Capcom Promises: No More Racist Games!

There were some that perceived Capcom's Resident Evil 5 to be a racist game. Not in intent, perhaps, but certainly in its imagery and execution. Well, Capcom have certainly learned their lesson!

Capcom's senior PR manager Melody Pfeiffer has told Gamasutra "Since the RE5 controversy, we have become much more aware of how important it is that we are part of the asset creation process early on so that we are able to have a say in the end product". By "we" she means Capcom USA, so someone from outside Japan can step in and say "uh, no, this will displease people".

"We are also designing a lot of our own assets from this side of the pond, so that we are able to make strategic pieces of content that make sense for our market".

"We are working really closely with our producers in Japan to construct these materials for the West and they are open more then ever to hearing our thoughts and ideas for assets."

Anyway to add value, I personally use the idea of more games being set in Africa (so long as its an actual proper depiction of the continent but anyways) but RE5 was like so bland and not Africa like at all. Hell after you get outta the slums its just stereotypical Africa perspective. It was boring that said I really did like RE5.

I really don't get you guys are on about. While I agree that people are too sensitive of course no one cares if Leon is shooting spanish people, its Leon and it really was like a white US person shooting evil white spanish people. It was basically the least contorversial thing capcom could do. Like dead Memories said, Zack and Wiki is more controversial than RE4 :P

Seriously,I would love for more games to explore other regions of the world and cool cultures and perspectives but RE5 just wasn't good at it at all.

Wait, so, making an African village have literal swarms of Asians, Hispanics, and Whites to go along with the occasional black person is still too racist for CAPCOM? Sweet Jesus, those blatant attempts at political correction were bad enough in RE5 (Seriously, it was prevalent enough that it killed the mood for me and made me wonder just HOW so many non-blacks happened to be in this town when **** hit the fan), so I don't even want to know how they'll handle future titles.

Problem is that Capcom have white peeps as the stars of their games... from now on, they should use mexicans. No one complains if mexicans kill black peeps. Just make sure there are no white folks for those mexicans to kill, Capcom.

Everyone knows RE5 was'nt racist so I don't see the big deal with this at all. Anyone who thinks it was racist needs a reality check...

The best depiction of other cultures will probably come from people close to said cultures. I agree, america is played out and we need diversity. I just think RE5 sucked at it, (well actually the first village part was the most realistic even if it was basly portrayed). I like RE5 though, I thought it was a good game with some stupid design flaws.

When did it become ok to kill caucasians, but when that caucasian is anything else, it's blatent racism?

No offense but if people don't "actually" understand why it annoys people (whether that annoyance is reasonable or not is another story) theyprobably should avoid that route. Its not a good argument.

I like the game as co op. But it is soooo co op focused that the experience is trash is you play by yourself (which I never did) Shoot walk would have flowed better but Cap would need to do some reprogramming because the game has deliberate design around stop and shoot. the tank controls really do make it flow less smooth. I wanna see how it plays on move though because RE4Wii was able to kick off some of the clummsy nature with a more fluid aiming system.

I don´t see even a tiny bit of racism in RE5.

People worry too much these days.

I love how we are all making the basic silly race card why is it okay one way but not the other thing. Come on people, we ALL know why it causes a **** storm one way but not the other. Can we stop playing dumb?

As for RE5, even if it is a terrible terrible depiction of Africa and not racist at all, it is smart for Capcom to be careful on how they approach this in the future. Not for the "creative" integrity of game but rather for their games reputation. No one wants there game to be labeled "oh wasn't that the racist game that caused a huge stink?" I sure as hell know I wouldn't want my games legacy to be that. And clearly RE5 was not affected since its pretty much sold on par if not better thaa 4.

The only people that are racist are the ones that notice these things and get offended by them, the rest of us are past caring.

You can't put a token black guy, you can't have either too much or too few. There's just no way to please people, it's lose-lose every time.

Maybe Japanese developers need not deal with sensitive assumptions about the color of anothers skin color?
