Of course, but Epic is first and foremost a middleware engine developer. Its what keeps them on the map. His role at Epic is a big one, but calling him the backbone of the company is a bit much.
GD1551
Dude, he's more than a designer on top of it, he's pretty much the face of the company as well..
I guess. All I know is that when I'm working away in UDK, I feel grateful for the programmers that built such a (relatively) easy to use game engine. It makes life easy for the artist and a guy like me can even dabble in high level scripting via Kismet.
The engine itself has had a huge impact on the industry and the guys behind that engine are the ones I credit.
I guess from the perspective of a gamer, Cliffy may seem like the backbone or face of Epic, but to me and many others working in the industry hes just a very talented designer that happens to work there.
Uh, how does the creator of the Unreal Tournament series leaving Epic suddenly translate to us getting a new Unreal Tournament game?Good, maybe now we can get a proper se uel to Unreal Tournament instead of that consolized garbage called Gears of War.
DrTrafalgarLaw
Also, there's nothing "consolized" about Gears of War... Third-person shooters have always been a mostly console-based genre to begin with.
He is a very talented designer and I will pray that he get's the best in life, hope he comes back to gaming in the future. I do not understand why some people hate him, he seems like a calm and cool guy based off the interviews I have seen of him, not the self concieted ego maniac like some people say.
That being said, I did find it a bit immature when got mad at reviewers that were giving Gears 3 an 8. That was not very professional of him.

He was making **** remarks on how there was no audience for UT anymore and how much more money that PoS GeoW brought him. Basically saying a big FU to all the fans that made them so big as they are now today. When he did got around to making UT3, he half-assed it and made it look like that garbage called GeoW. And now he is blaming on the fans that supposedly did not buy it in droves like the brainless, unwashed 360 masses do with GeoW. Cliffy B seems like he chased that illusionary pot of gold on the consoles behind the back of their original fans, now even his smaller fanbase even thinning out more with each installment, he decides to call it uits. He made his sweet money by selling out to microsoft and the actual people that put effort into creating games like they do now...do not get any recognition. Too bad, another PC dev down the drain.[QUOTE="GD1551"][QUOTE="sandbox3d"]

face =/= backbone Hes probably had his hand in the engine development, actually it is very likely.Damn, I'll miss all of the unnecessary hate he got everry time he said something. It was pretty hilarious. He spoke his mind and I liked that aboiut him, even if I didn't agree with everything he said.He seemed to really enjoy making games.
I'm sure he got tired of seeing all of those ducats in his bank account adding up and wanted some time to spend some of them while he is still young enough to enjoy it.. He'll be back.
Damn. I always loved Cliffy. He had.. as much as I hate to say it, Swag.
Good luck Cliffy, you'll be missed. At least by me.
what's with people thinking he's retiring for good?BrunoBRSBecause his statement makes it seem like this is the case.
[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]what's with people thinking he's retiring for good?sammyjenkis898Because his statement makes it seem like this is the case. a break isn't a retirement. he wants to move on from epic games, but first he'll take an extended vacation. that's what i got from it.
and he made this funny homage to warren spector with mega64.[QUOTE="psymon100"]
Interesting. Well, I hope he does stay in the business.
He is quite a funny character, quoted as saying such unprofessional things as:
"Mark my words, those particles are going to be whored by developers," enthused Bleszinski.
He was also famous for having a point of difference withsome reviewers, as they gave gears 3 a lower score than gears 2, and CliffyB was adament that GeOW 3 was simply better in every measurable way.
Certainly a colourful character.

it's for things like that, that I'll never understand why so many people hate him, he's awesome imo
[QUOTE="Wiimotefan"][QUOTE="GD1551"]
How is that discrediting their staff? Can you name another designer in epic with his talent?
BrunoBRS
What has he done outside of Gears? (serious question, I really dont know)
pretty sure he's involved with the unreal games too. anyway, he seems like a really nice guy, best of luck to him.He designed this game as well.
I wish Epic would make a new Jazz The Jack Rabbit, and even moreso, a new One Must Fall. 2097 was an awesome game!

It's amusingly pathetic how much hate this guy gets no matter what he says or does. I guess the way he carries himself turns people off, but it's better than being an anonymous dick on the internet.
Hope he enjoys his break. I'm sure he won't have any trouble finding work when he chooses to return.
Fvck all of you who are finding this good news. He's one of the key people in the history of gaming. He spoke what he thought. He was an expert and yet a gamer just like us as well. He never sold himself out despite the increasing success of his games. Great guy, and I'll miss him until he returns (hold the if)

ah, my bad.when it comes to Unreal Tournament, the way I see it: he made a bad game, nothing to be pissed about, everyone makes mistakes
he really hasn't done much besides gear and a couple of titles for me to care. Good luck to whatever he does though
sad to see him go
gears of war was a great series
also to top it all off all of his quotes were epic as well
probably what i'll miss most is his system war sturring quotes he gave us
"I came in with Nintendo Power in 1988. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Nintendo Power. The Almighty has said, no doubt: 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together."
Gaffer
I can't see Cliffy B doing anything else but Epic Games.
Like he said he grew up making Video Games. I don't think he'll be good at anything else.
Sad that he left, but I can't help but think that he'll be back.
not sure what you mean by that.[Quote="Gaffer"]
