Im not talking about movies...im talking about the players themselves. Walmart never carries the top notch players, merely mediocre ones. Like who would buy a TV at walmart unless theyre piss poor? Seriously.
Uptown
Â
Im guessing the SONY Bravia is a mediocre TV, then.
Â
However, even if you were right (You're not, you're horribly wrong), there are MANY MORE low-and-mid income households that cannot or will not pay $1200+ for an HDTV and prefer a cheap alternative than there are people who go to Sony ****to get overcharged on the plasma they just loaded into their Cayenne.
So, your statement basically disproves your argument. Well done.
[QUOTE="tacubano"]HD-DVD VS BLUE-RAY stand alone ... is not math problem, 1000 dollar machine vs a 300 or 200 one that is EXACTLY THE SAME IN PICTURE QUALITY...how is stupid enough to pay 1000 bucks for a movie player....i heard in the av forums that HD-DVD is now beating blue-ray...because movies like the matrix trilogy and the LOTR trilogy are coming and because of the low sales of the pstriple.ShockerD19
matrix and lotr are coming to bluray also. and bluray is currently selling almost 3 times as much as hd-dvd.
Â
also, best buy is the largest electronics retailer in america, people go there for electronics, not walmart.Â
While I do like Best Buy it is nowhere near what Wal-Mart puts out in sales and that includes electronics.  Market value for Wal-mart is $205 Billion while best buy is only $22 billionif it means a cheaper alternative and  something that performs better then im all for it....
its just childish fanboys here that back the other format so much because sony use it...
to me someone doing something like that so much needs to take a look else where in there lives..
sorry but its true.

why would anyone want to get an HD-DVD player anyway when it doesnt have the content? all of the recent big movies are all from companies that support bluray. last year the ones that did the best in box office were sony, disney, and fox, all of which are bluray exclusive. unless you really like universal's catalog, there isnt that much of a reason to pick HD-DVD over bluray.ShockerD19But this year it's the other guys' turns, with the fifth Harry Potter movie, a re-release of LoTR, etc. What do you think will happen if they come out at the same time as a $200 HD player? Remember, it was at $200 that DVD took off, HDTVs are starting to hit the $500 butter zone, and the analog cutoff is less than two years out.
BTW, I bought my Magnavox DVD+R recorder at Wal-Mart, thank you very much. Most reliable recorder I've had.Â
And Universal has some good movies, too, like the Back to the Future trilogy. And what about Paramount? They seem to lean more towards HD than BluRay.Â

Honestly, I think this may be a nail in the coffin. 360 already has a larger userbase. And now WalMart is backing HD DVD? That's huge. Everybody shops at WalMart. People going in there for Cheetos and hairspray will likely walk out with the latest Martin Lawrence crapfest on HD DVD for $11.88. And they always have stacks of DVDs by the checkout to tempt people.
Also has anyone noticed how prices end in .99 everywhere except WalMart, where they end in .88? Know why? They're Nazis. ;) Seriously.Â

I've never been inside a Wal Mart in my life
Hey this is a quote from an English translation of the Chinese press release. Still no official word on this deal from Wal Mart though but it appears they are in fact talking about HD-DVD.
"Deng Hongmo Kyrgyzstan also mentioned that Blue HD DVD Player for the core of high capacity, high definition, high-resolution vision. images can be more realistic, more beautiful images. 。Its advantages are easier to maintain compatibility with existing DVD discs, and can continue using existing DVD production equipment. facilitate the expansion of the distance between lens and CD, no CD-creator. DVD transition from the existing to substantially reduce the cost of HD-DVD, Disks made by the manufacturers of DVD to HD DVD at the cost of conversion to an absolute minimum., In addition, although smaller capacity HD DVD movies recorded, but proof, decontamination capability, without vacuum. Therefore the production process easier and less costly."
The fact he says its an easy transition from DVD pretty much proves he's talking about HD-DVD because Blu-ray requires all new equipment. But once again I must say that nothing has been confirmed by WalMart.

So , HDDVD doesnt required new equipment? How come we have to buy HDDVD players then?Â

ya seriously lolÂ
When it comes to replicating and authoring the discs with HD-DVD you can use MOSTLY the same equipment you used for DVD but Blu-ray requires entirely new equipment. That's what the Chinese rep in the article is talking about. Its a rough translation but I figured most people would already know that about HD-DVD compared to Blu-ray considering I EXPLAINED THAT EARLIER IN THIS THREAD. RFLMAOBBQ11!!

Thank you for clearing that up for me :D Was confused a bit.Â
Goodluck to them. All I can say is if the PS3 can sell 3 million at its price tag, hd-dvd doesnt stand a chance. Because Of the big franchise games for the PS3, those alone will sell the system. Sony will be ok, hd-dvd may have sold 100,000 hd-dvds for the month but didnt sony sell 130,000 ps3's for NPD numbers? Also remember, sony is still a sleeper in japan that is ready to explode anytime soon in japan once a few games hits japan to there likings.squallff8_fan
Actually, HD-DVD players sold 100,000 so far. As in it took them nearly a year to sell 100,000...Â

Because regular DVD player aren't capable of outputing 1080p... not that hard to get. HD-DVD players have better hardware that is capable of decoding 1080p VC-1 (and other fromat) streams and they are capable of decoding HD audio that normal DVD player would never be able to do...
[QUOTE="peacebringer"]want defective items due to poor handling of merchandise? When they load the trucks they put everything on the ground , sometimes you'll see a Weightset on TV's and DVD players and boxes dented and torn., or my favorite when the bottles of Handsoap spill on the TV boxes this is the funniest.that really doesnt deter from the fact that wal mart has a huge influence on the merchandising industry just by how popular of a place it is. i'm not a fan of wal-mart, haven't walked into one in years and i could care less who wins the next gen dvd format. i'm not sticking to either atm until one wins.

