in-game are spread out so far in between?

Slight downside of the PC version of Bioshock, you can only ever install it on a computer twice!

That just plain sucks!

You could also add the slightly longer loading times to the downsides.

It is not a big deal, it is not as bad as other games like Oblivion 360.

I have a realllly quick processor. (Pentium D 945) The loading at the verry begining (one time thing) is reaaallly long. Like Call of Juarez long. Like, go grab some choco-bars and water from the grocery store and go over to a friend's house to watch trainspotting long. >_> After that looooong loading screen its smooth as butter though. Its no where near as bad as the 40 minutes it took NWN2 to load for me on DVD.

Yeaaah, lord knows what it was, and it never got fixed either. It worked when I got the CD version though. But man, that 40-45 minute wait was crazy.

40 minutes? Haha, wow. Yeah, I haven't played NWN2 myself, but have heard some pretty bad things about it as far as its optimization goes.

Bioshock for PC is pretty much flawless, IMO. All they really need to do is fix the widescreen issue and add the option to force anti-aliasing, but both of these are purely aesthetic issues that would make the game look even better than it already does. It doesn't really need any gameplay enhancements, though I'm sure we'll see some mods out there that add a death penalty, or whatnot. Not that I think it really needs it.

I just hope both of those things (widescreen fix + AA) are possible, because if they are we'll probably see patches for them, if not from the devs themselves then from the PC gaming community (who are certainly capable enough).

This game is nothing short of brilliant...the sound, the visuals, little touches here and there...it's stunning. I almost feel bad for the splicers sometimes. :P

Just picked this bad boy up. Took me three tries to find it. Sold out at first two places. Time to party.

One minor complaint: Capped at HIGH!? I have a GTX, I want Ultra. lol. The game still looks amazing with Dx10.

Out of interest, how many games have scored 9 since the new review system?
