Epic got a taste of market supremacy with Gears of War, it was only natural that they expected thier main franchise to do even better .............. but they were wrong, not only did it cripple its advantage in the PC community, the PS3 community isnt exactly the palce to make sales, and well ... by the time the 360 version is released ... im sure CoD4 / Halo 3 has already set in for most FPS gamers.Meu2k7
Um sorry. I doubt Epic expected it to sell ~4 million copies on both the PS3 and PC combined.

[QUOTE="AdrianWerner"]I honestly don't know what happened here. Forza_2

Or did you mean "I honestly don't know what excuse to use here." ?

Maybe piracy hurts developers more than you think. Did you ever consider that for one second ?

Well...considering that 10 other games of the same type released each year are doing just fine I don't think piracy is a problem here. Of course piracy is always a problem, but piracy has always existed. You act like the only reason a game can flop in sales is piracy. Sometimes peeople just don't like a certain game.

they should have known consolizing their game will make it flop on PC, considering every other consolized game suffered the same fate. I guess they expected that whining about piracy will somehow make pc community overlook how UT3 really is.

Well...then I guess it's a russian rulete, ten games don't get pirated so badly and than BAM...one get bad luck and dies. So I guess devs should rather invest in ritual sacrifices too avoid bad karma instead of investing in anti-piracy measures, they would be more successful this way.

Of course nevermind that the other game by the same developer is the most profitable series SEGA Europe ever had, on any platform

It's much slower. Running speed has been reduced , the same with jump heigh. Add to this the fact that the game itself is underwhelming (lack od maps and modes compared to UT04) and this game has been released shortly after QuakeWars, TF2 and CoD4. So not only UT fans didn't bother with it , but non-fans were also occupied with other games. it didn't even have the "OMG! the graphics" effect because of Crysis. So It's not really surprising it sold badly.

And there are not many people who play it even on cracked servers, so it's not like it would sell well without piracy. When a highly anticiuated MP-centric game sells worse than new Nancy Drew budget adventure game then it's obvious piracy isn't the main problem it had.

The pirates and hackers are going to destroy PC gaming. Blame them Hermits for all your games coming to the Consoles. Far Cry 2 is going to make a lot more money on consoles then it's ever is on the PC.

You do know UTk4 was pretty much an expansion to UTk3, right ?

I think it's the opposite. Running is faster than before. (Here, here, and here)

Also, several people from the UT2k4 community didn't like the floaty feel of UT2k4. So, as you can see, not everyone sees going back to UT99 more, as a negative like you do.

Edit: Almost forgot. UT3 is actually slower on consoles as well.

On the PS3 it isn't. Blu-Ray burners cost too much for the average hacker to buy one. MS has crack down on the hackers so it's harder to play on XBL without getting your console banned for life.

Another good thing about consoles is this. PS3 has made it difficult for people to crack in terms of playing pirated games. Couple this in the fact that the blue-ray discs are 20 dollars a peice, the burner is expensive and MOST IMPORTANTLY, people are not fans of downloading 20-25 gb for a single game and you have a way to curb piracy. Even when it's cracked and prices go down, the games will still be annoyingly large to download for the average broadband user and prices won't go down THAT fast for burners/blue-ray. Thus, the way to curb piracy isn't necessarily something technological in itself but rather inconveniencing so there is less piracy.

Read my post. If PS3 gets a huge fanbase and becomes a success, the software sales will be great as most pirates will resort to actually buying the game. In terms of 360, it still isn't as simple as the DC but it's difficult enough for casuals to scratch their head over what to do. But in reality, it's simple.

Yeah but playing on XBL is difficult if you have a modded 360. Since the 360 doesn't have a standard HDD you can copy the game to the HDD meaning you have to burn a DVD. The consoles have piracy issues too but nowhere closeto PC gaming.

Uh do you think all consolites in Asia care about online gaming ? And they can buy games from the streets for about $1 instead of downloading games. And they probably dont have fast internet or maybe no internet at all. So basically 1 torrent can lead to thousands of pirated copies being sold. There is absolutely no way to track this.

Its easier to buy a game off the street for $1 than to wait for weeks to download a game via dial-up. Heck last gen M$ actually had service centers for modded consoles in my country (to improve hardware sales obviously)

People have started buying original games because Xbox live finally came a few months back but console piracy is still very very big. PC gaming is winning easily over here because of the awesome dedicated servers in hong kong and singapore (ping for me is 60)

Well if you download a PC game illegally, for example CoD4 you can't do any multiplayer which I think is half of the game, or even more considering how long single player lasts, but it's still sad that PC game developers are hesitant of making exclusive PC games now a days. One way which would make it harder would be making there games Steam only which although still cracked it requires a bit more work than just downloading a file. But then the issue is raised where not everyone can/does purchase products with a credit card.

But they arent.

Its just the same as it was 3 years ago.