Somebody tell walmart that Disney, Fox, and Sony aren't supporting HD DVD. Thats alot of movies you can't get on HDDVD.

One of the nice things about HD-DVD is that you will occasionally get some titles on HD-DVD a month before Blu-Ray because of manufacturing issues.Somebody tell walmart that Disney, Fox, and Sony aren't supporting HD DVD. Thats alot of movies you can't get on HDDVD.

What is the brandnames of the cheaper HD-DVD players?TekkenMaster606
All the HD DVD players from Walmart will be top brands.
Sorny
Magnet Vox
and Panafonics.
Â
IMO this actually inadvertently will help the PS3. I see Sony be more willing to make a price cut sooner (because we all know the production costs on PS3s are dipping dramatically right now). Therefore they would cut the price to get more PS3s out there to coutneract the extra amount of HD DVD players that will be sold. MikeE21286If competing companies keep slashing prices, how is this bad?

oh you forgot Durabrand it's a real brand. i saw one one time with a TV on top the DVD player was so crushed and i asked the Supervisor should i put this back on the shelf and shaked the box it sounded like a maraqua. He said sure. lol he was joking though. This should be interesting. Because the electronics department at my local Wal-Mart is a wreck, constantly. Uninformed employees, out of stock all the time. I bet half of those players on the shelf will be someone's previously returned goods.

"This DVD player don't look no better than my reg'lar DVD player on my Sylvania TV..." "What's SD, HD and ED TV? Erectile Dysfunction Television?"

i so love how fanboys contradict them selves on a daily basis. i love it how fanboys been saying their is a small percent of HDTV's owners and that HDTV's wont be selling well for next year or so. then all of sudden they are like Bam blu ray is going to be de throned by walmart and HD DVD. well fanboys since your logic states that hardly any one owns a HDTV, and are selling poorly. how and the hxx is cheap hd dvd players are going to de throne Blu ray?
There is a reason why i have not bought a hd dvd add on for my 360. that is because of ps3. ever since it hit hte market here in the US, the blu ray software sales have been giving a beat down on HD dvd software. no matter how you want ot spin it, blu ray is going ot keep out selling hd dvd software due to the ps3. and guess what , those movies companies that back up blu ray are going to continue making money, and blu ray format is going to continue out selling hd dvd on a monthly basis.
but like i said, i just love how fanboys contradict them selves on a daily basis.

What I think is interesting is the complete denial from the BD fanboys.
There has been a slow progression in the denial since the announcement.
First it is "this could be a BD player".
Second "it's nobody will buy them at Wallmart".
Then it's "who cares it's "only" 2 million players".
Now it seems every BD fan seems to think the BDA will just match prices.
Well lets look at the price issue.
Since the launch HD DVD has been cheaper $500 vs $1000+.
Right now there is the discontinued 1st gen samsung and discontinued PS3 20GB for $500. The next low cost option is the PS3 60GB at $600. Every standalone BD player is $800-$1200.
This fall Summer is launching their 2nd gen player for $600 so that brings the cost of entry in BD world from $600 to $600. Sony expects street pricing to be around $500 by Christmas. Sony has stated they have no plans for a $300 player in 2007
Right now you can get into HD DVD at multiple price points all of which are lower cost than BD.
HD-D1 - $300
HD-A2 - $330
HD-A20 - $380
HD-XA2 - $520
Despite this there has been no downward pricing on BD players. BD can't even make an entry level $400 player but suddenly in a few months when entry level HD DVD players are $200-$300 they will suddenly cut their prices by over 60%? Please.
Starting this summer and moving into Christmas HD DVD will be $200-$500 and BD will be $500 - $1000.
Wallmart calculates the value of every square footage of retail space. They take gross profit of an item and divide it by the sq footage in their stores devoted to it. They are not interested like most B&M stores on the return on capital but more so on the return on space. That's why you see items like $40 DVD players given good locations. Despite the gross margins of likely $6 they sell enough to make the profit / sq foot very high. If they are buying 2 million players then they anticipate being able to move them quickly.
If Walmart sells 1 million + players per year the studios will have to listen. Wallmart will want movies to sell to those customers buying these players. Since Walmart owns about 2/5 of the DVD retail market in the US the studios will listen very closely. When Walmart tells Disney we sold $1.2 billion of your product last year and now we would like you to consider going format neutral so we both can sell a couple hundred million worth of HD material for you it will at least require some high level discussions.
Don't think for a second they wont throw their weight around. Reduce inventory just slightly give another product better positioning and they could cause Disney's expected revenue for a week to move down 5%. Without alienating their customers it is a not so subtle way of showing the studios who is really in charge.m3Boarder32

Who are these fanboys? SDTV fanboys? WTF do SDTV fanboys have to do with the format war??
If you wanna talk about the format war I don't think it much of a war its pretty much blu-ray beating HD-DVD by 9:1 theres over 3million blu-ray players just counting PS3s sold and then the stand-alone players and blu-ray sales are killing HD-DVD.Kimahriii
BD movies are outselling HD-DVD movies 1.2:1...Oh knows, the beatdown.......It's like a 10% lead..
