even if this game will dominate world of warcraft in any way possible, people still will play world of warcraft more, because casual gamers dominate on those servers, and casual gamers tend to play with other casual gamers, as long as there is no massive movement, wow will still dominate for the coming years.

TOR is actually going to be extremely casuals from what I've read about the game.

Probably not. But I hope it's as good as wow in terms of content and polish.

Very different in terms of content. I do believe it will be polished though. They are taking their time with it and they do not announce a feature unless they know it will be 100% in the game.( MYTHIC :( )

Yea mythic screwed up big time and let way too many blatant imbalances ship in a pvp oriented game...

Warhammer is way better now and has a stable sub base (300-400k) but as soo as I saw the TOR Decieved trailer and found out that Bioware was making it I instantly knew that it was my new home lol

Lol. I doubt it will get 1/10 the userbase as wow.

nhh18

I think it will have more than 600,000 subs initially, so your point is moot.

Maybe all time? Possibly. But 600,000 yearly. No way.

nah..initialy it won't have problems with having even 2mln. Warhammer managed to have close to 1mln. The challenge will be to keep them from leaving the game. Right now Warhammer has about 300K afterall. OldRepublic has a good chance, great setting, one that's not fantasy based, good team behind it. It won't challenge WoW, but if Bioware plays their cards right they could look at 1-2mln of constant subcribers

cant see it beating WoW, but a stable (meaning 3-4 years life scale) second place position is very likely IMO.

I don't think we'll be seeing any game surpass WoWs peak subscription numbers, but I do think that TOR, along with other strong new IPs such as Aion, FFXIV, The Star Trek MMO, and DC's MMO could very well start snagging away subscriptions from BLizzard in short order. WoW's graphics are really showing their age, and many of the stronger MMOs are doing something many of the recently released MMOs have not done: Create their own unique styles of play, as opposed to copying as many aspects of WoW as they can without getting sued. Most of the people I know from my time on WoW aren't opposed to finding a new game to play, in fact many have tried. But when your choices are composed primarily of WoW clones, you might as well play the one that does WoW style gameplay the best - and that's WoW. These new games are carving their own style out, and their engines reflect the enormous advances in graphics in the past 5 years. Maybe they'll provide gamers with real alternatives, instead of more of the same.

I doubt it. Unless Bioware completly overhauls and refines MMORPGs like Blizz did when it brought out WOW, then it isn't going to happen.

It won't kill WoW. What is SW:TOR anyway? the 10323408millionth SW game? SW might a couple of million subscribers but not the same number as WoW, not only did WoW start earlier, it also came from a good fresh franchise (not like Star Wars). Besides TOR might suck as I'm pretty sure most people would want lightsabers.

If this plays out like guildwars, how u can go out and adventure by yourself accept only on some missions this game will be GOLD..... If it goes the WoW way,(like swg tried to..) this game will more then likely fail....

I'm sorry, but full voice overs mean little. It might impress people at first, but soon enough they'll just be skipping all the talking to get to the next quest.

Also, the 4th pillar stuff sounds really cool, but what about the endgame. Once the storyline is done and all that's left is gameplay, what's going to differentiate it from the rest of the pack?

This will do ok but I doubt it will get the numbers that WoW does.

Star Wars doesn't have the pull people think it does - look at SWG - not exactly a record breaker - and with WoW it was more about the game play and word of mouth than the Warcraft brand once it went past a couple of million.

What made WoW a phenomenom was it's heart and polish and appeal to a mass market as well as being able to be played on a nuts and bolts pc. It's too early to know if SW:TOR ticks all the boxes yet.

Don't get me wrong, it looks great and I can't wait to play it but there's so much we don;t know about it yet.

Love it or hate it WoW is a phenomenom and in a sphere all of it's own. Maybe MMO's will not touch those dizzy heights again but if one could my money would be on Blizzards new MMO they have under wraps - not Star Wars.

There are ALOT of Star Wars fans out there and I'm sure alot of them play WoW right now, and I'm sure alot will leave WoW to play this game, but will that be enough to take WoW down? I honestly do not know, only time will tell.

