If you mean revolutionary as in turning it cyber punk and giving everyone stupid hair styles and making all the men look like girls, then sure.

I admit i'm biased, i can't stand FF, but from those i know who do, and have played them all, they all cite 4, 6 and 10 as being better than 7. 7 is just the one most people played, that doesn't make it the best or in anyway of need of a remake. If anything Square should focus on something new.Snagal123

Each Final Fantasy game is distinct in its own way. In fact, one of the reasons FF13 is reviled by so many FF fans is because it strays so far from what's been traditional in FF games. Being technomagic and having stupid hairstyles has always been an FF staple, which borrows from the anime cultural roots. So is the androgyny. Methinks that if you don't know anything about something, best to shut the hell up.

It is nice that anime is being more accepted in the Western mainstream, but still culturally-ignorant attitudes about anime and androgyny still persist. There is also xenophobia among Westerners on things like androgynous-looking male characters as if it offends their Western conception of masculinity. The Western world is not the center of the universe, and cultures have different conceptions of masculinity which may be at opposite ends.

On topic";

I thought that Westerners claim that we are more open-minded than the Japanese on video games, but I personally feel that Bioware is showing some Western gaming industry arrogance (which is aplenty as I have seen) by judging developers from another culture who see things differently. Instead of judging the developers of Japanese RPSs, why Bioware did not judge its fellow Western developers of RPGs first?

I still liked Demon Souls and Resonance of Fate, IMO they were as awesome as the WRPG he listed.

I do agree with him to a certain extent, but I think he's generalizing a little too much aka arrogant.

I have to say i agree. I completed Tales of vesperia and while it being a pretty good game and I never ever play jrpgs it still felt like 'been there, done that' for some odd reason

A remake of the most overrated FF game?I don't think they will be that worried.

Snagal123

Did you actually played FF7 on its first day of release or not?!! Because if you did , then you can understand why ff7 was truly revolutionary., If not then we dont have much to discuss here

If anything Square should focus on something new.

youre wrong in EVERYTHING..... That haircut you talking about is TRADITIONAL ANIME ( 100% japanese style haircut ) that there are in mangas / anime since 70s ( if you know dragonball?? 80s ) Now clearly you dont know what youre talking about here. FF7 was THE revolutionary graphically , artistically AND its mechanics that made it TOP notch. Never before weve seen such epic summons , skills , etc etc. Story might not be the best there might be , but villain ( sephiroth ) along with Jenova incident was one of a hell interesting and director did a brilliant job with whole thing. Now if it cyber punk or not has nothing to do with what FF7 brought on its time , when all other JRPGS felt like tiny little games. FF7 was a masterpiece. And you cant compare FF10 , a PS2 release and some years after 7 with 7.... Because simply you cant do that. 10 was fantastic FF game. FF7 was fantastic AND revolutionary and brought JRPGs to a whole new lvl , noone saw or experienced before... Its not only about sales... Go google , youll see for yourself... Now if someone started FF series with 10 and beyond , simply you cant see anything good in FF7. But 90% of the people played FF7 when it first released... wowed 10 times per second and sucked in its story. Not to say cloud and sephiroth are now all time favorite characters for many of gamers. How Ff7 was bad a god knows..

Oh, man, the nerve they have to say that.

Dragon Age is practically Baldur's Gate in 3D with a bit more voice acting. And it's HIDEOUS. It's so far behind that I had to launch Guild Wars because I had the suspicion that a 5 year old MMO looks a lot better than it and it turned out I was right ...

I've always, ALWAYS preferred WRPG's, hands down. But Final Fantasy 7 and Lost Odyssey are true classics.

You'd have to pay me to play something like Persona or anything heavily Japanese localised.

Heaven forbid you get exposed to something that isn't from somewhere in the Midwest. For all their talk of globalism, Western gamers, I've found, are highly provincial in their gaming. Only the most generic Japanese stuff ever makes it to Western shores and even then they get blasted for being too Japanese. A really Japanese game would be well-nigh incomprehensible to Western gamers, I think.

Demon's Souls last year goty. No all Japanese devs are doing stupid emo spiked hair games. From Software is one and I'm sure there are others. And lastly, If I were bioware, I'd kept my mouth shut, because their last game was culprit of dividing their very own fanbase, because they wanted to cat more casuals.

Japanese Rople Playing Game, there are many sorts of them, strategy, action and the most common formula for them bruned into the collective mind of gaming is the turn based combat system kind of RPG in a linear as possible campaign :P, any RPG made in japan is a JRPG, Bioware however, disregards series like FF as RPGs altogether, there is heated debated over the definition of RPG I dont want to engage into myself.