The PC exclusives lists still dwarfs every console, by such a huge amount

-

on a another note, pre-owned console games are just as worse - actually i'd say worse - than pc piracy - as they are sold at all game retail stores, and are heavily promoted.

Isn't it obvious? Piracy - which has existed for years on PC, consoles, and handhelds - is now a convienent excuse that allows them to avoid saying the real reason games like UT3 sold poorly. The reality is that PC gamers are upset at UT3, moving to consoles changes the gameplay, which upset some longtime Unreal fans. Over on the console side, most console gamers were uninterested in the titles, where it plays out on consoles which already have many FPS titles (much like the PC).

But when you make a game that doesn't satisfy your core audience, and you're the CEO of a company, do you ever give the honest answer? Of course not - instead, much like Kane & Lynch, everything (and everyone) is to blame except their own damn game

Who in their right mind pays full price for what is basically a multiplayer game? The 6 hour long, repetitive and generic SP isn't worth a damn, can't really blame people pirating it when there are better MP games on the market. Maybe developers should come up with something new instead of pumping out the same crap over and over again.

I won't disagree that the campaign is crap, but how does that make pirating it right? If I think the cost of a car is a rip-off, does that give me the right to go and steal it instead? For that matter, if the SP isn't worth a damn, and there are better MP games on the market, why are they wasting time pirating it?

Pirates have to play on cracked servers, which cannot be seen by activision, so all the servers that activions sees, are proper servers

+ witches proofs that PC gaming is going no where

I dont mean in Bioshocks sense.

I mean in Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts sense

THere are always workarounds, but these workarounds simply miss out on the content - ala online games.

And no steam hasent been cracked, HL2, and the episodes were - to limited effect.

But.

Games like Galactic Cilivilisations had no copy protection and were a commercial sucesses. Hell even CoH1 didnt have disk protection, and was a commercial sucess

Anyway Pre Owned games can be considered worse than piracy anyway

CoH:OF is hacked easily ( althrough I own it legally, can provide proof), but protection isnt going to make a game a succes, CoH1 whas a succes becouse it was a good game

Indeed it can be hacked - anyone can find that out by easy means - and yea I own a legit version aswell - to play online however I strongly doubt there is a workaround.

But yes copy protection doesent mean the game will be a commercial sucess, you are right - good games sell well, and that the way its always gone down with PC titles - any great title for that matter

Steam Games can be cracked also, for example you can play team fortress 2 on pirated servers that do not require a legal copy of the game so stop selling this steam crap. I saw the whole Orange Box on torrents that didn't required steam or cd-key so except TF2 (as i said earlyer) all games could be played with no effort. UT3 is a crappy consolized game with unjustified price and bad timing for release. Another crap... ET:QW same story. Both are Multiplayer oriented games so users will be authentificated. No piracy crap here, just bad games.. That stupid hockey game.. Just to ask.. how many of you would even consider buying such game? Oh nobody? Of course is was a disaster, lame game. It sold 100k and it pirated 80k and nobody played it how surprising. But to get to the point, it makes me sick when i see so much crap in these posts, for example: "oh it's so bad they're pirating games, how can someone do this, it's stealing and crap" or "you are ruining the industry". Let me tell you something: for all you ppl out there that have or ever had a non-licensed music file, or movie or whatever, or maybe half of your music is copied illegally and think this is not stealing, well guess what?, IT IS. Somebody said something like: "I own lots of pirated mp3s but i think it's not like stealing a game and bla bla". Well you have you have 30 mp3s worth 30 euros or dollars and you get the price of a game. SO IT'S THE SAME THING WAKE UP!!! Bad Games don't sale because they are bad not because of piracy. I don't say it's a good thing but it's not a bad thing either. Bad retail or poor stock can make huge difficulties in getting a game. If pirated you can get it before official launch. And for god sake: IF YOU LIKE THE GAME, BUY IT!!! Or maybe you computer just isn't cappable of playing that game and you just spent 50 euros on a game you just can't play right, what then? Or maybe you live in a country where the average salary is 200 euros. What then? But if don't and you like the game, BUT IT!!! Good games will always sell!! Ppl will apreciate it and buy it even if they already have the pirated version. Not all of them of course but it's a question of common sense. If you liked it played it had they money for it but haven't bought it you're just lame! For the PC-Console piracy crap. I just saw Assassin's Creed and COD4 for xbox torrents with 15k and 12k peers. Piracy is everywhere! Starting from the lamest video on your PC to your lamest song on your iPOD or some software on your mobile. As well for consoles! Just that people like to talk crap before even starting a simple search on google. And BTW COD4 was no 1 in the uk charts and sold very well with 5 mil copies just on xbox even if it was all over the torrents. Case closed!!

The difference between PC piracy and console piracy is that every single PC gamer knows how to pirate a game, whether they do it or not is their moral decision (I don't). For console gamers only a tiny, tiny, small percentage of console gamers would even know that games CAN be pirated, so obviosly as a ratio of sales to pirating, PC will always get the worse end because most people don't have the morals to consider the game companies.
