Cliffard made some amazing contributions to gaming and innovation in the industry. He quite often imparted sage knowledge, sometimes not without controversy. He was an industry leader of game design and I'm sad he's leaving but wish him all the best.

He is quite a funny character, quoted as saying such unprofessional things as:

"Mark my words, those particles are going to be whored by developers," enthused Bleszinski.

He was also famous for having a point of difference withsome reviewers, as they gave gears 3 a lower score than gears 2, and CliffyB was adament that GeOW 3 was simply better in every measurable way.

Certainly a colourful character.

Of course, but Epic is first and foremost a middleware engine developer. Its what keeps them on the map. His role at Epic is a big one, but calling him the backbone of the company is a bit much.

I also have mad respect for him since at E3 he speaks freely and isn't a teleprompted drone like every other speaker

Possibly from this episode of the Bonus Round? He states he was disappointed with Uncharted 3. However, he then stated he loved Uncharted 2 and that it was his game of the year for the year it was released. How that translated to "the Uncharted series sucks" is beyond me.

Is he planning to retire from the gaming industry? At the age of 37? It would be a shame to see a talented game designer leave the industry, but whatever his plans are, best of luck to him.