I don't play JRPGs since I have an inherent distaste for them, hence why I was turned off by this game since ... forever; of course, when explained to the user why I was turned off, I was berated (in a kind manner, of course) -- in vivid and detailed manner -- how Demon's Souls is not even close to being a JRPG. Just because it was made in Japan just not mean it's a typical JRPG. I'll warn you if foxhound_fox sees this thread, you'll be in a heap of a discussion about the matter.

On the other hand, their Mass Effect series sucked IMO. I think JRPGs are still better in music and storyline, while WRPGs are more sandbox fun. In the end, JRPGs are the ones that give me a lasting experience.

I wouldn't reply honestly, Im not interested in that sort of discussion. I edited my last post right before you quoted me :P, I understand Jrpg as Role Playing Games made in Japan, thats it, I know the picture most people have of them, wait until the bar is filled so your character can attack again in the mean time its the enemy's turn :P

jrpgs try to change in order to be liked by reviewers in the west.thats their bigest fault. jrpgs should stay jrpgs, turned based combat with great story ,worldmap, towns etc.no need to casualize them or put marcus fenix as the main character.

jrpgs are failing now because of that change.lost odyssey is the only typical jrpg this gen, with tales of vesperia/star ocean 4 being action rpgs and valkyria chronicles/disgaea being srpgs.

i dont even rate ffxiii as rpg...its bad ,better than xii ,but still bad.no excuse for the development time they had.

still who are bioware to talk with their casualised shooter,me2 is an rpg ?yeah right.....

so in the end give me old school jrpgs, typical turned based story driven rpgs, anyone wonder why they are doing so well in handhelds? because they stayed the same with ps1 era. thats the answer...

JRPG's only have to do with where the game is made.

If this wasn't a case than most JRPGs would actually be WRPGs, since 80% of them are Wizardy clones.

I wouldn't call it a WRPG either. I'm sick of region-specific prefixes though. Personally, I cIassify them as action, turn-based, strategy, etc.

Silliness, pure and simple.

It would be different if he were saying that JRPGs just haven't blown EVERYTHING else away in terms of polish and production value, as they have in the past, but to go to a core pillar like design & structure is absurd because it gets me thinking, and when I get to doing that I start pondering what changes to structure and design W-RPGs have brought this generation, and it becomes clear they draw the big null. The design and structure of Fallout 3 and Oblivion is soooo much different than Morrowind and Daggerfall, right? Bethesda put out a game at the beginning of this generation that drew in more casual players than usual for an WRPG owing to an intense battle system, and because of that MS and EA have been willing to give Bioware the big bucks, allowing them to make prettier games with more and better V\O work, but in terms of structure, I don't see it at all. Oh, wait now I get it, Paragon and Renegade are sooo much different from Light Side and Dark Side or Low Path and High Path. Sounds like someone has been sitting on too many developer panels, and he got himself a bit of a big head. W-RPGs have made their games more action-like, hidden more and more of their rule sets, and their surprised their drawing bigger crowds? I have truly loved Bioware's output this generation, but this is nonsense.

Yes, there are 5 outstanding WRPGs this generation. Here are 25 great JRPGs:

Tales of Vesperia, The World Ends With You, Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Mario & Luigi 2, Mario & Luigi 3, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 3, Persona 4,Rogue Galaxy,Odin Sphere,Dragon Quest 9, Etrian Odyssey II, Tales of Eternia, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Demon's Souls, Monster Hunter Tri, Rune Factory Frontier, Pokemon (series), Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, Jeanne D' Arc, Disgaea 3, ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat

If it seems like a lot of those are handheld titles, umm....where do you think JRPG makers have been doing their work?

And so the pot called the kettle black.

WAIW
Yeah that was what I was thinking. Ever since Baldur's Gate 2 they made a dumbed down pause and play Star Wars RPG for consoles (KotOR), a crappy beat'em up mixed with an RPG (Jade Empire), a crappy TPS in the form of an RPG (Mass Effect), and a watered down Baldur's Gate 2 (Dragon's Age) Why are action games with poor action mixed with shallow RPG elements are so popular? (FAllout 3, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fable). Could you imagined how critically acclaimed a game would be if they did both halves well?

Man! Bioware has always been admired by me, specially for Baldur's Gate, and lately Dragon Age but... no doubt the FF series has meant a better experience to me. JRPGs might need to evolve a bit but please, not like Bioware's last shooter... oh! I mean RPG.

Demon soul's was goty last year at least gamespot. They are hardly complacent. There is just unwarranted prejudice toward ff13 by the media. Bioware is way hypocritcal here. Valkryia chronicle, demon soul's, and resonance of fate are 3 games with brilliant fighting mechanics.

Vandal says: Bioware has abandoned what it means to make a good RPG game and has degraded the genre into an action oriented casual mess.

Bioware never made brilliant games. People just have obsession with RPGs so the fault of their games aren't highlighted. Baulder Gates 1 and 2 were their only excellent games. Most of their games are great but not fantastic (Mass Effect 2 was awesome game but way overrated).