At this point, WoW's community alone brings in more players. Imagine you want to play a MMORPG. Only time for one in your life, and your buddies play WoW. Which one do you choose? This is not to say no one will play Star Wars, since it will probably be great and there are also a ton of SW fans, but don't expect it to take off the same way WoW did.

Well The Old Republic isnt gonna annhilate the lore like Blizzard did with wow so thats already a + in my book. That CGI movie got me so excited for The Old Republic, and is making the waiting unbearable. It wont kill wow because the9 year old night elf rogues named Legolas or Legolazzz will keep playing it, but im sure The Old Republic will have alot more quality players as opposed to WoW's 90% garbage 10% decent playerbase.

Your so far in denial its laughable, heres a reality check, 99% of an MMO is about the gameplay/grind/PvP/PvE, not story or concequences that happen once... so enjoy your little dialogue gimmick while it lasts, if the core of the game is average then the game is no matter how much "Presentation" is thrown into it. Gimmick Gimmick Gimmick and you always buy into it.

content was ruined because the majority of players got dumber, and dumber. EQ did the same thing with EQ2, and i think more people play the original EQ then EQ2. Although i blame SOE for destroying EQ2. They attempted to do the same with original EQ.

Have they come out and stated you can't skip dialogue or are you making assumptions? Maybe it's just me, but full voiceovers for an MMO just aren't a big selling point for me. It's nice to have I guess, but it it really going to be something that makes people quit other MMOs for.

I really want the game to be good as I'm a huge fan of both Bioware and the Star Wars universe, but until I see how they are going to tackle endgame I'm keeping my hopes in check.

SOE destroys every MMO it touches. EQ2, Planetside, SWG. All were great with so much potential and just got overhauled into crap. One of the greatest things about TOR is SOE has nothing to do with it.

I was going to rage at Birdy, but if I get modded again I think I may get banned.

Rage away, you know I'm right. I guess my idea of a Massivly Multiplayer Online RPG is differnt to you peoples, because I would rather a player run world with greater interaction than pathetic B Grade movie style plots with optional dialogue  ... oh well.

I wont rage, but I do picture you as a kid who started with WoW or Runescape. May not be true though.

If WoW was my first I wouldnt have this mind set, infact I'd have your very mindset... where the world is run by the NPCS and the developers hand. which I dont, dont get me wrong, its a step foward, but its just an aesthetic step foward, alone its nothing.

That dev diary meant absolutely nothing, typical masculin lines, generic star wars characters which will not doubt be the majority, talking talking talking... I can choose to a kill an NPC, fantastic, that means most of the gameworld is no doubt going to be instanced right? *or* you can only participate with people far and few between. My point still stands aswell, where is the *actual* combat shown in any detail? or the "living worlds" feature set, because scripted dialogue, instanced stories or hell any story that ends, isnt a living world. What do you think lures people to MMORPGs hmm? "story?" .. no ... its still a completely different genre and labeled so, character building, stats padding, competitive gaming vs other players is the lure, not being able to kill some NPC and say "oh I killed him... but yea end game all its done is raise my dark side metre lolololol".

Only quests are instanced. They are called flashpoints. We will have other normal MMO suff but they are keeping their lips sealed for now. One Bioware employee said that they don't want Blizzard to pull a stunt like they did to Mythic. (lake wintergrasp)

Not a chance. WoW is far too big to brought down by anything other than itself. Seriously, the only time WoW is going to be killed, is when the content dries up, and Bliz move on.

Bioware already has end game planned out and have been asking the community for suggestions. They gave an example about one of the ideas they had and asked the community about what mechanics they liked. Beyond that another things people are skipping is that fact that each class has it's own unique quest line. If it were that way in WOW I'd have an alt of every class, but doing the same quest over and over is stupid and boring, which is why blizzard has gone all out to make levelling easier and faster without actually just handing over a high level character. Also the lack of focus on arena type combat (I hope) will make pvp more dynamic and fun and we won't have to worry about miniscule detail number 1000 that is making X comp overpowered... and the game can also be balanced more easily. Bioware already has the tier 1 pvp ending game rewards made, so I don't think we have to worry about whether there will be end game or not.
